UNLABELLED: Objective(s : Cleft lip/palate are common congenital anomalies, affecting approximately 2/1000 live births. Pierre Robin Sequence is a subgroup of the cleft palate population. Chromosomal abnormalities near the SOX9 gene disrupt the regulation of this gene and prevent the SOX9 protein from properly controlling the development of facial structures, which leads to isolated PRS. The present study was conducted to identify the role of the SOX9 gene in the etiology of Pierre robin syndrome and to study the association of SOX9 and PRS in regulating morphogenesis of the face in individual…

OBJECTIVES: Classically, Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction, although frequently associated with cleft palate. Current literature reports that Stickler syndrome is the most common syndrome associated with PRS, and 22q11 deletion syndrome (22q11 DS) as the second most common. This study identifies associations between PRS and genetic syndromes.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review was performed to identify patients diagnosed with PRS over a 10-year period from 4/1/2007 to 4/1/2017 at a tertiary children's hospital.
RESULTS: 4,052 cons

Ischiospinal Dysostosis (ISD) is a complex and very rare medical entity. It is associated with kyphoscoliosis, dysplasia or aplasia of the ischial rami, segmental anomalies of the bony vertebrae, and peculiar facial morphologies. In this case report, we present a child with Ischiospinal Dysostosis and Pierre-Robin Syndrome. This case report is unique as we followed the patient for 13 years in which he had multiple spinal procedures to treat his kyphoscoliosis. In this paper, we elucidated the number of case reports with documented follow-up regarding spinal cord injury or other complications o

In a series of Pierre Robin syndrome (PRS) and isolated cleft palate patients (ICP) both U- and V-formed clefts were observed with equal frequency, but the PRS clefts were in average slightly wider. There were totally submucous clefts among the PRS patients. There was no statistical difference between the groups in the prevalence of clefts in the relatives of the patients. The incidence of (genetically influenced) conical elevations in the lower lip was lowest in the noncleft subjects, high in ICP and highest in PRS children. The incidence of hypodontia, which acceptedly is genetically influen…

CONTEXT: The disorder currently accepted as Pierre Robin syndrome/anomaly/sequence (PRS) has been plagued by controversy ever since initially being described. Controversy exists not only about the appropriate terminology and etiopathogenesis of the disorder but also about its management. Clinical findings and treatment outcomes of a large database of 266 PRS cases were compared with the current state of knowledge in the scientific literature, relating to history, clinical description, diagnostic criteria, epidemiology, theories of oligohydramnios, mandibular catch-up growth, midfacial hyperpla…

A survey of the records of 26 consecutive cases of the Robin anomalad, admitted in the first year of life, was undertaken to review the time at which airway obstruction was first noted to occur after birth. Sixteen cases required active treatment for episodes of airway obstruction associated with cyanosis. Of these, 11 developed obstruction on the first day of life, but five did not obstruct until later (3-21 days). Two infants, both from the early presentation group, died as a result of airway obstruction at 13 and 95 days of age. Management techniques varied over the 11 year period studied,

CASE REPORT: Pierre-Robin syndrome (PRS) is a rare congenital malformation that shows severe micrognathia and cleft soft palate. A 15-year-old boy who was admitted with occipital headache and gait disturbance was diagnosed with PRS. Radiological evaluation revealed severe herniation of the cerebellar tonsil and multiple craniovertebral osseous anomalies. We carried out foramen magnum decompression (FMD) with duroplasty. Postoperative MRI showed the cerebellar tonsil was freed from strangulation.
RESULT AND CONCLUSION: This patient presented with the common finding between PRS and Chiari type

A boy with Pierre Robin syndrome and his capability to attend elementary school are presented. In addition to basic features of the syndrome (micrognathia, glossoptosis, cleft palate), the boy had a congenital heart anomaly (atrial and ventricular septal defect) and hearing impairment. Results of the testing before enrollment in the elementary school showed motor deficit, lover than average level of intellectual functioning (IQ = 80-85), hyperactivity and attention deficit. The boy was enrolled in the regular elementary school, with adapted teaching program.

For some children with a diagnosis of Robin syndrome the conservative treatment will not be sufficient due to recurrent glossoptosis and acute obturation of the airways which leads to asphyxia. The risk for children with this complication is so serious that it needs emergency surgical treatment. Its aim is an artificial ankyloglossia. However, often it fails when the stitches cut through. The technique of tongue fixation presented in this paper has proved successful.

Infants with Pierre Robin syndrome often present the anaesthesiologist with the challenge of upper airway obstruction and difficult tracheal intubation. An unconventional method for solving this problem was used in a 2 week old 2.2 kg term male infant who presented with severe micrognathia, a widely cleft palate and extreme glossoptosis. Hyperextension of the head in the prone position distracted the epiglottis from the glottis. Blind nasotracheal intubation was then used. The curve of the nasotracheal tube made it pass behind the epiglottis into the larynx.

Pierre Robin sequence is a triad of micrognathia, glossoptosis, and airway obstruction that has reported associations with numerous birth defects and anomalies including craniocervical pathologies. Given the number of airway assessments and neck manipulations these neonates experience, undetected cervical instability can result in detrimental consequences. The authors present a case of a neonate with non-syndromic Pierre Robin sequence planned for mandibular distraction osteogenesis that developed abnormal motor activity following intubation. The patient was eventually diagnosed with cervical

Pierre Robin sequence (PRS) is an association of clinical features consisting of mandibular hypoplasia, cleft secondary palate, and glossoptosis leading to obstructive apnea and feeding difficulties. PRS can occur as an isolated condition or can be found in association with a range of other features in a number of conditions including Treacher collins and Stickler syndromes. The frequent association of the PRS triad suggests a common underlying developmental mechanism which impacts on each of these tissues. Isolated PRS is typically sporadic but when familial usually exhibits autosomal dominan
