[Influence of long-term fertilization on phosphorus fertility of calcareous soil I. Organic matter, total phosphorus and available phosphorus].

A 23 years-located experiment of wheat-corn rotation showed that long term application of animal manure combined with chemical fertilizer contributed greater to the contents of soil organic matter, total phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus and available phosphorus. Applying chemical fertilizer could increase soil organic matter, total phosphorus, inorganic phosphorus and available phosphorus contents, but the increment was lower than treatments animal manure and fallow. Compared with no fertilization, different fertilization treatment had its own distribution characteristics of soil organic matte

Acute High Dietary Phosphorus Following Low-Phosphorus Diet Acclimation Does Not Enhance Intestinal Fractional Phosphorus Absorption in Nephrectomized Male Rats.

Dietary phosphorus restriction and phosphorus binders are commonly prescribed for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). However, occurrences of non-adherence to these interventions are common. As low-phosphorus (LP) diets have been consistently experimentally shown in vitro to increase intestinal phosphorus absorption efficiency, a bout of non-adherence to diet or binders may cause an unintended consequence of enhanced intestinal phosphorus absorption. Thus, we aimed to determine the effect of a single bout of high-phosphorus (HP) intake after acclimation to a LP diet. Male Sprague Dawle

Eudicots from severely phosphorus-impoverished environments preferentially allocate phosphorus to their mesophyll.

Plants allocate nutrients to specific leaf cell types, with commelinoid monocots preferentially allocating phosphorus (P) to the mesophyll and calcium (Ca) to the epidermis, whereas the opposite is thought to occur in eudicots. However, Proteaceae from severely P-impoverished habitats present the same P-allocation pattern as monocots. This raises the question of whether preferential P allocation to mesophyll cells is a phylogenetically conserved trait, exclusive to commelinoid monocots and a few Proteaceae, or a trait that has evolved multiple times to allow plants to cope with very low soil P

Phosphorus resource partitioning shapes phosphorus acquisition and plant species abundance in grasslands.

Species diversity is commonly hypothesized to result from trade-offs for different limiting resources, providing separate niches for coexisting species1-4. As soil nutrients occur in multiple chemical forms, plant differences in acquisition of the same element derived from different compounds may represent unique niche dimensions5,6. Because plant productivity of ecosystems is often limited by phosphorus7, and because plants have evolved diverse adaptations to acquire soil phosphorus6,8, a promising yet untested hypothesis is phosphorus resource partitioning6,9,10. Here, we provided two differ

Capturing the lost phosphorus.

Minable phosphorus (P) reserves are being depleted and will need to be replaced by recovering P that currently is lost from the agricultural system, causing water-quality problems. The largest two flows of lost P are in agricultural runoff and erosion (∼46% of mined P globally) and animal wastes (∼40%). These flows are quite distinct. Runoff has a very high volumetric flow rate, but a low P concentration; animal wastes have low flow rates, but a high P concentration together with a high concentration of organic material. Recovering the lost P in animal wastes is technically and economically mo

Glycoconjugates via phosphorus ylides.

A facile, high yielding access to rare chimeric compounds combining phosphorus ylides with complex glycosyl formamides is described. We determined x-ray structures gaining structural insight into this compounds class. In addition, data mining of similar compounds deposited within the Cambridge Structural Database was performed. These derivatives could be used either as synthetic intermediates via the ylide functionalization and glyco chemical biology synthons or improving the pharmacokinetic properties of a potential bioactive molecule, exploiting the glycosyl moiety.

Mediterranean-like Dietary Pattern and Serum Phosphorus in Hemodialysis: Beyond Food Phosphorus Content.

BACKGROUND: Disturbances in mineral and bone metabolism are common in hemodialysis (HD) patients, increasing the risk of hyperphosphatemia. Dietary phosphorus restriction remains a cornerstone of management, often leading to stringent dietary recommendations. This study aimed to explore whether adopting a Mediterranean-like dietary pattern (Med-LDP), compared to a Western-like dietary pattern (West-LDP) was associated with serum phosphorus levels. METHODS: This cross-sectional multicenter study included 564 HD patients from 37 dialysis centers. Dietary intake was assessed using a food frequen

Enhanced rock weathering increased soil phosphorus availability and altered root phosphorus-acquisition strategies.

Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) has been proposed as a measure to enhance the carbon (C)-sequestration potential and fertility of soils. The effects of this practice on the soil phosphorus (P) pools and the general mechanisms affecting microbial P cycling, as well as plant P uptake are not well understood. Here, the impact of ERW on soil P availability and microbial P cycling functional groups and root P-acquisition traits were explored through a 2-year wollastonite field addition experiment in a tropical rubber plantation. The results show that ERW significantly increased soil microbial carbon

Calcium-modified granular attapulgite removed phosphorus from synthetic wastewater containing low-strength phosphorus.

Traditional biological processes combined with chemical precipitation methods can effectively reduce phosphate concentration in wastewater. However, discharge standards required additional advanced treatment technologies, and the removal of low phosphorus concentration is complicated and expensive. This study proposes application of a simple and recyclable adsorbent to remove low-concentration phosphorus from water. The removal efficiency of phosphorus from low-strength synthetic wastewater was investigated and the adsorption mechanism was analyzed. When the initial phosphorus concentration wa

Sediment phosphorus extractants for phosphorus-31 nuclear magnetic resonance analysis: a quantitative evaluation.

The influence of pre-extractant, extractant, and post-extractant on total extracted amounts of P and organic P compound groups measured with 31P nuclear magnetic resonance (31P-NMR) in lacustrine sediment was examined. The main extractants investigated were sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and sodium hydroxide ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (NaOH-EDTA) with bicarbonate buffered dithionite (BD) or EDTA as pre-extractants. Post extractions were conducted using either NaOH or NaOH-EDTA, depending on the main extractant. Results showed that the most efficient combination of extractants for total P yield w

Is Phosphorus the "Key" of cancer?

Bobko et al. reported a very interesting article concerning the impact of interstitial inorganic phosphate (Pi) on tumor progression. Previous studies have shown that blood levels of Pi might be related with either the presence or growth of cancer in the human body. Heroin-addicted persons have normal values of Pi, while the incidence of cancer in these individuals seems to be very low. The question rises: Is Pi the key of cancer? Further studies are definitely needed, focusing on the correlation between inorganic Pi and cancer.

A Quick Reference on Phosphorus.

Phosphorus, or phosphate, is the body's major intracellular anion involved in numerous biological processes. Most phosphate is intracellular, with the remaining amount contained within soft tissues and the extracellular space. Parathyroid hormone, calcitriol, calcitonin, and phosphatonins regulate normal phosphate homeostasis by adjusting renal and/or gastrointestinal absorption and/or excretion. Hypophosphatemia occurs secondary to decreased gastrointestinal absorption, transcellular shifts, increased renal excretion, or some combination of these general mechanisms. Hyperphosphatemia results

Disorders of phosphorus homeostasis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The study of phosphorus physiology and investigations into clinical disorders of phosphorus metabolism has blossomed over the past decade. Recent work has confirmed and further extended our knowledge of basic mechanisms of phosphorus metabolism. RECENT FINDINGS: This review will focus on FGF-23 and Klotho, and on the recent further dissection of their roles in phosphorus and skeletal metabolism. Additionally, this review will detail recent studies that implicate a role for these phosphaturic and vitamin D regulating factors in extraskeletal calcification, including that occ

Phosphorus in prebiotic chemistry.

The prebiotic synthesis of phosphorus-containing compounds-such as nucleotides and polynucleotides-would require both a geologically plausible source of the element and pathways for its incorporation into chemical systems on the primitive Earth. The mineral apatite, which is the only significant source of phosphate on Earth, has long been thought to be problematical in this respect due to its low solubility and reactivity. However, in the last decade or so, at least two pathways have been demonstrated which would circumvent these perceived problems. In addition, recent results would seem to su

Phosphorus deficiency and hypophosphatemia.

Low serum phosphorus levels, sometimes associated with depletion of phosphorus stores, can engender a variety of serious, often life-threatening physiologic changes. The proximate cause of this dangerous situation is usually medical intervention in such conditions as alcoholism and diabetic ketoacidosis, which can produce a shift of phosphorus within the body unless preventive measures are instituted.
