Assessment and emergency management of suicidality in personality disorders.

This article examines the association between suicidal behavior and personality disorders. It updates the review of epidemiological evidence for the association between suicidal behavior and suicide in individuals who have a personality disorder diagnosis, particularly in borderline personality disorder (BPD). The second part of the article presents new empirical evidence that characterizes suicidal behavior in patients who have BPD, specifically examining patient characteristics that differentiate patients who have BPD with a history of high versus low lethality suicide attempts. Finally, the

Construction of item-level scales from the Personality Assessment Inventory to assess levels of personality functioning.

The fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual for Mental Disorders (DSM-5; American Psychiatric Association, 2013) introduced the clinician-rated Levels of Personality Functioning Scale (LPFS) as an indicator of general personality functioning based on four elements: Identity, Self-Direction, Empathy, and Intimacy. Construct validation strategies were employed to select and evaluate items from the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 2007) to measure the four elements of the LPFS. In Study 1, conceptual ratings of PAI items produced lists of candidate items for the four e…

Enhancing Diabetes Management Through Personality Assessment: A Pilot Study.

The aims of this study were to evaluate the utility of therapeutic assessment (therapeutic assessment) as a brief intervention to target reduction in A1C levels and to assess the levels of personality functioning and broad trait domains described in the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders in a sample of patients with Type 2 diabetes and their relationship to A1C levels at baseline and follow-up. Participants (n = 99) were recruited from a primary care office and provided feedback on how their personality functioning and pathological personality traits might influence their diabet

Using the Personality Assessment Inventory-Adolescent in Legal Settings.

The Personality Assessment Inventory-Adolescent (PAI-A; Morey et al., 2007) is a self-report measure of personality and psychopathology appropriate for use with individuals aged 12-18. It is modeled after the Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI; Morey, 1991), a measure widely used with adults in clinical and legal settings. The PAI-A assesses a variety of features that have utility in legal settings, including validity scales that assess approach to testing, clinical scales measuring common types of psychopathology, and treatment consideration scales that provide indicators of treatment moti…

Assessment of Personality Disorders in Older Adults. A Practice Guide.

Assessment of personality disorders (PDs) in older adults is a nuanced trade of its own. The aim of this practice guide is to illustrate gerontological assessment challenges using 3 case vignettes. We argue that it is important to pay extra attention to the influence of cognitive and medical (somatic) disorders on personality functioning in older adults during personality assessment. We also note that information provided by informants contributes added value to personality assessment. Personality assessment should be sufficiently age-specific to prevent overdiagnosis or underdiagnosis in olde…

Insecure attachment and personality pathology: Concurrent assessment and longitudinal modeling.

Insecure attachment and personality pathology are parallel frameworks for representing interpersonal dysfunction. Although research to date has revealed strong bivariate associations between these constructs, the current state of the science is nonspecific and leaves piecemeal guidance for clinical and empirical efforts. The goal of the present study was to determine the magnitude of the associations between attachment and personality pathology across two conceptualizations of maladaptivity and across three waves of time, thereby satisfying repeated calls for empirical innovation in this area.

Self-other disagreement in personality assessment: significance and prognostic value.

The feasibility of the use of multiple informant reports in clinical practice was examined in a sample of 105 psychiatric outpatients who provided self-ratings and (2-3) informants' reports on the Five Factor Personality Inventory. The response rate was 97%. The patients assessed themselves as less extraverted and more emotionally stable than their proxies did. In addition, the significance of self-other disagreement was investigated. Our first hypothesis, stating that self-other disagreement would correlate with (personality) pathology, was confirmed: self-other disagreement predominantly occ

MMPI assessment of the DSM-III-R histrionic personality disorder.

This study investigated the MMPI characteristics of a group of 25 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (3rd ed., rev. [DSM-III-R]; American Psychiatric Association, 1987) histrionic personality disorder patients, contrasted with a mixed group of 57 other personality disorder patients. All patients were diagnosed by means of a semistructured interview (SCID-II; Spitzer, Williams, & Gibbon, 1987). Effects for diagnostic category were found for MMPI Scales 9 (Ma), 0 (Si) and for the HST scale, developed by Morey, Waugh, and Blashfield (1985) for the diagnosis of the histrionic pe

Utility of the bright and dark personality inventory in assessing personality pathology.

BACKGROUND: Contemporary approaches to personality pathology increasingly emphasize dimensional models, a shift reflected in recent diagnostic frameworks such as the DSM-5 Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) and the ICD-11. Aligned with this perspective, the Bright and Dark Personality Inventory (BDPI), grounded in the five-factor model, was developed to dimensionally assess both general ("General 5") and maladaptive ("Dark 5") personality domains. This study focused on maladaptive personality traits and examined the incremental utility of the BDPI's Dark 5 in identifying person

Personality assessment with Temperament and Character Inventory in Parkinson's disease.

INTRODUCTION: There is a growing interest in personality evaluation in Parkinson's disease (PD), following observations of specific temperaments in PD patients. Therefore, our objective was to evaluate personality dimensions from the Temperament and Character Inventory (TCI) in a cohort of fluctuating PD patients considered for deep brain stimulation. METHODS: Fluctuating PD patients from the PREDISTIM cohort were included. Description of TCI dimensions and comparison with a French normative cohort were performed. Pearson correlations between TCI dimensions and motor, behavioral and cognitive

Client and Clinical Utility of the Assessment of Personality Disorders.

Clinical utility and client utility are important desirable properties when developing and evaluating a new classification system for mental disorders. This study reports on four focus groups followed up by a Delphi study among clinicians working with clients with personality disorders (PD) and clients with PD themselves to harness both user groups' perspectives on the utility of PD diagnosis. Our findings show that the client and clinician views of the concept of utility were closely aligned and include aspects of transparency of communication and the ability of an assessment to enhance hope,

Psychophysiological ambulatory assessment of affective dysregulation in borderline personality disorder.

Many experts now believe that pervasive problems in affect regulation constitute the central area of dysfunction in borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, data is sparse and inconclusive. We hypothesized that patients with BPD, in contrast to healthy gender and nationality-matched controls, show a higher frequency and intensity of self-reported emotions, altered physiological indices of emotions, more complex emotions and greater problems in identifying specific emotions. We took a 24-hour psychophysiological ambulatory monitoring approach to investigate affect regulation during every

Dataset yielded by an assessment of personality disorders among young French adults using the Inventory of Personality Organization.

Data on personality disorders in young French adults were collected using the validated French version of the Inventory of Personality Organization (IPO-fr). Respondents also completed the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-4th Edition (PDQ-4+). The sample comprised 607 students aged 18-26 years enrolled on a variety of courses at Angers University (France). Of these, 170 had a personality disorder according to the PDQ-4+, and their data were used to define IPO cut-off scores for Cluster A, B or C personality disorders. The data are stored in a comma-separated value format that can be easily

Applying Personality Assessment Inventory Borderline Scales and Alternative Model for Personality Disorder Borderline Facets in Two Clinical Samples.

The Alternative Model for Personality Disorders (AMPD) in the fifth edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) assesses personality pathology as a combination of impairment (Criterion A) and problematic personality traits (Criterion B). The current study explores the ability of the traditional Personality Assessment Inventory (PAI) Borderline scales combined with new PAI-derived AMPD borderline personality disorder (BPD) facets in predicting DSM BPD criteria. The DSM BPD criteria were identified by the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-IV Axis II Disorders (…
