Sorption activity was studied of a naturally occurring dispersive mineral saponite towards certain representatives of the families of Picornaviridae and Reoviridae: poliomyelitis type II viruses, Coxsackie B 1 and B 6, monkey disease rotavirus. A new grass carp reovirus (GCRV), healthy grass carp reovirus (HGCRV), was isolated from grass carp in 2019. Reovirus Type 2 was isolated from three patients aged 5, 9 and 10 years. The etiological role of Reovirus in one case was confirmed by demonstration of antibodies in convalescent serum and none in acute serum. This paper describes the isolation and identification of a novel class of reoviruses, the so-called enteric reovirus strains (ERS). The pathogenicity, dissemination, induction of malabsorption syndrome (MAS), reaction pattern with different monoclonal antibodies, and serotype properties are reported. Upon screening of reoviruses in the field, it was observed that these reovirus strains were also present in other countries and were usually isolated from birds with MAS. Based on the data presented here, it is proposed that the so-called ERS are associated with MAS.
