BACKGROUND: Despite being a cholera-endemic country, data on cholera in the Philippines remain sparse. Knowing the areas where cholera is known to occur and the factors that lead to its occurrence will assist in planning preventive measures and disaster mitigation.
METHODS: Using sentinel surveillance data, PubMed and ProMED searches covering information from 2008-2013 and event-based surveillance reports from 2010-2013, we assessed the epidemiology of cholera in the Philippines. Using spatial log regression, we assessed the role of water, sanitation and population density on the incidence of…

The warm tropical climate of the Philippines and its interaction with cultural practices, occupation and immune responsiveness contribute to the increased susceptibility of Filipinos to fungal infections. An investigation to determine the prevalence of fungal infections in dermatology training institutions over a 4-year period was conducted. The results showed that fungal infections rank as the second leading cause of consultation with a prevalence of 12.98%. Pityriasis versicolor (25.34%), tinea corporis (22.63%), tinea cruris (16.7%) and tinea pedis (16.38%) were the most frequently encounte…

There is an unusually high frequency of torsion dystonia in Panay. Of the 28 Filipino cases, 23 (82%) are from the island of Panay and 19 of the 23 (82%) are from the province of Capiz. The 28 cases belong to 25 families Six sets of brothers are noted. All are males. Pedigree analysis reveals six families with several members affected. Two families show features suggesting possible sex-linked recessive transmission, a mode of inheritance previously undescribed in the literature. The clinical features of the cases seen in this series differ from previously described cases in the literature in s

Vaccination and the enforcement of stipulations of personal hygiene can be viewed as different mechanisms of colonial government. Immunization campaigns reach and register populations, but they may also appear to obviate the need for behavioral reform. Hygiene education implies the development of a disciplined, self-governing citizenry, although in the colonial setting validation of such attainment is usually deferred. This article explores the tension between mechanisms of security (immunization) and drill (hygiene) in the Philippines, under the United States' colonial regime, in the early tw…

Long-term residents of the Philippines were skin tested with histoplasmin skin test material. This study was conducted with 143 electric company (MERALCO) employees from Manila, Philippines. We found that 37 (26%) of the subjects were skin test positive. Characteristics of the positive group were: average age of 37 years; all except one were lifelong inhabitants of Metro Manila; 25 were male and 12 were female; one-half of the subjects reported extended contact with chickens. Despite these findings, histoplasmosis is considered to be a very rare disease in the Philippines. This survey indicate…

AIM: To provide information on the current status of West syndrome (WS) in the Philippines.
METHODS: This is a retrospective review of WS cases from January 1997 to December 1999 from two largest referral government institutions. A questionnaire interview survey on anticonvulsant usage was also conducted among practicing child neurologists.
RESULTS: Twelve patients diagnosed to have infantile spasms at 2-15 months were included, with a male:female ratio of 1:1. The proportion of WS cases among epileptic children under age 3 was 3.18%. The etiologies were idiopathic/cryptogenic in four (33%) …

Problems with filariasis control in this country of more than seven thousand islands are presented and discussed according to the political, economic, and socio-behavioral aspects. Discussed are issues relating not only to the recipients of the health services and control programs but also to the people in the control program and disease control managers. Marinduque, a recently described endemic focus of lymphatic filariasis, is used to illustrate the many problems affecting the control efforts in the Philippines. The true impact of the problem has not been described lately, hence the need for…

Paragonimiasis in the Philippines was first reported in 1907. The first attempt to study its life cycle was made in 1941 when metacercariae of Paragonimus were found in fresh-water mountain crabs. At present the causative agent of human paragonimiasis in this country is Paragonimus westermani, although the new name, Paragonimus philippinensis, has been proposed instead. The second species of Paragonimus, Paragonimus siamensis, was reported in cats in 1973. The prevalence of disease in two endemic areas ranges from 0.5 to 12%. Transmission to man is attributed to the preparation of local delica…

An analysis is presented of the histopathologic, clinical and prognostic features of malignant lymphomas (MLs) treated at the University of the Philippines-Philippine General Hospital Medical Center, Manila, between 1975 and 1981. There were 434 malignant lymphomas, constituting 3.86% of all cancers studied at this institute during this period. Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas accounted for 82%. Among these, nodular lymphomas constituted 8% of the group and diffuse lymphomas 92%. In diffuse lymphomas, poorly differentiated lymphocytic lymphomas (31%) and histiocytic lymphomas (30%) were predominant. Pl…

The international consensus to end compulsory drug treatments and close forced rehabilitation facilities needs urgent transformation to country policies. In the Philippines, as with other countries in Asia, rehabilitation can be compulsory and is seen as the humane alternative to the "war on drugs." In this paper, we present the landscape of rehabilitation and narrate the ways in which people who use drugs are forced to undergo treatment. We unpack the politics behind rehabilitation and explain the sociocultural foundations that support compulsory treatment. We argue that a transition to a hum…
