Psychedelics and Psychotherapy.

Psychedelics have shown great promise in modern clinical trials for treating various psychiatric conditions. As a transdiagnostic treatment that exerts its effects through subjective experiences that leave enduring effects, it is akin to psychotherapy. To date, there has been insufficient discussion of how psychedelic therapy is similar to and different from conventional psychotherapy. In this article, we review the shared features of effective conventional psychotherapies and situate therapeutic psychedelic effects within those. We then discuss how psychedelic drug effects might amplify conve…

[Psychotherapy of depression].

Patients with depressive disorder are often guilty of their dysfunction and desperate of their future. In acute stage, it is most important to give patients the insight into their illness and to give them such reassurance that they will recover with treatment. Clinicians should advise the patients to take a rest. To encourage and motivate the patients to do work or other activities is often harmful. In the recovery stage, it is useful for the patients to reflect on their premorbid personality and behavioral traits that facilitate the development of depressive disorder, which may lead to their

Psychotherapy of dysthymia.

OBJECTIVE: The author reviews empirical research on the psychotherapy of dysthymia. Dysthymia, a prevalent mood disorder, has been shown frequently to respond to antidepressant medication. The need for a treatment for dysthymic subjects unable or unwilling to take, or unresponsive to, medication still remains. METHODS: Studies were located by computerized search and the author's knowledge of the literature. All reports of studies on psychotherapy outcome for dysthymic patients, except studies of late-life chronic major depression, were included. RESULTS: Psychotherapy research on dysthymia h…

Utilizing Transference-Focused Psychotherapy Interventions in Group Psychotherapy for Personality Disorders.

Transference-focused psychotherapy (TFP) is a modified form of psychoanalytic psychotherapy grounded in object relations theory. It was developed to treat borderline personality disorder but has been used with a broader range of personality pathology. Notable adaptations include establishing an explicit treatment contract; a grounding in the domains of work, intimacy, and creativity rather than strict free association; a more formalized structure for training and supervising therapists; and a staged approach to interpretation that focuses sequentially on the elucidation of dominant object rela…

Integrating psychotherapy and psychopharmacology: psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy and other combined treatments.

INTRODUCTION: Combinations of psychotherapy with antidepressants are gold-standard psychiatric treatments. They operate through complex and interactional mechanisms, not unlike the reemergent paradigm of psychedelic-assisted psychotherapy, which promising research suggests may also be highly effective in even challenging populations. AREAS COVERED: We review the therapeutic mechanisms behind both conventional and psychedelic paradigms, including the evolution of this knowledge and the associated explanatory frameworks. We explore how psychedelics have provided insights about psychiatric illne…

12-hour psychotherapy.

The two cases cited illustrate how short-term therapy can be used to meet a patient's needs to deal with loss and grief. Although the goals as set out in short-term therapy contracts are not always fully achieved, this treatment modality, as delineated by Mann, is valuable to psychiatry. Short-term therapy is not only a sound therapeutic intervention, but also a means of bringing psychiatric health care to a greater segment of the population.

The relation of baseline skills to psychotherapy outcome across diverse psychotherapies.

OBJECTIVE: We explored whether patients with varied levels of baseline deficits in compensatory skills and self-understanding had different outcomes across cognitive and dynamic therapies. METHOD: The assessment battery was administered at intake and termination (N = 97; 66% female, 81% Caucasian). We conducted regression analyses predicting symptom change from baseline levels of self-understanding and compensatory skills. We also evaluated the interaction between baseline skill levels and treatment condition in the prediction of psychotherapy outcome. RESULTS: There was a significant intera…

Psychotherapy readiness domains as predictors of psychotherapy outcome in trauma-affected refugees.

INTRODUCTION: Little is known about predictors of psychotherapy outcome in trauma-affected refugees. Knowledge on outcome predictors can help clinicians identify patients prior to treatment who are not likely to benefit from standardized psychotherapy and take additional measures to adjust treatment to the individual patient. Given the dynamic nature of psychotherapy readiness domains, they represent potential targets to be worked with in therapy in order to improve outcomes. METHODS: Psychotherapy readiness domains (locus of control, cognitive functioning, motivation for therapy, and persona…

[Several aspects of the psychotherapy of neuroses (value of so-called rational psychotherapy)].

The authors consider neurosis as a disturbed ability of an adequate perception and reaction which must be corrected by the use of psychotherapy. The method of the socalled rational deep psychotherapy is taken as the main therapeutical influence. Other methods and measures are used in the complex with this method. The possibility of a patient's logical judgement in the use of the methods of suggestive therapy is pointed out. The new methods of psychotherapeutical influence are stated.
