Peripheral nervous system involvement in patients with Behçet disease.

BACKGROUND: Central nervous system involvement in Behçet disease (BD) has been well documented, but studies evaluating peripheral nervous system involvement are relatively uncommon. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to evaluate the frequency and characteristics of peripheral nervous system involvement in BD. METHODS: Sixty-nine BD patients (36 women, 33 men) followed by neurology and dermatology outpatient clinics between October 1999 and October 2004 were enrolled into study. A careful history was taken and physical and neurologic examinations were done. All other medical causes that may

Impairment of the peripheral nervous system in Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease.

BACKGROUND: The clinical manifestations of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) primarily reflect involvement of the central nervous system. The coexistence of CJD with peripheral nervous system involvement has also been reported. OBJECTIVE: To analyze peripheral neuron electrophysiologic changes and to compare these data with neuropathologic features of spinal motor neurons in patients with definite CJD. DESIGN AND PATIENTS: Electrophysiologic examinations were performed on 16 patients with sporadic CJD. The diagnosis was confirmed by neuropathologic examinations (15 patients) or by intravital d

The diagnostic value of somatosensory evoked potentials in the diseases of peripheral nervous system.

The mean latency value of somatosensory evoked potentials (SEP) recorded at the Erb's point, spinal and cortical level, was assessed in 20 normal subjects by percutaneous stimulation of the peripheral nerves (median, ulnar, superficial radial, tibial and peroneal). At the Erb's point and spinal cervical level, we distinguished the classically described potentials (N9, N13, N14) and the cortical "far-field" potentials such as: P17, N20, P24, N35 and sometimes P45. The central conduction time was calculated by determination of the interpeak latency N9-N13 and N13-N20 (for the upper limb) and LP-

[Diseases of the lumbosacral division of the peripheral nervous system in children and adolescents].

The clinical picture and course of diseases affecting the lumbosacral division of the peripheral nervous system in 111 children and adolescents aged 8 to 18 years are described. It was found that in 40.5% of the patients the diseases developed in the presence of congenital anomalies in the development of the lumbosacral part of the vertebral column. Unlike adults, the pain syndrome in children and adolescents is less pronounced, and leading in the clinical picture are signs of reflectory-tonic protection of the vertebral column.

[Diseases of the peripheral and visual nervous system during infection with human immunodeficiency virus].

INTRODUCTION: Infection with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is often accompanied by neurological complications. One of these includes disorders affecting the peripheral and visual nervous system, especially during the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS) stage. DEVELOPMENT: The peripheral neuropathies associated with infection by HIV are an assorted group of disorders, which include acute or chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy, multiple mononeuropathy and neuropathies related to the herpes zoster virus or cytomegalovirus. The most common and clinically important of the

[Cerebrospinal fluid cAMP and cGMP in various peripheral and central nervous system diseases. Preliminary report].

In a group of 51 patients the concentrations of cAMP and cGMP and their ratio were determined in the cerebrospinal fluid in certain neurological diseases. Statistically significant differences were found in the values of the concentrations of the above metabolites in selected groups of neurological diseases. Generally speaking, apart from a group of multiple sclerosis cases the values of cAMP concentration were higher in central nervous system diseases than in peripheral nervous system diseases. The highest values of the cAMP/cGMP ratio were observed in the group of patients with inflammatory …

[Involvement of the peripheral nervous system in systemic connective tissue diseases: report on clinical cases].

INTRODUCTION: The peripheral nervous system is usually involved in the majority of systemic connective tissue diseases, particularly in systemic lupus erythematosus, Sjögren's syndrome, vasculitis and systemic sclerosis. The pathogenesis of lesions in the peripheral nervous system associated with the autoimmune process is complex and it appears that two mechanisms, immunological and ischemic, are of greatest importance. Structures of the nervous system may be damaged by several autoantibodies (e.g. antineuronal, anti-nerve growth factor, anti-neurotrophins), by cytotoxic effects ofproinflammat

Peripheral nervous system lesion syndromes and the mechanisms of their formation in connective tissue diseases.

Systemic rheumatological diseases are often accompanied by the development of central and peripheral nervous system pathology. Data providing evidence of the high incidence of peripheral nervous system lesions in systemic lupus erythematosus and systemic scleroderma are presented. These diseases in particular are characterized by polyneuropathies and tunnel syndromes. Our own observations, along with published data, revealed the following major pathogenetic mechanisms of peripheral nervous system lesions in diffuse connective tissue diseases - ischemic, immunological, and metabolic. Considerat

Neutrophil biology in injuries and diseases of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

The role of inflammation in nervous system injury and disease is attracting increased attention. Much of that research has focused on microglia in the central nervous system (CNS) and macrophages in the peripheral nervous system (PNS). Much less attention has been paid to the roles played by neutrophils. Neutrophils are part of the granulocyte subtype of myeloid cells. These cells, like macrophages, originate and differentiate in the bone marrow from which they enter the circulation. After tissue damage or infection, neutrophils are the first immune cells to infiltrate into tissues and are dir

Immune-mediated diseases involving central and peripheral nervous systems.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: In addition to combined central and peripheral demyelination, other immune diseases could involve both the central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS). METHODS: To identify immune-mediated diseases responsible for symptomatic combined central/peripheral nervous system involvement (ICCPs), we conducted a multicentric retrospective study and assessed clinical, electrophysiological, and radiological features of patients fulfilling our ICCP criteria. RESULTS: Thirty patients (20 males) were included and followed during a median of 79.5 months (interqu

Peripheral nervous system involvement in Parkinson's disease: evidence and controversies.

BACKGROUND: In recent years, non-motor features of Parkinson's disease (PD) have received increasing attention and PD is currently considered a systemic rather than a pure basal ganglia disorder. Among the systemic features, peripheral neuropathy (PN) is a recent acquisition since the first case-control study reporting increased frequency of PN in PD dates back to 2008. METHODS: We reviewed available literature on peripheral nervous system (PNS) involvement in PD. RESULTS: Evidence of α-synuclein deposition in the PNS and small nerve fiber deterioration in both drug-naïve and treated PD pati

[Demyelinating disease affecting both central and peripheral nervous system].

INTRODUCTION: Demyelinating disease affecting both the central and the peripheral nervous systems has rarely been reported. CASE REPORT: A 30-year-old man, presented with ataxia and diffuse areflexia due to polyneuropathy fullfilling demyelination criteria. His medical history was notable for central nervous system demyelination compatible with multiple sclerosis. He improved transiently with intravenous immunoglobulin and then stabilized with methotrexate. CONCLUSION: This case report distinguishes a new kind of inflammatory disease affecting both central and peripheral nervous system. It s

[Multifocal motor neuropathy: an individualized disease of the peripheral nervous system].

Multifocal motor neuropathy is a peripheral nervous system disease described among chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies. It is characterized according to both clinical criteria, including chronic asymmetric and multifocal deficit which starts and remains prominent in the upper limbs, and electrophysiological criteria, including persistent multifocal motor conduction blocks in motor nerves. High titers of serum antiganglioside GM1 antibodies are discovered in nearly 40% of cases. Steroids and plasma exchange are not efficient. High doses of intravenous immunoglobulins (i.v.Ig) im

Peripheral nervous system damage in experimental chronic Chagas' disease.

Electromyographic and histopathologic studies were performed in Rockland mice chronically infected with CA-I Trypanosoma cruzi strain. At 4 months post-infection the emg failed to show spontaneous activity, but a diminished interference pattern was detected in half of the infected group, while mean motor unit potential amplitude and duration were increased, compared with controls. An active denervation was observed at 6 months which persisted up to 9 months, when motor unit potential showed a significantly lower mean activity and duration. At 12 months most of the infected mice developed a red

Peripheral nervous system manifestations of MOG antibody associated disease.

Recent studies have reported the involvement of peripheral nervous system (PNS) in association with MOG-IgG, including isolated neuropathies. In this retrospective study we characterized the PNS involvement in MOG antibody associated disease (MOGAD). Six out of 215 MOGAD patients had PNS involvement (all polyradiculopathy) that occurred concurrently with a CNS demyelinating episode. We also demonstrated MOG expression in healthy human controls' proximal nerve root. Nine patients with true-positive MOG-IgG1 had PNS involvement temporally unrelated to a CNS demyelinating event. All these patient

Peripherin is a biomarker of axonal damage in peripheral nervous system disease.

Valid, responsive blood biomarkers specific to peripheral nerve damage would improve management of peripheral nervous system (PNS) diseases. Neurofilament light chain (NfL) is sensitive for detecting axonal pathology but is not specific to PNS damage, as it is expressed throughout the PNS and CNS. Peripherin, another intermediate filament protein, is almost exclusively expressed in peripheral nerve axons. We postulated that peripherin would be a promising blood biomarker of PNS axonal damage. We demonstrated that peripherin is distributed in sciatic nerve, and to a lesser extent spinal cord ti
