Alcoholism and reproduction.

A brief overview of the reproductive capacities of both men and women in alcoholism is presented. A historical evaluation indicates a resurgence of interest in this area. The effect of chronic alcohol consumption on both male fertility and potency is reported in conjunction with alcohol-mediated effects on the female subject. Emphasis is placed on pharmacokinetics, metabolism and drinking behavior of the alcoholic female. The adverse actions of some therapeutic drugs and chronic alcohol consumption is discussed in relationship to fetal alcohol syndrome and the accompanied mental and somatic ab

Genre bleed, reproduction and the climate crisis in Louisa Hall's Reproduction (2023).

This paper argues that Louisa Hall's Reproduction (2023) represents an example of genre bleed; a text that engages with multiple genres in order to represent the crisis of the contemporary moment. It argues that pregnancy should be read as a form with specific affordances (following Caroline Levine's work), and that such a position has implications for the wider field of medical humanities and specifically literature and medicine where texts are often grouped on the basis of illnesses, disabilities or medical conditions. The paper situates science fiction as a genre that has always had birth a…

IMPACT OF REAL-LIFE ENVIRONMENTAL EXPOSURES ON REPRODUCTION: Biosolids and male reproduction.

ABSTRACT: The impact of the menstrual cycle on physical fitness in athletes remains controversial in the scientific literature. Notable fluctuations in sex hormones occur at three key phases of the menstrual cycle, during which estrogen and progesterone levels vary significantly. In addition, the presence of regular bleeding does not ensure ovulation; therefore many women may not be aware that they have anovulatory cycles. These sex hormones can influence the physiology of women and can affect their level of cardiorespiratory performance depending on the phase of the menstrual cycle they are i

Uterine Leiomyomas and Reproduction.

There is a prevailing opinion by gynecologists, much of it based on expert opinion or anecdotal evidence, that myomas are detrimental to pregnancy. Newer data challenge much of this dogma, but incorrect assumptions remain. Although not impeccable, multiple data address the correlation between myomas and reproduction, and some emerging evidence addresses surgical removal of these myomas and subsequent outcomes. A thorough literature search was performed, and the amassed data were analyzed to answer some of our most important queries about the role that myomas play in pregnancy and delivery. Ute…

Gut hormones and reproduction.

Reproduction and metabolism are intricately linked. Gut hormones play key roles in the regulation of body weight and glucose homeostasis, factors that influence the functioning of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis and reproductive outcomes. Data from rodent models suggest gut hormones may have direct stimulatory effects on reproductive hormone release. However, the effects of gut hormones on reproductive function in humans are more complex, with possible involvement of direct (e.g. via gut hormone receptor agonism) as well as indirect (e.g. via weight reduction in people with obesity) me…

Telomeres, aging and reproduction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Women's fertility decay starts at the mid 30 s. However, the current delay of childbearing leads to ovarian aging and the need of assisted reproduction technologies (ART). Telomere biology is one of the main pathways involved in organismal aging. Thus, this review will focus on the knowledge acquired during the last 2 years about the telomere pathway and its influence on female fertility and the consequences for the newborn. RECENT FINDINGS: New research on telomere biology reaffirms the relationship of telomere attrition and female infertility. Shorter maternal telomeres, …

Metabolic Syndrome and Reproduction.

Metabolic syndrome (MetS) and infertility are two afflictions with a high prevalence in the general population. MetS is a global health problem increasing worldwide, while infertility affects up to 12% of men. Despite the high prevalence of these conditions, the possible impact of MetS on male fertility has been investigated by a few authors only in the last decade. In addition, underlying mechanism(s) connecting the two conditions have been investigated in few preclinical studies. The aim of this review is to summarize and critically discuss available clinical and preclinical studies on the r

Mitochondrial Sirtuins in Reproduction.

Mitochondria act as hubs of numerous metabolic pathways. Mitochondrial dysfunctions contribute to altering the redox balance and predispose … competence of reproductive cells, organs, and embryos. Most studies are focused on SIRT3 in female reproduction, providing evidence that SIRT3 improves the competence of oocytes in humans and animal models. Moreover, SIRT3 protects oocytes, early embryos, and ovaries against stress conditions. The relationship between derangement of SIRT3 signaling and the im …

Genetics in human reproduction.

Approximately 50% of the causes of infertility are of genetic origin. The objective of this study was to analyze the role of genetics in human reproduction by reviewing the main genetic causes of infertility and the use of preimplantation genetic testing in Brazil. This literature review comprised articles in English and Portuguese published on databases PubMed, Scielo, and Bireme from 1990 to 2019. Randomized clinical trials and specialized guidelines were given preference whenever possible. Genetic cause can be traced back to up to 20% of the cases of severe azoospermia or oligozoospermia. S…

Exosomes of male reproduction.

Exosomes are nanosized membrane vesicles secreted by wide variety of cells and found in abundance in biological fluids including semen. They contain cargo of lipids, proteins, microRNAs and mRNAs, and are known to play a major role in intracellular communication. Seminal exosomes mainly include epididymosomes and prostasomes. Most of the proteins associated with the epididymosomes are transferred to the sperm subcellular or membranous domains during their epididymal transit and are involved in the acquisition of fertilizing ability, modulation of motility and protection against oxidative stres

Functional Amyloids in Reproduction.

Amyloids are traditionally considered pathological protein aggregates that play causative roles in neurodegenerative disease, diabetes and prionopathies. However, increasing evidence indicates that in many biological systems nonpathological amyloids are formed for functional purposes. In this review, we will specifically describe amyloids that carry out biological roles in sexual reproduction including the processes of gametogenesis, germline specification, sperm maturation and fertilization. Several of these functional amyloids are evolutionarily conserved across several taxa, including human…

Psychotropic drugs, including antidepressants, antipsychotics, and anticonvulsants, all have negative effects on sexual function and semen q … ease prolactin (PRL) levels in some men, and this is often credited with inhibitory effects on male reproduction; however, testosterone levels are generally normal, reducing the likelihood of direct HPG axis inhibition by PRL. The tricyclic antidepressants have also been shown to increase PRL levels in some studies but not in others. The exception is the tricy …

Antivirals and Male Reproduction.

The use of antiviral medications has increased with the recognition and treatment of HIV infections, and these drugs are the main focus of this chapter. HIV has become a chronic disease, and many men with HIV desire children. The disease itself has profound negative effects on semen quality, as does infection with hepatitis C virus (HCV), so treatment with antivirals generally improves semen quality in men with longer duration of infection and/or greater symptoms. Several changes in medical practice have allowed studies of pharmacopathology of antiviral medications and brought focus on medicat

Melatonin and male reproduction.

Melatonin is a neurohormone secreted by the pineal gland whose concentrations in the body are regulated by both the dark-light and seasonal cycles. The reproductive function of seasonal breeding animals is clearly influenced by the circadian variation in melatonin levels. Moreover, a growing body of evidence indicates that melatonin has important effects in the reproduction of some non-seasonal breeding animals. In males, melatonin affects reproductive regulation in three main ways. First, it regulates the secretion of two key neurohormones, GnRH and LH. Second, it regulates testosterone synth…

microRNA in Human Reproduction.

microRNAs constitute a large family of approximately 21-nucleotide-long, noncoding RNAs. They emerged more than 20 years ago as key posttran … ion embryonic lethality in several animal models, attributing to these small RNA vital functions in reproduction and development. Another intriguing characteristic of microRNAs is their presence in body fluids in a remarkably stable form that is protected from endogenous RNase activity. In this chapter we will describe the current knowledge on microRNAs, speci …

Stem cells and reproduction.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the latest developments in reproductive tract stem cell biology. RECENT FINDINGS: In 2004, two studies indicated that ovaries contain stem cells which form oocytes in adults and that can be cultured in vitro into mature oocytes. A live birth after orthotopic transplantation of cryopreserved ovarian tissue in a woman whose ovaries were damaged by chemotherapy demonstrates the clinical potential of these cells. In the same year, another study provided novel evidence of endometrial regeneration by stem cells in women who received bone marrow transplants. This finding
