Agoraphobia is a complex disorder characterized by substantial personal, social, and occupational disability. This paper presents a cognitive-behavioral model of group psychotherapy for agoraphobia treatment wherein group members are taught active coping skills to reduce anxiety and behavioral avoidance. Therapy occurs in the context of a supportive group, which aids in reducing the social isolation and alienation attendant on this severe anxiety disorder. The model of treatment is amenable to both time-limited and open-ended group therapy formats.

When the therapeutic alliance between physician or psychotherapist, and epileptic patient is seriously disrupted (non-compliance) group psychotherapy is capable of bringing about marked changes in coping with the epileptic condition. Even a brief therapy of 20 sessions with epileptic young people undergoing initial vocational training contributes to their learning to perceive problems present in their vocational-social development, as well as various disease phenomena and therapeutic possibilities. Eight young adults aged 18-20 years who had been referred to the Annedore Leber Vocational Train

OBJECTIVE: Depression is highly prevalent in Lebanon, but the number of mental health specialists is limited; alternative interventions that increase access are needed. The authors evaluated the feasibility of group interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT-G) delivered in primary health care settings as part of national efforts to expand community-based services to address depression.
METHODS: The authors conducted an open-label, mixed-methods feasibility trial in Lebanon. Fourteen providers completed IPT-G training and supervision by certified trainers to offer a nine-session IPT-G treatment using t

Increase in substance abuse and addictive disorders is one of the most significant and urgent problems in contemporary society, especially among young women of childbearing age, thus affecting the health of future generations. This study assessed the effectiveness of group psychotherapy in rehabilitation of female opium addicts. Our findings suggest that women respond best to short-term group psychotherapy consisting of women only as compared to participation in co-ed groups. At follow-up, there was significant change in desire for opiates and abstinence in the study group.

OBJECTIVE: Group psychotherapy is a widely used form of treatment for bulimia nervosa, and many open and controlled studies have demonstrated that it is relatively effective. However, it is not clear what factors enhance or reduce that effectiveness. This review considers the potential role of a number of such factors.
METHOD: The literature on the effectiveness of group psychotherapy was selected on the basis of its publication inclusion in peer-reviewed journals. Unpublished material was not included. Factors considered included theoretical orientation, therapy dose, concurrent treatment, c

A reanalysis of treatment response and relapse was performed using survival analysis in a 12-week clinical trial of cognitive behavioral group psychotherapy for the treatment of bulimia nervosa. One hundred forty-three (143) bulimic women with high incidence of binge eating, self-induced vomiting, and/or laxative abuse were randomly assigned to one of four possible treatment conditions that consisted of a combination of two factors: (1) emphasis on abstinence (high and low), and (2) treatment intensity (high and low). "Initial" and "maintained" response to treatment based on "total" and "near"

This study examined relational group psychotherapy processes, including group cohesion, bond with group leaders, perceptions of shame, and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) symptomatology for sexual trauma survivors. Six separate treatment groups of women who were either adult sexual assault survivors (N = 24) or adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse (N = 9) participated in the study. Participants completed the Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5 (PCL-5) pre- and posttreatment, the Group Climate Questionnaire, Bond scale of the Working Alliance Inventory Short Form (WAI-S)

OBJECTIVES: Premature Ejaculation (PE), the commonest sexual dysfunction in males, is generally treated with local anesthetic and SSRI (Dapoxetine). The aim of our study was investigate Group Psychotherapy as an alternative treatment for PE and compare the efficacy of pharmacological treatment and psychotherapy, either alone or in combination, in terms of response and improved Quality of Life (QoL). From a male outpatient population screened for PE, those who received a diagnosis of PE were proposed for the study, enrolled and divided into 3 groups (A, B and C). Each group was treated with Dap

Dual relationships in the training and treatment of group therapists are inherent and endemic to the profession of psychoanalytic group therapy. Independently of theoretical orientation at many training institutes, senior group leaders double as training group analysts, teachers, supervisors, administrators, friends, and sometimes even relatives of group trainees. Further, these trainees are often in the same treatment groups, supervision groups, and classes with each other and may also be friends and relatives. These complicated relationships often blur the boundaries between therapy and not

We used a randomized clinical trial to investigate the interaction of two patient personality characteristics (quality of object relations [QOR] and psychological mindedness [PM]) with two forms of time-limited, short-term group therapy (interpretive and supportive) for 139 psychiatric outpatients with complicated grief. Findings differed depending on the outcome variable (e.g., grief symptoms, general symptoms) and the statistical criterion (e.g., statistical significance, clinical significance, magnitude of effect). Patients in both therapies improved. For grief symptoms, a significant inter

Group psychotherapy represents a therapeutic modality that provides unique affordances for patients, allowing layers of engagement by the patient in the psychotherapeutic process that are not available in dyadic psychotherapeutic treatment. This article considers psychodynamic group psychotherapy through the lens of current neuroscientific concepts. In doing so, we offer a framework for clinicians to consider how beliefs and habits that are originally adaptive become maladaptive and persist, and why patients hold on to maladaptive beliefs about the world and their own agency that are not refle

Patients with borderline personality disorders (BPD) have great difficulties with interpersonal relations. Their extreme difficulties with interpersonal relations are illustrated in psychic family interaction. Parents become the recipients of conflicts and patient's aggressive behaviour, while family stress increases due to suicidal tendency, self-injuries and substance abuse. The current report presents the introduction of group psychotherapy for parents of young adult patients with BPD, treated in a special unit of personality disorders at Eginition Hospital. The aim is, through the parallel

Although much of the psychotherapy for psychiatric disorders is conducted on a weekly basis, several researchers in the field of bulimia nervosa have utilized a more intensive approach as a means to strengthen treatment effects. A second issue concerns the amount of emphasis that should be placed on encouraging the interruption of bulimic symptoms early in treatment. In the current study we systematically studied these two issues. Subjects were randomly assigned to one of four forms of cognitive-behavioral group psychotherapy, the four cells differing on the variables of intensity and emphasis

We present the development and preliminary psychometric evaluation of the Group Rupture Resolution Rating System (G-3RS), an observer-based measure of therapeutic alliance ruptures and repairs in group therapy. The G-3RS is a companion to the 3RS, an observer-rating system for ruptures and repairs in individual therapy. The G-3RS incorporates different levels of group interactions: member-, therapist-, and group-initiated ruptures and repairs. Raters coded 62 sessions of 21 Group Psychodynamic Interpersonal Psychotherapy groups for binge eating disorder using the G-3RS. The G-3RS demonstrated

OBJECTIVE: Group-analytic psychotherapy is probably the most commonly used psychodynamic group therapy in Europe. This paper describes focused group analytic psychotherapy (FGAP), a new time-limited version of this therapy, based on clinical experience and research.
THE THERAPY/SUITABILITY OF PATIENTS: It is relatively structured and individually oriented, and designed for patients with a certain ability to tolerate internal and external stress, without decompensating or developing serious behavioral disturbances (they should have a limited degree of personality pathology). Patients entering
