Developing Advocacy Skills in Breast Radiologists.

Advocacy is an essential skill for all breast radiologists, and yet, few if any have formal training in how to be effective. Developing such skills allows breast radiologists to promote improved patient access to indicated imaging, secure resources to support evidence-based care, and advance one's own career. Skills that are key to effective advocacy fall into 5 pillars: leadership, communication, branding, media and social media, and legislative engagement. In this article, we identify these critical skills and provide resources to help breast radiologists become better advocates for their pa…

Overview of Interventional Pulmonology for Radiologists.

Interventional pulmonology is a growing field specializing in minimally invasive procedures of the mediastinum, lungs, airways, and pleura. … ocedure imaging is also essential in determining outcome success and the presence of complications. Radiologists should be familiar with these procedures as well as the relevant imaging features in both planning and later surveillance. Evolving techniques that may become more widely available in the near future include robotic-assisted bronchoscopy, bronchosco …

Imaging "Thyroiditis": A Primer for Radiologists.

A variety of inflammatory disorders, generically classified as "thyroiditis," can affect the thyroid gland diffusely, generating distinctive radiographic patterns. While a precise diagnosis can seldom be made based on sonographic appearance alone, interpreting these patterns in the correct clinical and biochemical context will help support the most appropriate diagnosis. We believe that the generic term "thyroiditis" is often not helpful and often may be incorrect. Therefore, it is important for radiologists to understand the sonographic and functional correlations to provide the most appropri…

Violence against radiologists. II: Psychosocial factors.

PURPOSE: Violence against radiologists is a growing problem. This study evaluated the psychosocial factors associated with this phenomenon. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A questionnaire was administered to 992 Italian radiologists. RESULTS: Physical violence experienced in the previous 12-month period was associated with the radiologist's poor mental health [odds ratio (OR) 1.11] and overcommitment to work (OR 1.06), whereas radiologists in good physical health (OR 0.64), with job satisfaction (OR 0.96) and with overall happiness (OR 0.67) were less exposed. Nonphysical abuse was equally associated…

Computer hardware for radiologists: Part 2.

Computers are an integral part of modern radiology equipment. In the first half of this two-part article, we dwelt upon some fundamental concepts regarding computer hardware, covering components like motherboard, central processing unit (CPU), chipset, random access memory (RAM), and memory modules. In this article, we describe the remaining computer hardware components that are of relevance to radiology. "Storage drive" is a term describing a "memory" hardware used to store data for later retrieval. Commonly used storage drives are hard drives, floppy drives, optical drives, flash drives, and

Variability in radiologists' interpretations of mammograms.

BACKGROUND: Despite the proved value of mammography in screening for breast cancer, its efficacy depends on radiologists' interpretations. The variability in such interpretations is not well understood. METHODS: Using a technique of stratified random sampling, we selected 150 mammograms obtained in 1987: 27 from women with histopathologically confirmed breast cancer and 123 from women with no evidence of breast cancer after three years of follow-up examinations. Ten radiologists, who were unaware of the diagnoses and research hypothesis, each interpreted the 150 mammograms. Disagreement was a…

Diagnostic value of shear wave elastography for diabetic peripheral neuropathy: comparison between junior radiologists and senior radiologists.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a prevalent complication of diabetes mellitus, and is often underdiagnosed because of its variable clinical presentation and operator-dependent diagnostic tools. Shear wave elastography (SWE), which quantitatively evaluates tissue stiffness, has the potential to enhance conventional ultrasound by improving diagnostic accuracy and consistency. Nevertheless, a comprehensive analysis examining the extent to which the integration of SWE with conventional ultrasound can enhance the diagnostic performance of radiologists across varying levels of ex…

Radiologists' Trust in AI-Based Systems.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly introduced into radiological practice to support image interpretation, workflow optimization, and diagnostic decision-making. However, successful clinical adoption depends not only on technical performance but also on radiologists' trust in these systems. This study investigates radiologists' perceptions of AI in clinical practice and examines how these perceptions relate to trust in AI-assisted diagnostic decision-making. We conducted a cross-sectional online survey among practicing radiologists in Sweden. The survey comprised eight thematic sectio…

Gastrointestinal oncologic emergencies: a radiologists' guide.

The prevalence of cancer continues to increase both in the United States and worldwide. Oncologic emergencies are potentially life-threatening conditions in cancer patients, and these may be directly or indirectly related to the underlying malignancy. Radiologists must be well-versed not only in cancer staging, but also in potential cancer related complications and emergencies to guide prompt appropriate management. Oncologic emergencies may occur due to direct local effects by the tumor or metastasis, associated systemic manifestations, or due to treatment related effects. These emergencies m…

Radiomics: A Primer for Breast Radiologists.

Radiomics has a long-standing history in breast imaging with computer-aided detection (CAD) for screening mammography developed in the late 20th century. Although conventional CAD had widespread adoption, the clinical benefits for experienced breast radiologists were debatable due to high false-positive marks and subsequent increased recall rates. The dramatic growth in recent years of artificial intelligence-based analysis, including machine learning and deep learning, has provided numerous opportunities for improved modern radiomics work in breast imaging. There has been extensive radiomics …

Can prevalence expectations drive radiologists' behavior?

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: To measure the effect of explicit prevalence expectation on the performance of experienced radiologists during image interpretation of pulmonary lesions on chest radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Each of 22 experienced radiologists was allocated to one of three groups to interpret a set of 30 (15 abnormal) posteroanterior chest images on two occasions to decide if pulmonary lesions were present. Before each viewing, the radiologists were told that the images contained a specific number of abnormal images: group 1, 9 versus 15; group 2, 22 versus 15; and group 3, no…
