Metformin-Associated Lactic Acidosis-Is This on Your Radar?

BACKGROUND: Metformin is a biguanide hyperglycemic agent used to manage non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus. Adverse reactions include mainly mild gastrointestinal adverse effects, but severe complications, such as metformin-associated lactic acidosis (MALA) can occur. Metformin is excreted renally and, therefore, not recommended in patients with renal impairment. The reported incidence of MALA is 3 cases per 100,000 patient-years. CASE REPORT: A 79-year-old woman with a complex medical history, including end-stage renal disease on dialysis and type 2 diabetes, presented to the emergency

Multi-Target Radar Speed Meter Failure Mechanism Research.

Multi-target radar speed measuring instruments play a crucial role in monitoring speeding violations of multiple targets in multiple lanes, ensuring the safety, order, and efficient operation of traffic. In order to verify the stability of these instruments under long-term and complex working conditions, accelerated life testing was conducted, and the failure mechanisms of the radar were studied using optical and scanning electron microscopic analysis methods. The results indicated that at a test temperature of 85 °C and humidity of 79% RH, all five speed measuring specimens failed after testi

Key Vital Signs Monitor Based on MIMO Radar.

State-of-the-art radar systems for the contactless monitoring of vital signs and respiratory diseases are typically based on single-channel continuous wave (CW) technology. This technique allows precise measurements of respiration patterns, periods of movement, and heart rate. Major practical problems arise as CW systems suffer from signal cancellation due to destructive interference, limited overall functionality, and a possibility of low signal quality over longer periods. This work introduces a sophisticated multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) solution that captures a radar image to estim

Basic gait analysis based on continuous wave radar.

A gait analysis method based on continuous wave (CW) radar is proposed in this paper. Time-frequency analysis is used to analyze the radar micro-Doppler echo from walking humans, and the relationships between the time-frequency spectrogram and human biological gait are discussed. The methods for extracting the gait parameters from the spectrogram are studied in depth and experiments on more than twenty subjects have been performed to acquire the radar gait data. The gait parameters are calculated and compared. The gait difference between men and women are presented based on the experimental da

Fetal alcohol spectrum disorders: flying under the radar.

Alcohol exposure during pregnancy has been shown to result in a spectrum of birth defects known as Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) that can negatively impact a child's growth, development, cognition, behavior and physical appearance over his or her entire lifespan. FASD is not a diagnostic term, unlike Fetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS), which is the most serious disorder within the spectrum. Despite warnings by the U.S. Surgeon General and others, childbearing age women continue to drink at high levels, even in pregnancy. As there is no cure for an FASD, preventive activities are currently

Babesiosis and blood transfusion: flying under the radar.

Infectious agents of disease continue to plague transfusion medicine as an increasing number of pathogens are described that pose a potential blood safety risk. While the recent focus has been on newly emerged agents, several well-established pathogens provide timely reminders that other agents continue to pose threats, but invariably 'fly under the radar', thereby failing to elicit adequate measures to prevent their transmission by blood transfusion. Perhaps foremost among this group of agents are the Babesia spp., which have been known to cause human disease, in the USA, for close to 40 year

On radar and radio exposure and cancer in the military setting.

INTRODUCTION: In 2018, we reported a case series of 47 patients diagnosed with cancer following several years of exposure to high-intensity whole-body radiofrequency radiation (RFR) using the parameter of percentage frequency (PF). Consistent high and statistically significant PFs of hematolymphoid (HL) cancers were found in this group and in four previous reports on RFR-exposed groups in Belgium, Poland and Israel together with increased all-cancers rates. In this paper we report a new series of 46 young cancer patients who were exposed during military service to such radiation. MATERIALS AN

Non-Invasive Intra-Abdominal Pressure Measurement by Means of Transient Radar Method: In Vitro Validation of a Novel Radar-Based Sensor.

Intra-abdominal hypertension, defined as an intra-abdominal pressure (IAP) equal to or above 12 mmHg is one of the major risk-factors for increased morbidity (organ failure) and mortality in critically ill patients. Therefore, IAP monitoring is highly recommended in intensive care unit (ICU) patients to predict development of abdominal compartment syndrome and to provide a better care for patients hospitalized in the ICU. The IAP measurement through the bladder is the actual reference standard advocated by the abdominal compartment society; however, this measurement technique is cumbersome, no

Micro-Doppler radar deception and camouflage of airborne targets.

Micro-Doppler signatures are ubiquitous in radar-based object recognition and classification, as they contain information about the internal structure of observed targets. While modern machine learning algorithms achieve unprecedented accuracy in target classification, they are susceptible to deceptive manipulation by introducing intelligent artificial modulation to the target's backscattered echoes. Here, we present the required foundations for successful passive deception, demonstrating experimentally the ability to camouflage a drone as a helicopter in the eyes of the investigating radar wh

SCOUT® Radar Localization at Time of Breast Biopsy.

OBJECTIVE: Evaluate surgical utilization of SCOUT reflectors placed at breast biopsy. METHODS: Consent was waived for this retrospective IRB-approved, HIPAA-compliant study. Breast biopsy examinations that reported the term "SCOUT" between January 2021 and June 2022 were identified using an institutional search engine. Cases were included if a SCOUT reflector was placed at time of breast biopsy and excluded if lesion pathology was already known. Analysis was performed at the lesion level. A multivariate-regression analysis evaluated 6 variables with potential impact on SCOUT utilization. RES

Radar Sensor Data Fitting for Accurate Linear Sprint Modelling.

BACKGROUND: Accurate linear sprint modelling is essential for evaluating athletes' performance, particularly in terms of force, power, and velocity capabilities. Radar sensors have emerged as a critical tool in capturing precise velocity data, which is fundamental for generating reliable force-velocity (FV) profiles. This study focuses on the fitting of radar sensor data to various sprint modelling techniques to enhance the accuracy of these profiles. Forty-seven university-level athletes (M = 23, F = 24; 1.75 ± 0.1 m; 79.55 ± 12.64 kg) participated in two 40 m sprint trials, with radar sensor

Ultra-wideband radar to measure in vivo muscle forces.

Accurate measures of muscle forces are critical for engineers, clinicians, and biomechanists, yet direct measurement is highly invasive, and current estimation methods remain limited in accuracy. Here, we demonstrate the application of ultra-wideband radar sensors to noninvasively estimate muscle forces by measuring changes in the electromagnetic properties of contracting muscles, in muscles with different structural properties, during various static and dynamic conditions, and in the presence of fatigue. First, we show that ultra-wideband radar scans of muscle can reliably track isometric for

Scattering center guided mono-static radar cross section prediction.

Radar cross section (RCS) is a fundamental electromagnetic property that characterizes how objects scatter incident radar signals. Recently, learning-based methods have shown great potential in near-field electromagnetic computation and RCS estimation. However, most existing approaches predominantly focus on capturing an object's global structure, often overlooking the impact of fine surface details. Since both global geometry and surface details influence RCS, this limitation hinders accurate modeling. To address this problem, we propose a novel method that incorporates scattering center theo

Radar-aided reconfigurable intelligent surface for vehicular wireless communication.

In the intricate traffic environment of modern cities, challenges like insufficient wireless signal coverage and obstructed propagation links between base stations (BS) and vehicles are prevalent. Meanwhile, reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS) offers what we believe to be a novel solution relying on its robust real-time control over electromagnetic (EM) waves, providing a new approach to achieving intelligent transportation and vehicle connectivity. In this paper, we propose a radar-aided intelligent wireless communication system for dynamic beam tracking. The system leverages frequency-m

PathoSPOT genomic epidemiology reveals under-the-radar nosocomial outbreaks.

BACKGROUND: Whole-genome sequencing (WGS) is increasingly used to map the spread of bacterial and viral pathogens in nosocomial settings. A limiting factor for more widespread adoption of WGS for hospital infection prevention practices is the availability of standardized tools for genomic epidemiology. METHODS: We developed the Pathogen Sequencing Phylogenomic Outbreak Toolkit (PathoSPOT) to automate integration of genomic and medical record data for rapid detection and tracing of nosocomial outbreaks. To demonstrate its capabilities, we applied PathoSPOT to complete genome surveillance data

Hijacking of the Host's Immune Surveillance Radars by Burkholderia pseudomallei.

Burkholderia pseudomallei (B. pseudomallei) causes melioidosis, a potentially fatal disease for which no licensed vaccine is available thus far. The host-pathogen interactions in B. pseudomallei infection largely remain the tip of the iceberg. The pathological manifestations are protean ranging from acute to chronic involving one or more visceral organs leading to septic shock, especially in individuals with underlying conditions similar to COVID-19. Pathogenesis is attributed to the intracellular ability of the bacterium to 'step into' the host cell's cytoplasm from the endocytotic vacuole, w
