Propionibacterium acnes resistance: a worldwide problem.

Antibiotic therapy directed against Propionibacterium acnes has been a mainstay of treatment for more than 40 years. Despite years of widespread use of systemic tetracyclines and erythromycin, change in P. acnes sensitivity to antibiotics was not seen until the early 1980s. The first clinically relevant changes in P. acnes antibiotic sensitivity were found in the USA shortly after the introduction of topical formulations of erythromycin and clindamycin. By the late 1980s, P. acnes strains with very high MIC levels for erythromycin and elevated MICs for tetracycline were increasingly found in t

Propionibacterium acnes and antimicrobial resistance in acne.

The human commensal bacterium Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) resides in the pilosebaceous duct of the skin. It has been long implicated in the pathogenesis of acne, although its exact role in the development of inflammatory acne lesions and in the formation of the microcomedo in the early stages of acne remains controversial. The worldwide prevalence of antibiotic-resistant P. acnes is increasing, with rates varying in different parts of the world. The reason for the difference in the antibiotic resistance patterns of P. acnes among different countries is not clear, although it may be attr

The Incidence of Propionibacterium acnes in Shoulder Arthroscopy.

PURPOSE: To document the skin colonization and deep tissue inoculation rates associated with arthroscopic shoulder surgery and how these rates differ with procedural and demographic factors. METHODS: We prospectively recruited outpatient shoulder arthroscopy patients who agreed to participate and met the inclusion criteria from February 2013 to May 2014. All patients received routine antibiotic prophylaxis intravenously. Initial cultures were obtained before the skin preparation by swabbing the skin at the 3 standard portal sites: posterior, anterosuperior, and anterolateral. The skin prepara

A psoas abscess caused by Propionibacterium propionicum.

Pelvic actinomycosis-like disease due to Propionibacterium propionicum has been very rare and only a few cases have been reported in the literature. We herein report a probable first case of a psoas abscess caused by P. propionicum. Since P. propionicum is indistinguishable from Actinomyces israelii by morphological features or routine biochemical tests, 16S rRNA gene sequencing was useful to discriminate these two species in this case.

The flexible gene pool of Propionibacterium acnes.

Propionibacterium acnes is a Gram-positive bacterium that is intimately associated with humans. The nature and consequences of this symbiosis are poorly understood; it might comprise both mutualistic and parasitic properties. Recent advances in distinguishing phylotypes of P. acnes have revealed that certain type I lineages are predominantly associated with acne vulgaris. Genome analyses revealed a highly conserved core genome and the existence of island-like genomic regions and possible mobile genetic elements as part of the flexible gene pool. The analysis of clustered regularly interspaced

The prevalence and pathogenicity of Propionibacterium acnes keratitis.

PURPOSE: To study the prevalence, pathogenicity, and virulence of Propionibacterium acnes keratitis. METHODS: All cases of infectious keratitis submitted to the microbiologic laboratory of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary between January 1, 2003, and April 6, 2006, were reviewed. Those cases in which P. acnes was recovered from culture were collected, and the medical records studied in depth. RESULTS: Of 1555 cultures submitted to the microbiology laboratory, 1329 (85.5%) were positive for growth. One hundred twenty four (9.3%) of the 1329 cases yielded P. acnes in at least 1 culture mediu

Propionibacterium (Cutibacterium) granulosum Extracellular DNase BmdE Targeting Propionibacterium (Cutibacterium) acnes Biofilm Matrix, a Novel Inter-Species Competition Mechanism.

Acne vulgaris is the most common dermatological disorder worldwide affecting more than 80% of adolescents and young adults with a global prevalence of 231 million cases in 2019. The involvement of the skin microbiome disbalance in the pathophysiology of acne is recognized, especially regarding the relative abundance and diversity of Propionibacterium acnes a well-known dominant human skin commensal. Biofilms, where bacteria are embedded into a protective polymeric extracellular matrix, are the most prevalent life style for microorganisms. P. acnes and its biofilm-forming ability is believed to

No link between rosacea and Propionibacterium acnes.

Rosacea is a common skin disease in adults affecting mainly the facial skin. Although inflammation appears to play a pathogenic role in rosacea, initiating factors are largely unknown. Microbial involvement in the development of rosacea has been suggested previously. We aimed to visualize Propionibacterium acnes in the skin compartments of rosacea patients. Facial skin biopsies from 82 rosacea patients and 25 controls were stained with a P. acnes-specific monoclonal antibody (QUBPa3). Seven of 82 patients (8.5%) tested positive for P. acnes which was present either as a biofilm (57% of positiv

Pacemaker infection with propionibacterium and a nephritic sediment.

Like any other implanted foreign body, the different parts of pacemakers (pulse generator pocket, epicardial or transvenous leads) can become infected. Staphylococcus aureus and coagulase-negative staphylococci are the causative organisms in most of the cases (65 â 75%), propionibacterium is described to be involved in only 1% of cases. This report describes a case of nephritic sediment in a young female patient with a pacemaker implantation 9 years ago because of a third degree atrioventricular block, in which a battery exchange was necessary 2.5 years ago. This young patient was referred fro

Propionibacterium propionicum and infections of the lacrimal apparatus.

Analysis of the clinical details associated with 26 referred isolates of Propionibacterium propionicum revealed the marked propensity of this anaerobe to be involved with infections of the lacrimal apparatus; 18 (69%) of the 26 referred isolates were from cases of canaliculitis in which this organism was regarded as the significant pathogen. Further analysis of data showed a significant correlation with the sex of the patient. Of the 18 cases of canaliculitis, the sex of the patient was reported in 16; 14 (88%) of these 16 patients were females (P < .005). The age of 13 of the 18 patients with

Infected aortic stent graft with Propionibacterium acnes.

An infected aortic endograft is an uncommon event, and when it happens it can be of significant morbidity and mortality to the patient. We present here a case of a patient with an infected aortic endograft following percutaneous translumbar sac embolization for a type II endoleak leading to sac expansion. The cultured pathogen was Propionibacterium acnes, a commonly occurring skin bacterium that leads to the clinical condition "acne vulgaris." The patient underwent graft explantation and reconstruction with autogenous femoral vein. To our knowledge, there are no previously published reports of

Etiologic link between sarcoidosis and Propionibacterium acnes.

Propionibacterium acnes is the only microorganism isolated from sarcoid lesions by bacterial culture. Numerous P. acnes genomes are found in lymph node samples from Japanese and European patients with sarcoidosis, whereas a few genomes are found in some non-sarcoid samples. The high frequency and specificity of detecting P. acnes within sarcoid granulomas suggests that this indigenous bacterium causes granuloma formation in many patients with sarcoidosis. P. acnes is the most common commensal bacterium in the lungs and lymph nodes. Occasional detection of P. acnes in non-granulomatous areas of

Granulomatous Propionibacterium acnes infection after trauma surgery.

We report here a rare case of infection caused by Propionibacterium acnes following trauma surgery: a 36-year-old male, accident victim was admitted to the hospital because of polytrauma. He underwent a long-drawn-out surgical intervention and after a free-muscle transfer using the rectus femoris muscle, signs of inflammation were detected in the affected area. Microbiological examination of the wound revealed the presence of P. acnes as the only etiological agent of this infection. Adequate antibiotic treatment with penicillin had been started right after the positive microbiological result.

Propionibacterium acnes contamination in lumbar disc surgery.

Previous studies have shown that Propionibacterium acnes may be responsible for low-grade infection of the intervertebral discs of patients with severe sciatica. The aim of this study was to prospectively investigate the presence of bacteria in disc fragment samples obtained during surgery for lumbar disc herniation. P. acnes was cultured from disc fragments in two (3.7%) of 54 patients studied. In addition, control cultures taken from ligamentum flavum and muscle from these two patients were also positive for P. acnes. Similar control cultures were positive for P. acnes from a further ten (18

Chronic postoperative endophthalmitis caused by Propionibacterium acnes.

Persistent intraocular inflammation after cataract surgery with intraocular lens implantation is acquiring importance. Frequently, chronic uveitis or the "toxic lens syndrome" have to be differentiated from bacterial infection. This report describes five cases with chronic postoperative endophthalmitis where the anaerobic bacterium Propionibacterium acnes was found to be the causative organism. Adequate anaerobic culture media and proper sampling from the area around the lens haptics are the most important requirements for the detection of P. acnes.
