[Popliteal cyst with venous compression].

Baker's cysts can produce pressure on draining lymphatics and veins in the knee, producing oedema of the lower leg. These cysts are often mistakenly treated as deep vein thrombosis.

Arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cyst.

OBJECTIVE: To review the results of arthroscopic treatment of popliteal cysts in our centre and analyse outcomes including complications. DESIGN: Retrospective study. SETTING: University teaching hospital, Hong Kong. PATIENTS: From July 2007 to July 2009, 11 patients with symptomatic popliteal cysts were treated arthroscopically. All of them had preoperative magnetic resonance imaging to confirm the diagnosis, identify the valvular opening, and the associated intra-articular pathology. We used the Rauschning and Lindgren criteria for evaluation. RESULTS: Intra-articular pathology like cart…

Popliteal cyst: a surgical approach.

Twenty-nine adult patients (30 knees) who failed conservative treatment had surgical excision of a non-rheumatoid cyst. To determine the effectiveness of this surgical procedure, we reviewed the cases of 24 patients (25 knees) who were available for subjective and objective follow up. Twenty of the 25 knees (80%) were rated excellent or good. Three knees had fair results. Two knees continued to have problems and ultimately underwent total knee replacement for degenerative arthritis.

Popliteal artery pseudoaneurysm after arthroscopic cystectomy of a popliteal cyst.

A case of popliteal artery aneurysm after arthroscopic cystectomy of a popliteal cyst is an uncommon complication, and no case has been reported. We present a case of pseudoaneurysm of the popliteal artery after arthroscopic cystectomy of a popliteal cyst 2 months after surgery. Open excision of the pseudoaneurysm and popliteal artery pin-point repair were done. At 30 months' follow-up, both the tibialis posterior and dorsalis pedis pulsations were felt equally on both sides with normal sensations over the limb. Retrospectively reviewing the case, we found that the relation of the popliteal ar…

[Popliteal vein entrapment, popliteal cyst, desmoid tumor and fabella syndrome].

The popliteal fossa is a relatively small, muscle-bound strategic anatomical area where is found, on the posterior aspect of the knee, a vasculonervous pedicle and where both vascular and pseudovascular disease may develop, the latter originating from wall-constituting parts. Among non-typical popliteal diseases, the authors have singled out four rare syndromes. The popliteal vein may be trapped due to fibrous strangulation or, more often, to compression by the hypertrophied gastrocnemius muscle. This requires proper diagnosis and surgical management prior to thrombosis onset. Synovial cysts r

Exercise-induced popliteal artery compression due to a popliteal fossa cyst.

Nonatherosclerotic extrinsic compression from para-articular cysts is a rare but clinically important cause of claudication. We report the c … cise during duplex ultrasound study of lower limbs to identify rare exercise-induced enlargement of popliteal cysts causing popliteal artery stenosis, which may subsequently require complex multivessel surgical management.

[Diagnosis and therapy of popliteal cyst].

Popliteal cyst is a common peri-knee cyst, also known as a Baker's cyst. With the current development of popliteal cysts, the pathogenesis is mainly due to increased pressure in the knee joint caused by various reasons, leading to a fluid-filled sac that can form behind the knee as a result of enlargement of the gastrocnemius-semimembranosus bursa. The current diagnostic methods include X-ray computed, ultrasound, and magnetic resonance. Among them, magnetic resonance imaging is considered the gold standard for the diagnosis of popliteal cysts. There are various treatments, including conservat…
