The NAC Transcription Factor Gene OsY37 (ONAC011) Promotes Leaf Senescence and Accelerates Heading Time in Rice.

Leaf senescence is an important physiological process involving the degradation of a number of metabolites and their remobilization to new reproductive and storage organs. NAC (NAM, ATAF, and CUC) transcription factors are reported as important regulators of the senescence process. Here, we describe the identification and functional characterization of the NAC transcription factor gene, OsY37 (Oryza sativa Yellow37, ONAC011) obtained from Oryza sativa cv. indica, and japonica. We created transgenic plants expressing the OsY37 gene under the control of a strong and constitutive CaMV35S promoter

Molecular basis of delayed leaf senescence induced by short-term treatment with low phosphate in rice.

Leaf senescence is a programmed plant developmental process that can also be regulated by environmental factors, like nutrient availability. Although phosphorus is an essential element determining plants' growth, mechanisms underlying adaptation to phosphorus availability in plants are not well understood. In this study, we combined physiological, biochemical and molecular approaches to investigate the effect of phosphate supply on leaf senescence in rice, one of the world's most important crops. We show that short-term treatment of rice seedlings with low phosphate increases photosynthetic pi

A 3-bp deletion of WLS5 gene leads to weak growth and early leaf senescence in rice.

BACKGROUND: In rice (Oryza sativa) and other grains, weak growth (dwarfism, short panicle length, and low seed-setting rate) and early senescence lead to reduced yield. The molecular mechanisms behind these processes have been widely studied; however, the complex genetic regulatory networks controlling growth and senescence require further elucidation. RESULTS: We isolated a mutant exhibiting weak growth throughout development and early senescence of leaf tips, and designated this mutant weakness and leaf senescence5 (wls5). Histological analysis showed that the poor growth of wls5 plants inv

Arabidopsis WRKY1 promotes monocarpic senescence by integrative regulation of flowering, leaf senescence, and nitrogen remobilization.

Monocarpic senescence, characterized by whole-plant senescence following a single flowering phase, is widespread in seed plants, particularly in crops, determining seed harvest time and quality. However, how external and internal signals are systemically integrated into monocarpic senescence remains largely unknown. Here, we report that the Arabidopsis thaliana transcription factor WRKY1 plays essential roles in multiple key steps of monocarpic senescence. WRKY1 expression is induced by age, salicylic acid (SA), and nitrogen (N) deficiency. Flowering and leaf senescence are accelerated in the …

TGA6 directly activates ABF2 and ABF3 to promote leaf senescence in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Leaf senescence is a tightly regulated developmental process governed by a complex transcriptional network. Although the TGACG motif-binding (TGA) family of basic leucine zipper (bZIP) transcription factors are well-characterized regulators of plant defense responses, their roles in leaf senescence remain poorly understood. Here, we report that overexpression of TGA6 in Arabidopsis thaliana promotes early leaf senescence. Independent TGA6-overexpressing lines displayed premature leaf yellowing and significantly lower chlorophyll levels than wild-type (WT) plants under both normal growth and da

Ascorbic acid deficiency activates cell death and disease resistance responses in Arabidopsis.

Programmed cell death, developmental senescence, and responses to pathogens are linked through complex genetic controls that are influenced by redox regulation. Here we show that the Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana) low vitamin C mutants, vtc1 and vtc2, which have between 10% and 25% of wild-type ascorbic acid, exhibit microlesions, express pathogenesis-related (PR) proteins, and have enhanced basal resistance against infections caused by Pseudomonas syringae. The mutants have a delayed senescence phenotype with smaller leaf cells than the wild type at maturity. The vtc leaves have more glut

Hydrogen Sulfide Regulates Energy Production to Delay Leaf Senescence Induced by Drought Stress in Arabidopsis.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) is a novel gasotransmitter in both mammals and plants. H2S plays important roles in various plant developmental processes and stress responses. Leaf senescence is the last developmental stage and is a sequential degradation process that eventually leads to leaf death. A mutation of the H2S-producing enzyme-encoding gene L-cysteine desulfhydrase1 (DES1) leads to premature leaf senescence but the underlying mechanisms are not clear. In this present study, wild-type, DES1 defective mutant (des1) and over-expression (OE-DES1) Arabidopsis plants were used to investigate the u

Adaptive phenology of desert and Mediterranean populations of annual plants grown with and without water stress.

The dynamics of vegetative and reproductive growth were compared in matched pairs of Mediteranean and desert populations of three unrelated … ed the transition to flowering in B. fasciculatus (by 1-2 days) and in B. distachyon (by 4-6 days). Plant senescence was strongly enhanced by water stress, and this enhancement was greater in desert populations than in corresponding Mediterranean ones. Duration of life cycle was greatly shortened by water stress in all three species. Desert and Mediterranean popul …

Salicylic acid 3-hydroxylase regulates Arabidopsis leaf longevity by mediating salicylic acid catabolism.

The plant hormone salicylic acid (SA) plays critical roles in plant defense, stress responses, and senescence. Although SA biosynthesis is well understood, the pathways by which SA is catabolized remain elusive. Here we report the identification and characterization of an SA 3-hydroxylase (S3H) involved in SA catabolism during leaf senescence. S3H is associated with senescence and is inducible by SA and is thus a key part of a negative feedback regulation system of SA levels during senescence. The enzyme converts SA (with a Km of 58.29 µM) to both 2,3-dihydroxybenzoic acid (2,3-DHBA) and 2,5-D

Phospholipase Dα1 Acts as a Negative Regulator of High Mg2+-Induced Leaf Senescence in Arabidopsis.

Magnesium (Mg2+) is a macronutrient involved in essential cellular processes. Its deficiency or excess is a stress factor for plants, seriously affecting their growth and development and therefore, its accurate regulation is essential. Recently, we discovered that phospholipase Dα1 (PLDα1) activity is vital in the stress response to high-magnesium conditions in Arabidopsis roots. This study shows that PLDα1 acts as a negative regulator of high-Mg2+-induced leaf senescence in Arabidopsis. The level of phosphatidic acid produced by PLDα1 and the amount of PLDα1 in the leaves increase in plants t

The RhWRKY33a-RhPLATZ9 regulatory module delays petal senescence by suppressing rapid reactive oxygen species accumulation in rose flowers.

Redox homeostasis in plant cells is critical for maintaining normal growth and development because reactive oxygen species (ROS) can function as signaling molecules or toxic compounds. However, how plants fine-tune redox homeostasis during natural or stress-induced senescence remains unclear. Cut roses (Rosa hybrida), an economically important ornamental product worldwide, often undergo stress-induced precocious senescence at the post-harvest bud stage. Here, we identified RhPLATZ9, an age- and dehydration-induced PLATZ (plant AT-rich sequence and zinc-binding) protein, and determined that it

Induction of senescence and identification of differentially expressed genes in tomato in response to monoterpene.

Monoterpenes, which are among the major components of plant essential oils, are known for their ecological roles as well for pharmaceutical properties. Geraniol, an acyclic monoterpene induces cell cycle arrest and apoptosis/senescence in various cancer cells and plants; however, the genes involved in the process and the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, we demonstrate that treatment of tomato plants with geraniol results in induction of senescence due to a substantial alteration in transcriptome. We have identified several geraniol-responsive protein enco

Ultra-low concentration of chlorine dioxide regulates stress-caused premature leaf senescence in tobacco by modulating auxin, ethylene, and chlorophyll biosynthesis.

Exploring novel growth regulators for premature senescence regulation is important for tobacco production. In the present study, chlorine dioxide (ClO2) was explored as a novel plant growth regulator for tobacco growth, particularly its effect on leaf senescence and root development. The results showed that 0.15 μM ClO2 maintained the lushness of detached leaves and whole plants. Also, the leaves of ClO2-treated plants exhibited a chlorophyll content of 58% higher than in CK (control) plants (P < 0.05). Besides, ClO2 treatment increased the biomass of roots and aboveground parts by 54 and 16%,

Repeated Summer Drought and Re-watering during the First Growing Year of Oak (Quercus petraea) Delay Autumn Senescence and Bud Burst in the Following Spring.

Climate change predicts harsher summer droughts for mid-latitudes in Europe. To enhance our understanding of the putative impacts on forest regeneration, we studied the response of oak seedlings (Quercus petraea) to water deficit. Potted seedlings originating from three locally sourced provenances were subjected to two successive drought periods during the first growing season each followed by a plentiful re-watering. Here, we describe survival and phenological responses after the second drought treatment, applying general linear mixed modeling. From the 441 drought treated seedlings 189 subsi

Transcriptional Analysis Reveals Different Fertilizer Treatments Improve the Yield and Quality of Tomato Fruits by Postponing Age-Triggered Senescence.

Inappropriate fertilization has led to adverse environmental effects and food-safety issues. Biostimulants have been widely used to improve the growth, yield, and quality of crops. However, the effects of biostimulants on age-triggered senescence in plants, which affect the later yield and quality, have scarcely been reported. In this study, the fertilization formulas that were modified according to the requirements of plants in different growth stages, and adding yeast extract agents or microorganisms were respectively used in soilless tomato culture as three fertilization treatments. The Yam

Large-scale genome-wide association study reveals that drought-induced lodging in grain sorghum is associated with plant height and traits linked to carbon remobilisation.

We detected 213 lodging QTLs and demonstrated that drought-induced stem lodging in grain sorghum is substantially associated with stay-green and plant height suggesting a critical role of carbon remobilisation. Sorghum is generally grown in water limited conditions and often lodges under post-anthesis drought, which reduces yield and quality. Due to its complexity, our understanding on the genetic control of lodging is very limited. We dissected the genetic architecture of lodging in grain sorghum through genome-wide association study (GWAS) on 2308 unique hybrids grown in 17 Australian sorghu

ATM suppresses leaf senescence triggered by DNA double-strand break through epigenetic control of senescence-associated genes in Arabidopsis.

All living organisms are unavoidably exposed to various endogenous and environmental stresses that trigger potentially fatal DNA damage, including double-strand breaks (DSBs). Although a growing body of evidence indicates that DNA damage is one of the prime drivers of aging in animals, little is known regarding the importance of DNA damage and its repair on lifespan control in plants. We found that the level of DSBs increases but DNA repair efficiency decreases as Arabidopsis leaves age. Generation of DSBs by inducible expression of I-PpoI leads to premature senescence phenotypes. We examined

Endophytes Across the Plant Life Cycle: Potential Roles in Plant Protection, Litter Decomposition, and Nutrient Cycling.

Endophytes are diverse microorganisms inhabiting plant tissues that can promote plant growth, enhance stress tolerance, or suppress pathogens. However, the ecological roles of endophytes after host senescence and death remain poorly understood. This review examines how a subset of endophytes helps maintain ecosystem function in living plants, senescent tissues, litter, and associated microbial environments. Mechanisms of endophyte-mediated plant protection in living plants include pathogen inhibition, host regulation, nutrient acquisition, and abiotic stress tolerance. We also investigate post

The Separate Roles of Vascular Plants and Sphagnum Mosses in Regulating the Net CO2 Exchange in a Boreal Peatland During Key Phenological Phases.

Boreal peatlands provide an important carbon store, which is highly susceptible to future changes in the global climate. Predictions of climate feedbacks on the peatland carbon balance require an in-depth understanding of how vegetation dynamics and environmental conditions jointly govern the production and decomposition of organic matter. However, detailed knowledge on the separate roles of plant functional groups (PFGs) in regulating peatland production and respiration fluxes in response to various abiotic factors at sub-seasonal scales is currently lacking. In this study, we used high-tempo

Roles of a Cysteine Desulfhydrase LCD1 in Regulating Leaf Senescence in Tomato.

Hydrogen sulfide (H2S), a novel gasotransmitter in both mammals and plants, plays important roles in plant development and stress responses. Leaf senescence represents the final stage of leaf development. The role of H2S-producing enzyme L-cysteine desulfhydrase in regulating tomato leaf senescence is still unknown. In the present study, the effect of an L-cysteine desulfhydrase LCD1 on leaf senescence in tomato was explored by physiological analysis. LCD1 mutation caused earlier leaf senescence, whereas LCD1 overexpression significantly delayed leaf senescence compared with the wild type in 1
