Changes in the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) during space flight have been suspected of contributing to space motion sickness. The horizontal VOR was studied in nine subjects on two space shuttle missions. Active unpaced head oscillation at 0.3 Hz was used as the stimulus to examine the gain and phase of the VOR with and without visual input, as well as the visual suppression of the reflex. No statistically significant changes were noted inflight in the gains or phase shifts of the VOR during any test condition, or between space motion sickness susceptible and nonsusceptible populations. The relationship between the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and gaze fixation was investigated in normal adults, normal children, patients with cerebellar lesion and patients with labyrinthine dysfunction. Large VOR gains were found in patients with cerebellar lesion and normal children, both presenting poor suppression by gaze. Pathological decline in the VOR gain with labyrinthine lesion impaired spatial gaze fixation; however, it did not affect fixation-induced suppression. Gaze effect on the VOR, whether amplifying or suppressing, decreased linearly and rapidly at higher frequencies so that

The medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) is the final common pathway for all conjugate adducting horizontal eye movements, as well as for the vertical-torsional vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). MLF lesion causes adduction paresis of ipsilesional (adducting) eye with dissociated nystagmus of contralesional (abducting) eye-the well-known clinical syndrome of internuclear ophthalmoplegia (INO). We measured the VOR stimulation and also any catch-up saccades, from individual semicircular canal (SCC) evoked by the head impulse test (HIT), using head and binocular 3-dimensional scleral search coils in

An electrical stimulation in man applied between the two mastoids could facilitate the distinction between labyrinthine and retrolabyrinthine lesions by stimulating directly the primary vestibular afferences. However, for this test to be really effective in current medical practice, the results obtained in normal subjects must be symmetrical and reproducible one day to another. The ocular responses induced by a constant electrical stimulation of 2.5 mA, applied between the two mastoids for 30 s (electrically evoked vestibulo-ocular reflex [EVOR]), in one direction and the other, were quantifie

Vestibulo-ocular reflex suppression (VORS) testing remains an underutilized yet useful bedside tool for differentiating central and peripheral vestibular disorders in patients with dizziness. While most clinicians focus on the head impulse test (HIT) for detecting vestibular hypofunction, assessing the VORS can reveal central dysfunction, by observing compensatory saccades when turning their head while simultaneously following a moving object. Modern clinical practice incorporates visual-interactive smartphone-based methods for VORS assessment. This sign does not have a topographical value per

Vestibulo-ocular reflexes (VOR) are mediated by frequency-tuned pathways that separately transform the different dynamic and static aspects of head motion/position-related sensory signals into extraocular motor commands. Voltage-dependent potassium conductances such as those formed by Kv1.1 are important for the ability of VOR circuit elements to encode highly transient motion components. Here we describe the impact of the Kv1.1 channel blocker 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) on spontaneous and motion-evoked discharge of superior oblique motoneurons. Spike activity was recorded from the motor nerve in

In order to determine the effect of figure skating on the functional plasticity of the vestibular system, we quantified vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) and motion sickness (MS) intensity in 11 female figure skaters and 11 matched control subjects. Vestibular stimulation consisted of three cycles of sinusoidal rotation (0.025 Hz, +/-60 degrees /s) and two velocity steps of 60 degrees /s (acceleration 60 degrees /s(2)). Nauseogenic stimulation consisted of a constant velocity (60 degrees /s) off vertical axis rotation (OVAR) using a 15 degrees tilt angle. Subjective sickness symptoms were rated im

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: The vestibular autorotation test (VAT) examines responses to active head oscillations at frequencies between 2 and 6 Hz in the horizontal and vertical planes while the subject is fixating a visible target. At these frequencies, the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) is the main source of eye movement for ocular stabilization, although other visual and somatosensory information interacts with the response. Because the neural mismatch theory places emphasis on multimodal sensory interactions as the cause of motion sickness, using the VAT, which measures eye movements resulting

Rotational testing is useful for clinical evaluation of vestibular dysfunction affecting the vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR). Early applications relied on visual observation of nystagmus following turning. In modern use, control theory descriptors (e.g., gain and phase) are applied to patient data for comparisons with normal values. Motorized rotational chairs are used to passively oscillate patients with sinusoidal harmonic acceleration (SHA) stimulus profiles, usually at low frequencies (0.02 to 0.2 Hz). Changes in low-frequency phase and asymmetry, relative to normal values, provide useful in

In a double-blind, placebo controlled, crossover study, we evaluated the effects of cinnarizine on the VOR of 55 healthy young subjects. VOR was evaluated by the Sinusoidal Harmonic Acceleration (SHA) test at frequencies of 0.01, 0.02, 0.04, 0.08 and 0.16 Hz. There was a reduction in VOR gain in 16 of the 20 SHA trials performed under the influence of cinnarizine alone (25 mg and 50 mg) and cinnarizine 25 mg in combination with 10 mg domperidone or 1 transdermal scopolamine patch. This decrease in VOR gain was significant in only a few SHA trials. Phase lead was not consistently affected by ci

Horizontal plane optokinetic (OKR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) eye movements were obtained from normal subjects in response to pseudorandom rotational stimulation. Results showed large intersubject variability in OKR responses. Typical OKR responses had approximately constant gain (Mean 0.65) over 0.02-1.5 Hz. Response phase was near zero below 0.1 Hz with increasing phase lags as frequency increased consistent with time delays of 180 ms (Mean value). Variations in OKR responses included declining gains with increasing frequency and phase lags consistent with time delays of 90 to 268 ms.

Exposure before flight to an environment that provides altered visual-vestibular relationships similar to those seen in weightlessness might facilitate adaptation to spaceflight. Fifteen normal subjects were exposed for 0, 5, and 20 min to an abnormal visual-vestibular environment in which the vestibular sensation of lateral tilt was associated with the visual impression of lateral translation. Lateral eye movement elicited by similar tilt in darkness was measured before and at intervals after the exposure. Of the 15 subjects, 12 showed increased VOR amplitude following the exposure, but this

The time constant of the decay of slow-phase eye velocity of postrotatory nystagmus or optokinetic after-nystagmus is reduced during exposure to a stationary visual surround (visual suppression). It is also reduced after tilting the head (tilt suppression). A "dump" mechanism in the vestibulo-ocular reflex has been proposed to rapidly discharge activity from the central vestibular system during both types of suppression. Monkeys lost this mechanism after lesions of the nodulus and uvula. They also lost the ability to habituate the time constant of nystagmus on repeated exposure to optokinetic

OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the effects of acquired esotropia on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) gain in children using video (vHIT) and functional head impulse (fHIT) tests.
METHODS: A total of 62 children aged 6-18 years, with acquired esotropia and normal vision, were evaluated in the study. The patients were divided into two sub-groups: accommodative and non-accommodative. VOR gains were analyzed by performing lateral canal vHIT and fHIT with monocular and binocular recordings by a single examiner.
RESULTS: Seventeen (10 male, 7 female) children with accommodative esotropia, 24

Prior studies indicate that the human translational vestibulo-ocular reflex (tVOR) generates eye rotations approximately half the magnitude required to keep the line of sight pointed at a stationary object--a compensation ratio (CR) of ∼0.5. We asked whether changes of visual or vestibular stimuli could increase the CR of tVOR. First, subjects viewed their environment through an optical device that required eye movements to increase by ∼50% to maintain fixation of a stationary visual target. During vertical translation, eye movements did increase, but tVOR CR remained at ∼0.5. Second, subjects

PURPOSE: The linear vestibulo-ocular reflex (LVOR) is mediated primarily by the otolith organs in the inner ear. Skew deviation is a vertical strabismus believed to be caused by imbalance of otolithic projections to ocular motor neurons (disynaptically through the medial longitudinal fasciculus in the brain stem or polysynaptically through the cerebellum). The authors postulated that if skew deviation is indeed caused by damage to these projections, patients with skew deviation would show abnormal LVOR responses.
METHODS: Six patients with skew deviation caused by brain stem or cerebellar les

Loss of vestibulo-ocular reflexes occurred in two patients with acute supratentorial lesions who received therapeutic doses of anticonvulsant drugs. There was no clinical or angiographic evidence of focal brain-stem damage. Absence of vestibulo-ocular reflexes is attributed to a combination of acute cerebral damage and anticonvulsant drugs. The loss of these reflexes in patients with acute cerebral lesions cannot be interpreted as evidence of irreversible brain-stem injury.

INTRODUCTION: The visually enhanced vestibulo-ocular reflex (VVOR) and vestibulo-ocular reflex suppression (VOR-S) are critical in evaluating vestibular and cerebellar contributions to oculomotor control. This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and reliability of metronome-synchronised, manual head rotation video-oculography for evaluating VVOR and VOR-S in healthy participants. A secondary aim was to determine the effects of head rotation frequency and direction, and participant's age, on VVOR and VOR-S gain and saccades.
METHODS: Twenty-four healthy individuals aged 20-79 years unde
