Comparison between air pollution concentrations measured at the nearest monitoring station to the delivery hospital and those measured at stations nearest the residential postal code regions of pregnant women in Fukuoka.

BACKGROUND: Numerous earlier studies examining the association of air pollution with maternal and foetal health estimated maternal exposure to air pollutants based on the women's residential addresses. However, residential addresses, which are personally identifiable information, are not always obtainable. Since a majority of pregnant women reside near their delivery hospitals, the concentrations of air pollutants at the respective delivery hospitals may be surrogate markers of pollutant exposure at home. We compared air pollutant concentrations measured at the nearest monitoring station to Ky…

Recommendations for the clinical use of the Apperceptive Personality Test.

The Apperceptive Personality Test (APT) is a new technique that combines the traditional story-telling method with a questionnaire about the characters in the story, to be filled out by the person being tested. The resulting information is tabulated, and a variety of scores are generated which yield information about the person's personality. The identified clinical signposts indicated by such scores are summarized in this article, along with two illustrative protocol fragments showing how to usual interpretive method is supplemented by the information from the questionnaire.

Clinical vs. exclusively online sperm donors: what's the difference?

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: As the growth of the internet and commercial connection websites increasingly facilitates sperm donation outside of clinical (formal) settings, studies looking into informal (online) donor psychology and behaviour are both extremely warranted and currently under-researched. This study's aim was to identify key differences between informal donor males with a history of clinical donation, and those who exclusively participate in the informal market. METHODS: The study utilises (N = 112) current informal sperm donors' demographics and personality traits taken from register

Childhood abuse, alexithymia and personality disorder.

I examined the relationships among childhood abuse, alexithymia, and personality disorder. Participants were 60 adults who were receiving outpatient psychotherapy. Both the participants and their therapists used the Toronto Alexithymia Scale to provide independently information concerning the client's level of alexithymia. The therapists provided information concerning DSM-III-R personality disorder diagnoses, and participants completed portions of the Personality Diagnostic Questionnaire-Revised. Information concerning childhood abuse history was obtained from the therapists. As expected, chi

The use of stereotypes and individuating information in political person perception.

This article introduces the political person perception model, which identifies conditions under which perceivers rely on stereotypes (party membership), individuating information (issue position), or both in political person perception. Three studies supported the model's predictions. Study 1 showed that perceivers gave primacy to target information that was narrowly relevant to a judgment, whether that information was stereotypic or individuating. Study 2 found that perceivers relied exclusively on individuating information when it was narrowly relevant to the judgment and relied on both ste

The health effects of diethylstilbestrol revisited.

Although diethylstilbestrol has not been prescribed commonly for more than 25 years, its effects on the health of exposed persons are still important. In this article, we summarize current information about the major health effects of diethylstilbestrol exposure and delineate implications for nurses. Nurses can help to identify persons at risk from prior diethylstilbestrol exposure, facilitate comprehensive assessments of persons exposed to diethylstilbestrol, and share current information about diethylstilbestrol.

An update on risk assessment for familial and hereditary colorectal cancer.

Family history risk assessment can identify individuals at increased risk of colorectal cancer (CRC) who would benefit from earlier or more frequent CRC screening. Clinicians should evaluate the patient's family history as well as personal history to identify red flags and patterns that may suggest predisposition to CRC and then use that information to stratify risk into average, increased, and high risk categories to inform genetic counseling recommendations and personalized management.
