Trichinella spiralis in road-killed raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in western Poland.

Trichinellosis is still one of the most important food-borne parasitic zoonoses and is considered as a threat to public health worldwide. The aim of this study was to use genotyping techniques to determine the prevalence of Trichinella species in wild raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in western Poland. The infection rate in raccoon dogs was 0.8%. All infections were due to T. spiralis.

The raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) as a reservoir of zoonotic diseases in Denmark.

Raccoon dogs have successfully invaded Europe, including Denmark. Raccoon dogs are potential vectors and reservoir hosts of several zoonotic pathogens and thus have the potential for posing a threat to both human and animal health. This study includes analysis of four zoonotic parasites, 16 tick-borne pathogens and two pathogen groups from 292 raccoon dogs collected from January 2018 to December 2018. The raccoon dogs were received as a part of the Danish national wildlife surveillance program and were hunted, found dead or road killed. The raccoon dogs were screened for Alaria alata and Echin…

On the facial artery of the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus Temminck).

Detailed observations were made of the facial artery in 20 raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus Temminck) utilizing the plastic injection method. The findings obtained were discussed in comparison with the facial artery of carnivorae. The facial artery diverged anterolaterally from the external carotid artery independently at a position between the origins of the lingual and the posterior auricular arteries when the external carotid bent laterally in front of the tympanic bulla. This artery, immediately after giving off the styloglossal branch, passed forwards superomedial to the …

Disseminated nocardiosis in a Japanese raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides viverrinus).

A captive male Japanese raccoon dog died after self-mutilation by biting its tail and developing anorexia. At necropsy, ulceration of the tail root and pelvic region, an abdominal mass, multifocal nodules in the lungs, and thrombi in the heart were observed. Histopathological examinations revealed multifocal pyogranulomatous inflammation in the lungs, abdominal mass, spleen, brain, liver, and kidneys. Gram-positive bacterial aggregates were observed in the lungs, abdominal mass, and spleen. These organisms were partially acid-fast and periodic acid-Schiff-positive, and branching filaments were

Study on the occurrence of Trichinella spp. in raccoon dogs in Brandenburg, Germany.

In recent years the raccoon dog population in Germany has risen dramatically and a steady westward expansion can still be seen. In addition to the highest Trichinella prevalence in wild boar and the most reported Trichinella cases in domestic swine from backyard farms, the North-Eastern part of Germany also has the highest raccoon dog density in the country. Due to their distinct scavenging behavior, raccoon dogs play a significant role as Trichinella reservoir. Therefore, to increase the knowledge on Trichinella spp. in raccoon dogs, we performed a study on the occurrence of Trichinella in th…

Serological survey for antibodies to Leptospira in dogs and raccoons in Washington State.

A high number of reported canine leptospirosis cases occurred in Washington State from 2004 to 2006. This prompted a serosurvey of healthy dogs from around the state to determine the distribution of exposure risk and to provide insight into serovar epidemiology in the region. In addition, a convenience sample of sera from injured raccoons was also tested, and clinical serological data from the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory were examined. The proportion of dogs with an antibody titre (>or=1:100) to any serovar was 27/158 (17.1%, 95% CI 11.6-23.9), and that proportion among rac

Clinical features of experimental trichinellosis in the raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides).

Three groups of six raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) were provided for the experiment: the first group was infected with pig-origin Trichinella spiralis, the second with raccoon dog-origin Trichinella nativa, and the third served as controls. Infection dose for both parasite species was 1000 larvae/kg of body weight, which led to intense final infection. Clinical signs, haematology and serum biochemistry with repeated blood samples were monitored up to 12 weeks post-infection. The most significant findings were a short-term eosinophilia in peripheral blood from the end of the first week…

Listeriosis in a raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) associated with canine distemper.

A wild raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides) that manifested severe illness and died was examined. Necropsy revealed severe emaciation, systemic icterus and petechial hemorrhages on the mucous membranes. Histopathologically, necroses were seen in the liver and brain stem associated with meningitis. Eosinophilic intranuclear inclusion bodies were observed in the spleen and intestinal mucosa, and eosinophilic intracytoplasmic inclusion bodies were seen in transitional epithelium in the bladder. Listeria monocytogenes 4b was isolated from the liver, spleen, kidneys and lungs, and the pathogen wa

Vector-Borne and Zoonotic Pathogens in Raccoon Dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and Raccoons (Procyon lotor) from Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and raccoons (Procyon lotor) are invasive alien species originating from East Asia and North America, respectively. They are discussed as vectors and reservoirs for various infectious diseases, including vector-borne and zoonotic pathogens, and are therefore a potential threat to human and domestic animal health, as well as to biodiversity and conservation. In the years 2021 and 2022, 110 raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and 30 raccoons (Procyon lotor) were screened via qPCR for the presence of Leptospira spp., Rickettsia spp. and Borreliella spp.…

Malicious Mites-Sarcoptes scabiei in Raccoon Dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in Schleswig-Holstein, Germany.

Sarcoptic mange was detected in five free-ranging raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) in the federal state of Schleswig-Holstein, Germany, during a health assessment study of invasive species, including raccoon dogs, carried out between 2021 and 2022. Four raccoon dogs showed severe lesions, including extensive alopecia with thickening and hyperpigmentation of the skin (lichenification). The fifth animal was less affected, showing only thinning of the hair coat in multiple body locations. Skin scrapings were performed and confirmed the presence of Sarcoptes scabiei. Histopathology of the s…

Echinococcus multilocularis in foxes and raccoon dogs: an increasing concern for Baltic countries.

BACKGROUND: In Europe, the life-cycle of Echinococcus multilocularis is predominantly sylvatic, involving red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) as the main definitive hosts and rodents such as muskrats and arvicolids as intermediate hosts. The parasite is the etiological agent of human alveolar echinococcosis, a malignant zoonotic disease caused by the accidental ingestion of eggs shed by definitive hosts in their faeces. The aims of this study were to investigate the prevalence of E. multilocularis in red foxes and raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and to study the environmental factors favouring t…

Safety and immunogenicity of recombinant rabies virus (ERAGS) in mice and raccoon dogs.

PURPOSE: The development of a genetically modified live rabies vaccine applicable to wild raccoon dogs is necessary for the eradication of rabies in Korea. Thus, we constructed a recombinant rabies virus (RABV) called the ERAGS strain, using a reverse genetic system and evaluated its safety and efficacy in mice and its safety and immunogenicity in raccoon dogs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: ERAGS, which has Asn194Ser and Arg333Glu substitutions in the glycoprotein, was constructed using site-directed mutagenesis. Mice were inoculated with the ERAGS strain (either 10(5.0) or 10(7.0) FAID50/mL) via in…

Pathogenesis of canine distemper virus in experimentally infected raccoon dogs, foxes, and minks.

Canine distemper virus (CDV) infects a broad range of carnivores and causes a highly contagious disease with severe immunosuppression. The d … ina. CDV infection provoked marked differences in virulence in the three species that were studied. Raccoon dogs developed fever, severe conjunctivitis, and pathological lesions, with 100% (5/5) mortality and with high viral RNA loads in organs within 15 days post infection (dpi). In infected foxes, the onset of the disease was delayed, with 40% (2/5) mortalit …

First record of Giardia assemblage D infection in farmed raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides).

The presence of Giardia genotypes was investigated in 18 raccoon dogs (Nyctereutes procyonoides) and 80 red foxes (Vulpes vulpes) on one farm. To demonstrate Giardia cysts, fresh and trichrome stained smears were microscopically screened. Two molecular markers were used for Giardia genotyping: a fragment of the beta-giardin gene and a fragment of the glutamate dehydrogenase gene. All faecal samples obtained from red foxes were negative. Giardia cysts were identified only in 2 of the 18 raccoon dogs. The result of genotyping and phylogenetic analysis showed that the G. duodenalis from both racc…
