The findings is computed tomography (CT) and other radiological examinations in nine histologically proven cases of intracranial pearly tumors are presented. The CT findings include a low density lesion with no enhancement after contrast medium injection and in some cases a lesser degree of mass effect than would be expected from the size and site of such lesions. Pneumoencephalography is superior to CT in detecting suprasellar pearly tumors when they are isodense with the cerebrospinal fluid.

In two cases where computed tomography (CT) and cerebral angiography failed to determine whether an arteriovenous malformation was within or directly adjacent to the atrium of a lateral ventricle, lateral decubitus pneumoencephalography combined with cerebral angiography successfully localized the lesions. The conductance to outflow of CSF (Cout) was measured in 66 patients with normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH). All patients were investigated with computed tomography (CT); 34 of the patients also had pneumoencephalography (PEG). Periventricular hypodensity on CT indicates a low Cout. Cortical sulci smaller than 1.9 mm on CT indicate a low Cout, while wide cortical sulci do not exclude a low Cout. There was a good correlation between ventricular size on CT and PEG, but the ventricular size is unrelated to Cout. No findings on PEG indicate a low Cout.

The mode of anaesthesia used during pneumoencephalography has a significant effect on the size of the cerebral ventricles 24 hours after the procedure. Post-encephalographic ventricular enlargement is less marked in patients examined under nitrous oxide anaesthesia. This appears to be related to passage of the gas into the ventricles during the encephalogram, and subsequent diffusion outwards.
