Salicylic acid and RNA interference mediate antiviral immunity of plant stem cells.

Stem cells are essential for the development and organ regeneration of multicellular organisms, so their infection by pathogenic viruses must be prevented. Accordingly, mammalian stem cells are highly resistant to viral infection due to dedicated antiviral pathways including RNA interference (RNAi). In plants, a small group of stem cells harbored within the shoot apical meristem generate all postembryonic above-ground tissues, including the germline cells. Many viruses do not proliferate in these cells, yet the molecular bases of this exclusion remain only partially understood. Here, we show t

Multifaceted plant growth-promoting traits of indigenous rhizospheric microbes against Phomopsis theae, a causal agent of stem canker in tea plants.

Phomopsis canker is one of the major devastating stem diseases that occur in tea plants caused by the fungal pathogen Phomopsis theae. Rapid development of this disease leads to a capital loss in the tea industry which demands an ecofriendly disease management strategy to control this aggressive pathogen. A total of 245 isolates were recovered from the tea rhizosphere and screened for in vitro plant growth promoting (PGP) traits and antagonism against P. theae. Among them, twelve isolates exhibited multifarious PGP traits including phytohormones, siderophore, hydrogen cyanide, salicylic acid p

Medicinal plant extracts interfere in gastric cancer stem cells fluorescence-based assays.

Fluorescence is used in various biological assays due to its high sensitivity, versatility, and precision. In recent years, studies using medicinal plant extracts have increased. However, fluorescence-based assays could be biased by plant metabolites autofluorescence. To address this issue, this study investigated the interference caused by methanolic extracts and chloroform fractions of three medicinal plants in three fluorescence-based assays on gastric cancer stem cells(CSC): resazurin reduction, confocal microscopy, and flow cytometry. CSC were isolated based on CD44 surface marker, incuba

Larvicidal activity of latex and stem bark of Euphorbia tirucalli plant on the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus.

The methanolic, chloroform and ether extracts of Euphorbia tirucalli latex and stem bark were evaluated for larvicidal activity against laboratory-reared larvae of Culex quinquefasciatus (Diptera: Culicidae), vector of the brancroftian filariasis and worst urban nuisance mosquito. The latex extracts contain more potent larvicidal components (177.14 mg/L-326.37 mg/L) than the stem bark extracts (237.663 mg/L-513.39 mg/L). The order of toxicity (LC50) for the latex extracts was Methanol extract (177.14 mg/L) > Chloroform (200.76 mg/L) > Ether (326.37 mg/L) while the rank of order of toxicity (LC

Barley Stem Bending Resistance Declines During Maturation, Then Peaks in Ripe, Dry Plants.

Barley lodging-specifically stem lodging-occurs when the bending moments from wind and ear weight exceed the culm's load-bearing capacity. Lodging risk decreases as plant height decreases and culm strength increases. Geometry (stem diameter, culm wall thickness) and material strength determine culm bending strength. By studying changes in stem mechanical properties (at three positions along the culm) in two genotypes (grown in a greenhouse), we found that culm strength (assessed with a three-point bending test) slightly diminished through ripening owing to a decline in both area moment of iner

Plants and Their Bioactive Constituents in Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Based Periodontal Regeneration: A Novel Prospective.

Periodontitis is a common chronic inflammatory disease, which causes the destruction of both the soft and mineralized tissues. However, current treatments such as bone graft materials, barrier membranes, and protein products all have difficulties in regenerating the complete periodontal tissue structure. Stem cell-based tissue engineering has now emerged as one of the most effective treatments for the patients suffering from periodontal diseases. Plants not only can be substrates for life processes, but also contain hormones or functional molecules. Numbers of preclinical studies have revealed

Oviposition behavior of the wheat stem sawfly when encountering plants infested with cryptic conspecifics.

Insect herbivores typically oviposit on the most suitable hosts, but choices can be modulated by detection of potential competition among conspecifics, especially when eggs are deposited cryptically. Larvae of the wheat stem sawfly, Cephus cinctus Norton, developing within an already infested stem, experience elevated risk when only one will survive because of cannibalism. To increase our understanding of host selection when the choices made by females can lead to severe intraspecific competition, females were presented with either uninfested wheat plants or with plants previously exposed to o

Cancer Stem Cells and Medicinal Plants, A Comprehensive Review of their Potential in Tumor Suppression and Recurrence Prevention.

INTRODUCTION: Cancer Stem Cells (CSCs) drive tumor initiation, progression, and recurrence due to their self-renewal and differentiation capacities. Herbal medicines offer potential for targeting CSCs by disrupting key pathways, inducing apoptosis, and enhancing the efficacy of conventional therapy. This review evaluates the effectiveness of plant-based compounds in suppressing CSCs across various cancers. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted across databases (ISI Web of Science, PubMed, ScienceDirect, Scopus, Biological Abstracts, Chemical Abstracts) up to March 2025, using keywords su

Bacterial and Fungal Communities Associated with the Ectomycorrhizospheric Soil and Stem Endosphere of the Mycoheterotrophic Plant Monotropa uniflora.

The mycoheterotrophic plant Monotropa uniflora relies on fungal symbionts for carbon and nutrient acquisition. However, its interactions with other microbial groups, beyond ectomycorrhizal fungi, remain unexplored. Here, we characterized bacterial and fungal communities associated with M. uniflora across two compartments: ectomycorrhizospheric soil linked to the mycorrhizal network and the surface-sterilized lower stem endosphere. Microbial community composition was assessed using high-throughput amplicon sequencing of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene and the fungal ITS region. Fungal richness was

Emergence of lignin-carbohydrate interactions during plant stem maturation visualized by solid-state NMR.

Lignification waterproofs and strengthens secondary plant cell walls but increases the energy cost of sugar release for biofuels. The physical association between lignin and the carbohydrate scaffold that accommodates lignin polymerization, along with the distinct roles of lignin units and carbohydrate partners during lignification, remain unclear. Here, we map lignin-carbohydrate spatial proximity by solid-state NMR in 13C-labeled Arabidopsis inflorescence stems during secondary cell wall formation. Analyses include wild-type plants and mutants that selectively or globally disrupt lignin bios

Effects of phytoestrogens and other plant-derived compounds on mesenchymal stem cells, bone maintenance and regeneration.

Phytoestrogens and other plant-derived compounds and extracts have been developed for the treatment of menopause-related complaints and disorders, e.g. hot flushes and osteoporosis. Since estrogens have been discussed to enhance the risk for hormone-sensitive cancers, research activities try to find alternatives. Phytoestrogens like genistein and resveratrol as well as other plant-derived compounds are capable of substituting for estrogens to some extent. Their effects on mesenchymal stem cells and the tissues derived therefrom have been investigated in vitro and in preclinical settings. Besid

Plant regeneration from single-nodal-stem explants of legume tree Prosopis alba Griseb.

Seeds of Prosopis alba were scarified with abrasive paper and placed to germinate on MS (Murashige and Skoog 1962) nutrient medium. After 7 days of culture, the basal part of cotyledons was removed and pieces of 4 mm" from distal parts were cultured on Murashige and Skoog (1962) mineral salts and vitamins (MS) (3% sucrose) supplemented with growth regulators. Callus proliferation took place in the majority of the media tested. A low percentage of calluses with green buds that developed on MS basal medium containing 0.1 mg.L-1 2,4-D alone or supplemented with BAP at 0.1 mg.L-1 was observed. Nei

Antigenic activity of nonpollen parts (leaves and stems) of allergenic plants (Parietaria judaica and Dactylis glomerata).

In patients with respiratory allergy to pollen it is common to correlate the onset, duration and intensity of clinical symptoms with the count of atmospheric allergenic pollen grains. Pollen counts, however, may not reflect the total airborne allergen exposure since previous data suggest that pollen allergens may also be carried in microaerosol suspensions. These microdroplets may penetrate deeply into the airways, where pollen grains are too large to penetrate, eventually inducing asthma. The origin of these allergenic aerosols is still uncertain. We investigated whether antigenic activity is

Comprehensive Analyses of Nitric Oxide-Induced Plant Stem Cell-Related Genes in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Plant stem cells are pluripotent cells that have diverse applications in regenerative biology and medicine. However, their roles in plant growth and disease resistance are often overlooked. Using high-throughput RNA-seq data, we identified approximately 20 stem cell-related differentially expressed genes (DEGs) that were responsive to the nitric oxide (NO) donor S-nitrosocysteine (CySNO) after six hours of infiltration. Among these DEGs, the highest number of positive correlations (R ≥ 0.8) was observed for CLAVATA3/EMBRYO SURROUNDING REGION-RELATED (CLE) 12. Gene ontology (GO) terms for molec

Expressing OsMPK4 Impairs Plant Growth but Enhances the Resistance of Rice to the Striped Stem Borer Chilo suppressalis.

Mitogen-activated protein kinases (MPKs) play a central role not only in plant growth and development, but also in plant responses to abiotic and biotic stresses, including pathogens. Yet, their role in herbivore-induced plant defenses and their underlying mechanisms remain largely unknown. Here, we cloned a rice MPK gene, OsMPK4, whose expression was induced by mechanical wounding, infestation of the striped stem borer (SSB) Chilo suppressalis, and treatment with jasmonic acid (JA), but not by treatment with salicylic acid (SA). The overexpression of OsMPK4 (oe-MPK4) enhanced constitutive and
