[Plagiocephaly with telorbitism].

The case of a 5-year-old child, who is hospitalized for right eye deviation in divergence and facial asymmetry, is presented. The clinical exam together with the radiologic exploration, form the diagnosis of plagiocephaly with telorbitism. The plagiocephaly is a craniostenosis determined by early unilateral synostosis of the coronal link, and it is the cause of the malformation of interorbital space.

Positional Plagiocephaly and Craniosynostosis.

Along with the decrease in sudden infant death syndrome due to the successful "Back to Sleep" Campaign, there was a reciprocal increase in cases of positional plagiocephaly (PP). The prevalence of PP significantly rose from approximately 5% to upward of 46% at age 7 months. Consequently, clinicians have seen a surge in the number of patients presenting with head shape abnormalities. Not only does this increase in patient volume pose a logistical problem to clinics, but it also poses a potential risk to patients with craniosynostosis, whose head shape anomalies are similar to a "needle in a hay…

[The plastic surgery for plagiocephaly].

OBJECTIVE: To sum up three types of plastic procedures for frontal plagiocephaly Based on the principle of floating forehead, the plagiocephaly (unilateral coronal synostosis). METHODS: was corrected and orbito-frontal reconstruction was performed by orbito-frontal advancement, 'or temporoparietal osteotomy, or fronto-parietal osteotomy. The absorbable plates and microscrews composed of From January 2008 to polylactide polymers, were used to immobilize calvarial segments. RESULTS: December 2010, 9 cases of plagiocephaly were treated with satisfactory result and no severe complication. The pa…

[Prevention of positional plagiocephaly].

Since the beginning of 90's, there is an increasing incidence of deformational plagiocephaly (DP). Based upon observational studies, some authors proposed to provide parents with advices about positioning infants. We recently observed that early specific counselling about "unrestricted motility", as suggested by E. Pikler, during maternity stay, is able to significantly reduce the incidence of DP at 4 months of life. In agreement with recent studies we did not observe a relationship between sleeping position and the occurrence of DP. Flattened head at birth was not an independent risk factor f…

FGFR mutations and plagiocephaly.

FGFR genes have important effects on bone development, and mutations in 4 "hot spot" exons of FGFR1-3 are found in many patients with craniosynostosis and some with synostotic plagiocephaly. To test the hypothesis that sequence variation in those exons predisposes toward developmental bone deformation, we assayed 160 children with nonsynostotic plagiocephaly by temporal temperature gradient gel electrophoresis. No sequence variation was found, indicating that mutations in the "hot spot" exons are not associated with this common developmental condition; however, we did not assay most of the exo…

Palpatory diagnosis of plagiocephaly.

INTRODUCTION: The term plagiocephaly, from the Greek plagios (oblique) and kephalê (head), means distortion of the head, and refers clinically to cranial asymmetry. Cranial Osteopathy, since it was first proposed, has focussed upon the diagnosis and treatment of birth trauma and cranial asymmetries, and consequently specific therapy for plagiocephalic deformities has been described. Osteopathic manipulation also has been proposed as a treatment for torticollis, a condition associated with plagiocephaly. For these reasons, we decided to look at the mechanics of the occipital bone and the adjace…

The skull base in plagiocephaly.

Between 1975 and 1992, 426 children with craniofacial malformations were treated in the Department of Pediatric Neurosurgery at the Hôpital des Enfants de la Timone in Marseille. Plagiocephaly was present in 71 (16.6%). The authors present a reproducible analysis of the skull base in plagiocephaly based on these 71 patients. A control group of Mediterranean children (n = 20) was used for comparison. Clinical anthropometric patterns were analyzed in all cases. Comparison with the control group showed a difference only in the nasion-lambda distance. Data obtained from clinical anthropometry were…

[Vertical strabismus in plagiocephaly].

Plagiocephaly is cranial synostosis caused by premature closure of one half of the coronal suture. It is manifested by asymmetry of the face of a varying degree with vertical strabismus on the affected side and tilting of the head to the sound side. The vertical deviation imitates ocular torticollis, there are, however, no signs of paresis nor a positive Bielschowski test. Treatment involves early opening of the coronal synostosis or later at least treatment of vertical strabismus. The authors operated successfully a 14-year-old girl with medium grade plagiocephaly. They describe the preoperat…

Deformational Plagiocephaly: A Review.

Deformational plagiocephaly (DP) is a common condition and the leading cause of head shape abnormalities in infants. It is characterized by asymmetrical distortion of the skull resulting from external forces on the back of the head. DP has become more prevalent in infants and has increased dramatically since the introduction in 1994 of the “Back to Sleep” campaign. Management of this condition is not often covered by insurance, and can be costly and lengthy; However, DP can be prevented. Early recognition and management can make a significant difference in patients’ outcomes and reduce the cos…

The surgical treatment of plagiocephaly.

AIM: Anterior plagiocephaly usually occurs with premature synostosis of the ipsilateral half of the coronal suture. The forehead is flattened on the affected side, with a backward and upward displacement of the affected orbit. The bulging of the calvaria may occur in the contralateral parietal area. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This article presents the surgical techniques used over 7 years to treat plagiocephalic children. Eleven patients with unilateral coronal synostosis treated during 2003-2010 were analyzed retrospectively. The study included reviews of pre and postoperative computed tomography…

Head moulding for plagiocephaly.

BACKGROUND: The purpose of this study was to describe a one-stage operation for posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with use of an Achilles tendon-bone allograft and a posterolateral corner reconstruction with use of two different methods, with a comparison of clinical outcomes in the two groups. METHODS: Our study included forty-six patients who had undergone posterior cruciate ligament reconstruction with use of an Achilles tendon-bone allograft and posterolateral corner reconstruction with either anatomical reconstruction of the lateral collateral ligament and popliteus tendon with
