[Clinical effects of combined radiation injuries].

The author interprets the formation of exposure factors in a nuclear reactor accident, causes of the formation of a separated mixture of nuclear fission fragments and their principal radionuclide composition. The ratio of doses of whole-body gamma-irradiation resulting in the development of the acute radiation syndrome, beta-irradiation of the skin causing radiation dermatitis, and additional irradiation of thyroid tissue resulting from inhalation radioiodine contamination was analyzed. The author described the main peculiarities of acute radiation disease caused by combined radiation exposure

The psychological effects of ionizing radiation.

This paper presents a case study of eleven men who were exposed to non-background ionizing radiation as active participants in the United States' atmospheric nuclear tests. Each of the subjects has developed a virtually identical complex of debilitating psychiatric symptoms. The content of these symptoms is almost entirely focused upon the health effects of the radiation to which each of the subjects was exposed. This symptom complex appears to comprise a syndrome. The symptom structure and course of this syndrome suggests three hypotheses: The syndrome appears to be a pathological development

Potential Radiation-Related Effects on Radiologists.

OBJECTIVE: The risk of injury associated with long-term occupational exposure to ionizing radiation is low for radiologists. The purpose of this article is to systematically review and inform radiologists about radiation-related effects to which they are potentially susceptible. CONCLUSION: Formal education and training on radiation safety and management, careful attention to good radiation protection habits, and continued emphasis on radiation management and the as low as reasonably achievable principle are recommended for all radiologists.

The effects of radiation on angiogenesis.

The average human body contains tens of thousands of miles of vessels that permeate every tissue down to the microscopic level. This makes the human vasculature a prime target for an agent like radiation that originates from a source and passes through the body. Exposure to radiation released during nuclear accidents and explosions, or during cancer radiotherapy, is well known to cause vascular pathologies because of the ionizing effects of electromagnetic radiations (photons) such as gamma rays. There is however, another type of less well-known radiation - charged ion particles, and these ato

Health effects of prenatal radiation exposure.

Pregnant women are at risk of exposure to nonionizing and ionizing radiation resulting from necessary medical procedures, workplace exposure, and diagnostic or therapeutic interventions before the pregnancy is known. Nonionizing radiation includes microwave, ultrasound, radio frequency, and electromagnetic waves. In utero exposure to nonionizing radiation is not associated with significant risks; therefore, ultrasonography is safe to perform during pregnancy. Ionizing radiation includes particles and electromagnetic radiation (e.g., gamma rays, x-rays). In utero exposure to ionizing radiation

Radiation-therapy effects on bone density.

Only limited data are available on the effects of radiation-therapy on the mineral content of the bone of children treated for malignancy. The incidence of osteopenia varies between 8 and 23%, but confounding factors were the use of chemotherapy and the effects of prophylactic cranial irradiation. The factors influencing bone atrophy are no more clearly defined in adults treated for cancer by high dose local radiation-therapy. Pathological observed in patient tissues, indicates a clear role for vascular changes in the development of osteopenia, although there remains some uncertainty as to the

Overview of radiation effects and control.

The controversy over the effects of low-level exposure to radiation enhances the perception of radiation as a particularly insidious phenomenon of nature. Yet radiation has many useful purposes, including applications for medical diagnosis and therapy, industrial quality control, and the generation of electrical power. Attainment of such societal benefits without compromising the health and safety of potentially exposed persons requires imposition of rigorous measures to control radiation exposures.

Epidemiological studies of atomic bomb radiation at the Radiation Effects Research Foundation.

Epidemiological studies of people who were exposed to atomic bomb radiation and their children who were conceived after parental exposure to radiation (F1) have investigated late health effects of atomic bomb radiation and its transgenerational effects. Those studies were initiated by the Atomic Bomb Casualty Commission (ABCC) in the 1950s. ABCC was reorganized to the Radiation Effects Research Foundation (RERF) in 1975, which continued the work of the ABCC. Follow-up of vital status and cause of death is performed for all RERF cohorts, including the atomic bomb survivors (the Life Span Study:

Cervical cytology: Radiation and other therapy effects.

The different treatment options for carcinoma cervix include radiation, chemotherapy, and surgical treatments. Cytological analysis of smears is crucial for patient follow-up to determine response to therapy and to diagnose the persistence or recurrence of malignancy. Anatomical alterations and changes in cell morphology following radiation or chemotherapy make collecting and interpreting cervical cytology samples difficult. These issues can be mitigated by liquid-based cytology. Ionizing radiation is used in radiotherapy (RT) to kill cells. It is important that cytologists are aware of altera

Radiation-Induced Cerebro-Ophthalmic Effects in Humans.

Exposure to ionizing radiation (IR) could affect the human brain and eyes leading to both cognitive and visual impairments. The aim of this paper was to review and analyze the current literature, and to comment on the ensuing findings in the light of our personal contributions in this field. The review was carried out according to the PRISMA guidelines by searching PubMed, Scopus, Embase, PsycINFO and Google Scholar English papers published from January 2000 to January 2020. The results showed that prenatally or childhood-exposed individuals are a particular target group with a higher risk for

[Imaging of side effects after radiation therapy].

BACKGROUND: Peritumoral normal tissue is inevitably also irradiated during radiotherapy, depending on the location and size of the target volume as well as the cumulative dose. Depending on the temporal course after irradiation acute, subacute, and chronic alterations are described in co-irradiated normal tissue that can be detected by imaging. Radiation damage can be transient or persistent. OBJECTIVE: This article gives an overview of the most important signs of radiation-induced radiogenic alterations to tissue in various organ systems. FINDINGS: Frequent radiation-induced tissue alterati

[Effects of radiation exposure on human body].

There are two types of radiation health effect; acute disorder and late on-set disorder. Acute disorder is a deterministic effect that the symptoms appear by exposure above a threshold. Tissues and cells that compose the human body have different radiation sensitivity respectively, and the symptoms appear in order, from highly radiosensitive tissues. The clinical symptoms of acute disorder begin with a decrease in lymphocytes, and then the symptoms appear such as alopecia, skin erythema, hematopoietic damage, gastrointestinal damage, central nervous system damage with increasing radiation dose

Low-dose radiation effects: interactions and synergism.

Experimental data from the author's laboratory are discussed, which demonstrate mutagenic and carcinogenic effects of low dose and low dose-rate exposure to ionizing radiation, and the modification of these effects by various chemical agents. These data are derived from studies of mutagenesis and neoplastic transformation in vitro, as well as on the induction of lung cancer in hamsters. On the basis of these results, several avenues of future research are suggested. These include: 1) the development and application of new human cell systems for studying radiation mutagenesis and transformation

Effects of prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation.

Prenatal exposure to ionizing radiation induces some effects that are seen at birth and others that cannot be detected until later in life. Data from A-bomb survivors in Hiroshima and Nagasaki show a diminished number of births after exposure under 4 wk of gestational age. Although a wide array of congenital malformations has been found in animal experimentation after such exposure to x rays, in humans only small head size (exposure at 4-17 wk) and mental retardation (exposure primarily at 8-15 wk) have been observed. In Hiroshima, small head size occurred after doses of 0.10-0.19 Gy or more,

Radiation effects on the external auditory canal.

Radiation is used to treat many head and neck tumors, and of necessity the temporal bone is sometimes included in the paths of radiation. We studied the histopathology of the external auditory canal in 13 temporal bones from 10 patients who had undergone irradiation for head and neck tumors. The pathologic changes noted could be divided into: bony changes, and soft tissue changes. Bony changes manifested were those of resorption, fibrosis, empty lacunae, and sequestration. There were five soft tissue changes: the formation of a secondary cholesteatoma, ulceration of the lining epithelium with

Cardiovascular effects of radiation therapy: practical approach to radiation therapy-induced heart disease.

Radiation induced heart diseases (RIHD) are increasingly recognized as more patients who received radiation therapy survive their diseases with improved management of various malignancies. Radiation affects every component of the heart, ranging from subclinical histopathologic changes to overt clinical disease. Pericardial involvement is the most common and includes asymptomatic pericardial effusion and constrictive pericarditis. The diseases involving the myocardium, valvular apparatus, and conduction system are often subclinical. When symptomatic, they are often the harbinger of more lethal,
