Neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. Central corneal endothelial cell density.

We determined central corneal endothelial cell densities in 39 eyes in a masked fashion before and after Q-switched neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. The mean preoperative endothelial cell count was 1,840 cells per square millimeter (SD, 611 cells per square millimeter; range, 522 to 2,742 cells per square millimeter). The mean postoperative endothelial cell count was 1,798 cells per square millimeter (SD, 600 cells per square millimeter; range, 478 to 2,750 cells per square millimeter). The difference between the mean preoperative and postoperative cell density was 42 cells per squar…

Refractive Changes Following Premature Posterior Capsulotomy Using Neodymium:Yttrium-Aluminum-Garnet Laser.

We aimed to determine the timing of neodymium:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Nd:YAG) laser capsulotomy on corrected-distance visual acuity (CDVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), and spherical equivalent (SE) in patients with posterior capsular opacification (PCO). There were 59 patients with unilateral PCO and a history of Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy enrolled and further divided into the early Nd:YAG group (timing < 12 months, n = 25) and late Nd:YAG group (timing > 12 months, n = 34) depending on the elapsed months from phacoemulsification to Nd:YAG laser capsulotomy. The primary outcomes were CDVA, IOP,

Rotation of a toric intraocular lens from neodymium:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

A 77-year-old man had cataract surgery in the left eye in March 2017. A toric intraocular lens (IOL) was implanted because of astigmatism. The postoperative meridian of the IOL was located nearly exactly in the planned meridian, which was controlled 1 week later with ray-tracing aberrometry (iTrace) and the smartphone application Axis Assistant. The referring ophthalmologist proceeded directly with a neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy in his own office, after which the meridian of the implanted toric IOL was rotated more than 115 degrees. The rotation of the IOL was likely the …

Hamstring release and posterior capsulotomy for fixed knee flexion contracture in haemophiliacs.

Between 1977 and 1981 hamstring release (n = 27) and posterior capsulotomy (n = 22) were performed on 27 haemophilic patients. The follow-up of 19 patients is documented for at least 5 years after the operation. The mean age was 30 years (15-40 years), the mean follow-up period was 12.5 years (5-20 years). Postoperatively 16 of 19 knee joints achieved immediate full extension, three patients showed 10 degrees extension deficiency. In the long run the original good result could be demonstrated in just 11 patients. Using the Orthopedic Advisory Committee of the World Federation of Hemophilia (OA…

Acute angle-closure glaucoma caused by vitreous prolapse after neodymium:YAG posterior capsulotomy.

We report the second known case of acute angle-closure glaucoma from vitreous prolapse after neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy in a patient with a posterior chamber intraocular lens (IOL). This is the first reported case to result in corneal decompensation that required penetrating keratoplasty. The rare complication of vitreous prolapse was unusual in this patient because of the presence of a posterior chamber IOL, a small 4.0 mm capsulotomy opening, and low (26 mJ) Nd:YAG laser energy.

Late-onset elevation in intraocular pressure after neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

We retrospectively studied the long-term change in intraocular pressure after neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. Uncomplicated extracapsular cataract extraction with posterior chamber intraocular lens implantation was performed in 446 consecutive normal eyes (401 patients), 237 (53%) of which subsequently underwent uncomplicated neodymium-YAG laser posterior capsulotomy. Late-onset elevation in intraocular pressure was seen in three eyes (1.4%) after cataract surgery alone (mean follow-up, 2.7 +/- 1.7 years) and in 14 eyes (5.9%) after cataract and laser surgeries (mean follow-up, 3.0 …

Late onset of acute angle-closure glaucoma following neodymium:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy.

Acute angle-closure glaucoma due to vitreous prolapse immediately following neodymium:YAG (Nd:YAG) laser posterior capsulotomy in eyes with posterior chamber intraocular lens implants is rare. Previously described cases were associated with advanced age, excessive amounts of laser energy, and a large-diameter capsular opening. The authors describe a case of acute angle-closure glaucoma occurring 21 days after Nd:YAG laser posterior capsulotomy in a young patient with a small-diameter capsule opening and a small amount of laser energy to stress the importance of close extended follow-up even in…

Neodymium: YAG laser posterior capsulotomy: visual acuity outcome and intraocular pressure elevation.

A Q-switched neodymium: YAG laser was used to perform 67 posterior capsulotomies in 67 patients. A clear visual axis was produced in all the eyes. The visual acuity improved by one or more Snellen lines in 90% of the eyes, and the final visual acuity was 20/40 (6/12) or better in 78% of the eyes. Cystoid macular edema developed in two patients after capsulotomy. Increases in intraocular pressure were most prevalent in the early postoperative period. No significant correlation was found between the acute pressure rise and the laser energy used, a previous history of glaucoma or the presence of
