Strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa Duch.) is an important crop in the world. Environmental fluctuations have a significant impact on the growth of strawberries. Photoconversion films can change the environment of facility crops to increase production and improve quality. Therefore, this study investigated the effects of rare earth light conversion films (RPOs) on strawberry cultivation. The temperature, photosynthetic photon flux density, light transmittance and proportion of spectra beneficial to the crop production of RPO greenhouses were all greater than those of the control. Compared with tho

Plant architecture determines grain production in rice (Oryza sativa) and is affected by important agronomic traits such as tillering, plant height, and panicle morphology. Many key genes involved in controlling the initiation and outgrowth of axillary buds, the elongation of stems, and the architecture of inflorescences have been isolated and analyzed. Previous studies have shown that SiPf40, which was identified from a foxtail millet (Setaria italica) immature seed cDNA library, causes extra branches and tillers in SiPf40-transgenic tobacco and foxtail millet, respectively. To reconfirm its

A green fluorescent protein (GFP)-tagged isolate of Verticillium dahliae was used to study its colonization in potato plants and tubers. Three-week-old potato plants of the highly susceptible cultivar 'Shepody' were inoculated with a conidial suspension of a GFP-tagged isolate of V. dahliae using a wound inoculation method. Colonization was studied using confocal microscopy combined with tissue sections. Conidia germinated and hyphae grew along the root hairs, elongation zones, and root caps between 24 and 96 h postinoculation (HPI). At 7 days postinoculation (DPI), the pathogen advanced to co

Plant interactions significantly influence individual growth, with competition for resources being a key factor. However, it's still unclear if neighboring species affect the anatomical development of aquatic plants. This 60-day factorial experiment investigated the anatomical responses of three Pantanal macrophytes: the non-native Urochloa arrecta and native species Ipomoea carnea and Polygonum ferrugineum, grown alone and with neighbors. After the experiment, plants were analyzed anatomically using standard techniques, Image J, and a two-way ANOVA. Results showed that neighboring I. carnea a

The stem of Dendrobium nobile Lindl. (Orchidaceae), called "Shihu" in traditional Chinese medicine, is a well-known medicinal and edible plant material in China. It is used as an antipyretic, analgesic, and tonic to nourish the stomach and Yin (i.e., to improve the production of body fluids). These therapeutic properties are attributed to its alkaloids, sesquiterpenoids, bibenzyls, fluorenones, and phenanthrenes. However, a comprehensive understanding of these metabolites and their spatial distribution in stems is lacking. In this study, ultra-performance liquid chromatography/quadrupole time-

BACKGROUND: Burkholderia pseudomallei is the causative agent for melioidosis, a disease with significant mortality and morbidity in endemic regions. Its versatility as a pathogen is reflected in its relatively huge 7.24 Mb genome and the presence of many virulence factors including three Type Three Secretion Systems known as T3SS1, T3SS2 and T3SS3. Besides being a human pathogen, it is able to infect and cause disease in many different animals and alternative hosts such as C. elegans.
RESULTS: Its host range is further extended to include plants as we demonstrated the ability of B. pseudomall

Early-stage lesions of Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) are composed of single-layered, highly flattened cells lining collagen bundles, whereas late-stage lesions contain densely packed, spindle-shaped cells. We examined the progression of KS lesions in oral mucosa and lymph nodes from patients with AIDS, using antibodies specific for blood vascular endothelial cells (Factor VIII-related antigen) and their basement membrane (Type IV collagen and laminin). In addition, the plant lectin Ulex europaeus, which selectively stains blood vessels, was also used. In early-stage KS lesions, fibronectin, laminin an

Plants respond to mechanical wounding or herbivore attack with a complex scenario of sequential, antagonistic or synergistic action of different signals leading to defense gene expression. Tomato plants were used as a model system since the peptide systemin and the lipid-derived jasmonic acid (JA) were recognized as essential signals in wound-induced gene expression. In this review recent data are discussed with emphasis on wound-signaling in tomato. The following aspects are covered: (i) systemin signaling, (ii) JA biosynthesis and action, (iii) orchestration of various signals such as JA, H2

Coptis chinensis Franch. is one of the most important medicinal plants globally. However, this species contains relatively high concentrations of chromium (Cr) which potentially detrimental to human health. It is important to understand Cr localization and speciation in order to evaluate its accumulation and transportation mechanisms and minimize Cr transfer to humans. As little previous work in this area has been carried out, we utilized synchrotron radiation microscopic X-ray fluorescence (SR-μXRF) and laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (LA-ICP-MS) to spatially locat

Abscisic acid (ABA) was first identified in plants over six decades ago and is now recognized as one of the central phytohormones in plants, regulating growth, development, and physiological adaptation to environmental changes. In this Centennial Update, we use two influential ABA-related articles published in Plant Physiology in the early 2000s and discuss complementary advances in stress-responsive transcription and ABA biosynthetic regulation. We extend the Update from ABA-relevant gene discovery to recent advances in multicellular coordination of stomatal control. Growing evidence supports

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are endogenous small RNAs that repress target gene expression posttranscriptionally, and are critically involved in various developmental processes and responses to environmental stresses in eukaryotes. MiRNA857 is not widely distributed in plants and is encoded by a single gene, AtMIR857, in Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis thaliana). The functions of miR857 and its mechanisms in regulating plant growth and development are still unclear. Here, by means of genetic analysis coupled with cytological studies, we investigated the expression pattern and regulation mechanism of miR857 and

Anatomical injury of the leaves of the invasive species, Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop., caused by the eriophyid mite Aceria anthocoptes (Nal.), which is the only eriophyid mite that has been recorded on C. arvense worldwide, is described. The injury induced by the mite feeding on the leaves of C. arvense results in visible russeting and bronzing of the leaves. Other conspicuous deformations are folding and distortion of the leaf blade and curling of leaf edge, as well as gradual drying of leaves. The anatomical injury of the mature leaves of field-collected plants was limited to the epidermis of

There has been much interest in the incorporation of organic molecules or biostimulants into foliar fertilizers with the rationalization that these compounds will enhance the uptake, or subsequent mobility of the applied nutrient. The objective of this research was to investigate the effects of an inositol-based plant stimulant on the mobility and accumulation of foliar-applied zinc (Zn) in wheat plants (Triticum aestivum L.). High-resolution elemental imaging with micro-X-ray fluorescence (μ-XRF) was utilized to examine Zn distribution within the vascular bundle of the leaf and whole grains.

BACKGROUND: Short internodes contribute to plant dwarfism, which is exceedingly beneficial for crop production. However, the underlying mechanisms of internode elongation are complicated and have been not fully understood.
RESULTS: Here, we report a maize dwarf mutant, dwarf2014 (d2014), which displays shortened lower internodes. Map-based cloning revealed that the d2014 gene is a novel br2 allele with a splicing variation, resulting in a higher expression of BR2-T02 instead of normal BR2-T01. Then, we found that the internode elongation in d2014/br2 exhibited a pattern of inhibition-normalit

Contaminated mining sites require ecological restoration work, of which phytoremediation using appropriate plant species is an attractive option. Our present study is focused on one typical contaminated mine site with indigenous plant cover. The X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) analysis indicated that Cu (the major contaminant) was primarily associated with goethite (adsorbed fraction), with a small amount of Cu oxalate-like species (organic fraction) in mine affected soil. With growth of plant species like Miscanthus floridulus and Stenoloma chusanum, the Cu-oxalate like organic s

In the present study, Trichoderma atroviride TRS25 is presented as a biological control agent, which significantly limits the development of infection and reduces the disease caused by the pathogenic fungus Rhizoctonia solani in cucumber plants (Cucumis sativus L.). The systemic disease suppression is related to oxidative, signaling, and biochemical changes, that are triggered in response to a pathogen. Induction of systemic defense in cucumber by TRS25 greatly depends on the accumulation of signaling molecules including hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and nitric oxide (NO) as well as salicylic acid

Vascular plants are able to conduct biomineralization processes and collect synthesized compounds in their internal tissues or to deposit them on their epidermal surfaces. This mechanism protects the plant from fluctuations of nutrient levels caused by different levels of supply and demand for them. The biominerals reflect both the metabolic characteristics of a vascular plant species and the environmental conditions of the plant habitat. The SEM/EDX method was used to examine the surface and cross-sections of the Calamagrostis epigejos and Phragmites australis leaves from post-industrial habi
