Monolayer ZrBr combines excellent electronic and phononic transport, forming a compact platform for coupled topology. First-principles and Wannier-Green's-function calculations show symmetry-protected near-linear crossings along K-Γ-M-K without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). With SOC, a direct gap of ∼45.6 meV opens at Γ with a pronounced reorganization of Zr-4d orbital weights. The Wilson-loop evolution yields Z2 = 1, and semi-infinite boundary spectra exhibit a gap-traversing helical edge channel, consistent with the constant-energy contour and in-plane spin winding. Phonon dispersions contain n

Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have generated considerable interest in optoelectronics and valence-band electronics due to their unique electronic structures. In this paper, we incorporate the spin-orbit coupling effects and use the left-handed circularly polarized excitation of K-valley electrons as an example to investigate the excited-state dynamics of the coupling between the optical field and phonons in WSe2. We reveal that left-handed light selectively excites K-valley electrons, while right-handed light selectively excites K'-valley electrons, inducing periodic Rabi o…

We here explore how some frequently overlooked computational parameters affect the simulation of phonon frequencies in organic molecular crystals within the framework of density functional perturbation theory in a pseudo-core plane wave basis set. Specifically, we investigate how the density of the Fourier grid that is used to map real-space charge density affects the phonon frequencies and eigenvectors. We find that varying the density of this Fourier grid can affect low-frequency phonons by tens of wavenumbers and significantly alter the associated normal mode eigenvectors. Furthermore, we d…

Interlayer phonons in van der Waals (vdW) quantum materials offer promising opportunities for ultrafast control and engineering of material properties at the nanoscale. A fundamental understanding of their dephasing mechanisms is crucial for advanced phononic device applications and for probing buried interfaces. However, the interplay between interlayer phonons and quantum electronic phases remains mostly unexplored. Here, we investigate the mode-dependent dynamics of quantized interlayer breathing modes in a topological insulator using ultrafast coherent phonon spectroscopy. By varying the p…

A contrastive investigation of the symmetry aspects of phonons in monolayer chromium trihalides and their Janus structures Y3-Cr2-X3 (X, Y = F, Cl, Br, I) was presented within group theory. We classified all phonon vibration modes at the Brillouin-zone center (Γ) into irreducible representations. The infrared and Raman activity of optic phonons, Raman tensors, and the possible polarization assignments of Raman active phonons are further predicted. We clarify the discrepancy concerning the Raman and infrared activity of optic modes in monolayer CrI3. It is also found that the Raman and infrared…

Optical control of lattice dynamics with high spatiotemporal precision offers a route to manipulate local quantum states-such as magnetic, spin, and topological states-by exploiting the coupling between the lattice and other degrees of freedom. Here, deterministic strain engineering is demonstrated with spatial and temporal characteristics in van der Waals materials using spatially structured femtosecond optical fields. By confining structural oscillations at a submicron scale, phonon cavities with programmable dimensions, oscillation periods, and symmetries are engineered. Through ultrafast e

Conventional superconducting parameters Eliashberg spectral function, phonon DOS, average electron-phonon coupling constant & superconducting transition temperature of La3In were calculated at ambient and applied positive hydrostatic pressure. Ambient pressure electron-phonon coupling constant was found to be 1.43 and superconducting transition temperature was calculated to be 8.7 K which is close to the experimental reported value of 9.5 K. Logarithmic average phonon frequency at ambient pressure was found to be 6.21 × 10-3eV. Phonon dispersion relations for the ambient and applied positive h

It has been known for more than a decade that phonons can produce an off-diagonal thermal conductivity in the presence of a magnetic field. Recent studies of thermal Hall conductivity, κ_{xy}, in a variety of contexts, however, have assumed a negligibly small phonon contribution. We present a study of κ_{xy} in quantum paraelectric SrTiO_{3}, which is a nonmagnetic insulator and find that its peak value exceeds what has been reported in any other insulator, including those in which the signal has been qualified as "giant." Remarkably, κ_{xy}(T) and κ(T) peak at the same temperature and the for…

Coupled micro- and nanomechanical oscillators are of fundamental and technical interest for emerging quantum technologies. Upon interfacing with long-lived solid-state spins, the coherent manipulation of the quantum hybrid system becomes possible even at ambient conditions. Although the ability of these systems to act as a quantum bus inducing long-range spin-spin interactions has been known, the possibility to coherently couple electron/nuclear spins to the common modes of multiple oscillators and map their mechanical motion to spin-polarization has not been experimentally demonstrated. We he

Two-dimensional van der Waals materials display rich nonequilibrium physics due to their reduced dimensionality and strong light-matter interactions. Layered metal phosphorus trichalcogenides (MPX3) feature bandgaps spanning the visible to ultraviolet range and exhibit a complex interplay between excitons, phonons, and defects. Here we use static and time-resolved photoluminescence and femtosecond broadband transient reflectivity to investigate the temperature-dependent ultrafast carrier dynamics in layered HgPSe3, a semiconductor with a quasi-direct bandgap near 2 eV. We identify distinct sub…

Chiral phonons, with their intrinsic angular momentum, are potential contributors to the chiral induced spin selectivity (CISS) effect, which can induce significant spin polarization in the absence of strong spin-orbit coupling. An open question is how nonzero total phonon angular momentum may be generated. If chiral phonons are to underpin the observed CISS effect, they must have the symmetries observed in CISS experiments. That is, reversing the chirality or reversing the direction of the current flow through the active CISS structure should influence the phonon angular momentum in the same …

The discovery of two-dimensional (2D) magnets has attracted significant attention in both fundamental research in low-dimensional physics and potential applications in spintronics. CrSBr, an A-type antiferromagnetic (AFM) van der Waals material with intralayer ferromagnetic (FM) order along the b axis, stands out as one of the most extensively studied 2D magnetic materials due to the strong coupling between its electronic structure and magnetic properties. Here, we demonstrate a deep connection between the magnetic order and Raman scattering of phonons in CrSBr. By applying a magnetic field al…

The underlying mechanism of the thermal Hall effect generated by phonons in a variety of insulators is yet to be identified. In this work, we report on a sizable thermal Hall conductivity in nickel phosphorus trisulfide (NiPS3), a van der Waals stack of honeycomb layers with a zigzag antiferromagnetic order. The longitudinal (κaa) and the transverse (κab) thermal conductivities peak at the same temperature, and the thermal Hall angle, at this peak, respects a previously identified bound. The amplitude of κab is extremely sensitive to the amplitude of magnetization along the b axis but is not c…

We conduct a systematic study that couples first-principles lattice dynamics, including three- and four-phonon processes, with parameter-free electronic transport simulations to quantify the thermoelectric response of Ba4Sb2Se and Ba4Sb2Te. Four-phonon processes expand the anharmonic phase space and suppress the lattice thermal conductivity. Directional and doping trends mirror the band structure. Multiple valence and conduction band valleys increase the Seebeck coefficient while keeping the carrier mobility competitive. With three- and four-phonon processes, the peaks of the thermoelectric fi

We investigate the effect of Ce3+ substitution on the magnetic ordering and phonon dynamics of the GdCrO3 orthorhombic perovskite. The Ce doped compound exhibits long-range canted antiferromagnetism with Néel transitions, TN at ~ 173 K, accompanied by spin-flip, TSF at ~ 10 K. Ce3+ incorporation drives a modification of the spin-flip transition from the [Formula: see text]configuration to [Formula: see text] inducing a reorientation of the spin axis between the [Formula: see text]and (001) crystallographic planes. This spin reorientation is governed by Zeeman energy and produces pronounced fie

Quantum confinement in low-dimensional semiconductors modifies not only electronic states but also the underlying lattice dynamics. In halide perovskite nanoplatelets, however, how confinement influences vibrational behavior alongside structural and optical properties remains an open question. Here, we synthesize CsPbBr3 nanoplatelets with atomically defined thicknesses from 2 to 5 monolayers and examine their structural, optical, and vibrational responses. Structural characterization combined with photoluminescence spectroscopy and first-principles calculations confirms reliable thickness con

Group-IVB transition-metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) have recently emerged as a promising material platform for extreme light confinement, with Hf-based compounds demonstrating confinement factors exceeding two orders of magnitude in the far-infrared. As a complementary Zr-based member of this material family, zirconium disulfide ( ZrS 2 ) combines a comparably broad first Reststrahlen band with semiconducting electronic character, providing a wide spectral window for phonon-dominated far-infrared hyperbolic polaritonics. Here, we report the first experimental demonstration of far-infrared hyper

Thermal Hall effect (THE) in insulators is a remarkable phenomenon that arises from the motion of chargeless quasiparticles under a magnetic field. While magnons or various exotic excitations were considered as the origin of THE in some magnetic materials, there is more and more evidence suggesting that phonons play a significant role. However, the mechanism behind phonon THE is still unknown. Here we report the observation of THE, including planar THE, in a broad range of nonmagnetic insulators and semiconductors: SrTiO_{3}, SiO_{2} (quartz), MgO, MgAl_{2}O_{4}, Si, and Ge. While the presence…

The study of phonon dynamics and its interplay with magnetic ordering is crucial for understanding the unique quantum phases in the pyrochlore iridates. Here, through inelastic x-ray scattering on a single crystal sample of the pyrochlore iridate Eu2Ir2O7, we map out the phonon excitation spectra in Eu2Ir2O7and compare them with the theoretical phonon spectra calculated using the density functional theory. Possible phonon renormalization across the magnetic long-range order transition is observed in our experiments, which is consistent with the results of the previous Raman scattering experime
