Rabies, rabies vaccine, and renal failure: Clinical issues.

Rabies is an important neurological infection that is prevalent in tropical countries. The rabid animals can bring rabies to humans by biting. The disease can result in serious neurological problem and death is the end result. The best way is prevention of disease by postexposure prophylaxis against rabies. The effect of rabies on the renal system is little mentioned in the literature. In the previous literature, acute kidney injury was observable in half of the rabies patients. Rabies is also transmittable by organ transplantation. Although it is rare and <10 cases had ever been reported in l…

Rabies encephalitis.

Rabies is an almost always fatal disease that physicians and patients dread due to its dismal prognosis and limited treatment options. Transmission of this disease occurs through the bite of dogs and wild animals (like jackal in our case). Other rare forms of transmission may be through inhalation in bat-infested caves and human-to-human transmission by infected corneal transplants, solid organ and tissue transplantation, and sometimes in laboratory settings. Its diagnosis is usually clinical in the absence of availability of special laboratory investigations at the point-of-care facility. Few…

Equine rabies.

With the continued increase in the number of wildlife rabies cases reported across the United States and Canada, this disease will remain a threat to the horse as the potential for exposure to infected wildlife and other domestic animals is likely to also increase. Because there are no rapid, definitive antemortem diagnostic tests, the tentative diagnosis is based upon the variable and sometimes nonspecific clinical signs. Although the CSF analysis may be helpful in some cases, it may not be abnormal. Nor is collection of the specimen always practical in the field situation. The FAT on neural …

Rabies diagnosis and surveillance in animals in the era of rabies elimination.

Effective real-time surveillance, combined with proficient, decentralised and validated laboratory diagnostics, is a prerequisite for successful rabies control and elimination. The selection and prioritisation of surveillance methodologies, in conjunction with appropriate diagnostic techniques, should reflect the goals of the disease control and elimination programme (Stage 1: proof of burden; Stage 2: human rabies prevention; Stage 3: monitoring and assessment of control measures; Stage 4: verification of rabies elimination; and Stage 5: post elimination). The development of minimum surveilla…

Rabies immunization of travelers in a canine rabies endemic area.

BACKGROUND: Travelers to countries where rabies is endemic may be at risk of rabies exposure. We assessed rabies immunization of travelers attending a travel clinic in Thailand. METHODS: The medical charts of international travelers who came for preexposure (PrEP) or postexposure (PEP) rabies prophylaxis at the Queen Saovabha Memorial Institute (QSMI), Bangkok, Thailand between 2001 and 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. RESULTS: A total of 782 travelers, including 188 patients who presented with mammal-associated injuries and possible rabies exposures and 594 persons who came requesting Pr…

Rabies Virus.

This infographic describes the transmission cycle of rabies virus in domestic dogs and the necessity of a One Health approach, integrating medical and veterinary interventions, to control and eliminate human rabies deaths. Rabies virus (RABV) causes an acute, fatal neurological infection in humans and other mammals, transmitted through the saliva of rabid animals via a bite or scratch. From the site of infection the virus travels along neurons to the central nervous system (CNS), where viral replication leads to symptoms and systemic spread. Once symptomatic, the disease is nearly 100% fatal. …
