Leber's Hereditary Optic Neuropathy with Retinal Hemorrhage.

Leber's hereditary optic neuropathy (LHON) causes subacute visual loss, and, in the acute phase, the optic disc shows hyperemia, peripapillary telangiectasia, and swelling of the retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL). Rarely, retinal hemorrhage may be present. In this study, we investigated LHON cases with retinal hemorrhage in the acute phase. Among 82 cases (164 eyes) of LHON who visited the Inoue Eye Hospital, retinal hemorrhage was observed in 5 cases (5 eyes). The age at onset was 36 (27-46) years, with 4 male cases. Mitochondrial DNA analysis revealed the presence of the m.11778G > A variant …

Retinal Hemorrhage after SARS-CoV-2 Vaccination.

To report retinal vein occlusion (RVO) and age-related macular degeneration (AMD)-related submacular hemorrhage developing after administrat … ve. Further studies with larger patient group for evaluation of effect of SARS-CoV-2 vaccination on retinal hemorrhage are necessary.

[Shaken-baby syndrome and unilateral retinal hemorrhage?].

Unilateral retinal hemorrhage in infants can be caused by vitamin K deficiency. The case described here with fatal outcome presents the medical history of a 2-month-old infant with vitamin K deficiency bleeding caused by the refusal of vitamin K prophylaxis by the parents. Ocular signs were unilateral intraretinal hemorrhage with Roth spots and preretinal hemorrhage over the complete back of the eye. The case demonstrates the importance of vitamin K prophylaxis for newborns.

Branch retinal vein occlusion-associated subretinal hemorrhage.

PURPOSE: To study the pathomorphology of subretinal hemorrhage (SRH) seen in eyes with branch retinal vein occlusion (BRVO) and its association with visual prognosis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 42 consecutive patients (42 eyes) with BRVO that affected the fovea. Retinal structural changes were examined by spectral domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). RESULTS: On SD-OCT sections, serous retinal detachment was seen at the fovea in 35 eyes, 18 of which accompanied foveal SRH. While initial detection of foveal SRH had no correlation with initial visual acuity (VA), it was corr…

Retinal findings in children with intracranial hemorrhage.

PURPOSE: To identify the incidence of Terson's syndrome in children. DESIGN: Prospective, observational case series. PARTICIPANTS: Fifty-seven consecutive children with known intracranial hemorrhage from nonabuse causes. METHODS: Dilated fundus examination to detect intraretinal hemorrhages or other abnormalities. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Presence or absence of intraretinal hemorrhages or other abnormalities. RESULTS: Fifty-five patients (96%) had no evidence of intraretinal or vitreous hemorrhage. Two patients had abnormal retinal examinations. One patient had a single dot hemorrhage assoc…

Anterior retinal cryotherapy in diabetic vitreous hemorrhage.

Recurrent vitreous hemorrhage associated with proliferative retinopathy can occur in eyes that do not satisfactorily respond to argon laser pantretinal photocoagulation. To evaluate the effect of relatively low-risk surgical intervention, we performed peripheral retinal cryopexy on 24 eyes of 23 diabetic patients with proliferative diabetic retinopathy and vitreous hemorrhage. In most cases, cryopexy followed complete or nearly complete panretinal photocoagulation which did not prevent subsequent vitreous hemorrhage. Existing vitreous hemorrhage cleared postoperatively in 23 of 24 eyes. The be

White-centred retinal hemorrhage revealing acute leukemia.

INTRODUCTION: Acute leukemias are a heterogeneous group of hematological malignancies (blood cancers) that are rapidly life-threatening in t … resenting a brutal and bilateral reduced vision. The examination of eye fundus finds white-centered retinal hemorrhages The etiological assessment confirms the diagnosis of acute leukemia. A treatment based on chemotherapy allowed a complete remission. DISCUSSION: white-centered retinal hemorrhage is rarely revealing acute leukemias It may be related to a medullary …

Congenital retinal arterial loops and vitreous hemorrhage.

In two adolescents, mild vitreous hemorrhage occurred from the area of retinal arterial loops near the optic nerve. In both cases the hemorrhage cleared without further complications. This vascular malformation may be associated with secondary complications more frequently than has previously been reported.

Surgical Management of Vitreous Hemorrhage Secondary to Avulsed Retinal Vessels Without Retinal Tears.

PURPOSE: To present a case series of patients who underwent pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for dense vitreous hemorrhage (VH) secondary to avulsed retinal vessels in the setting of acute posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). METHODS: The clinical presentation, surgical management, and outcomes of patients who underwent PPV for VH caused by avulsed retinal vessels were evaluated. RESULTS: Four patients underwent PPV for dense VH. After evacuation of the VHs, all eyes were found to have avulsed retinal vessels without retinal tears. CONCLUSIONS: Dense VH in the setting of a PVD may preclude adequ

Multiple retinal arterial macroaneurysms associated with submacular hemorrhage.

PURPOSE: To present the unusual case of multiple retinal arterial macroaneurysms (RAMs) associated with an extensive submacular hemorrhage. METHODS: A 64-year-old hypertensive woman is presented including the clinical findings, fluorescein angiography, and optical coherence tomography. RESULTS: The patient presented with 20/200 vision due to a dense submacular hemorrhage in the right eye. Fluorescein angiography revealed 4 hyperfluorescent lesions along the inferotemporal arteriole corresponding to RAMs. Optical coherence tomography confirmed RAM rupture with no choroidal abnormality. The pa

Retinal hemorrhage associated with perinatal distress in newborns.

PURPOSE: To describe the ophthalmoscopic features and natural history in a case series of eyes that developed intraocular hemorrhages associated with perinatal distress and to evaluate their clinical courses. METHODS: A retrospective chart review of 289 neonates with a medical history of perinatal distress was conducted. Among these 289 patients (578 eyes), 29 eyes of 17 neonates were found to have had retinal hemorrhages or vitreous hemorrhages (VH). A comprehensive chart review, including details of fundoscopic findings and perinatal history, was conducted. RESULTS: Intraocular hemorrhage …

[Expulsive retinal hemorrhage. Secondary treatment by vitreoretinal surgery].

Expulsive hemorrhage is a catastrophic complication of intraocular surgery that can result in total loss of vision. Patients with massive hemorrhagic choroidal detachment were treated by vitrectomy and silicone oil or gas tamponade. A reattachment of the retina was achieved with stabilization of visual function. Properly timed drainage of the choroidal fluid components with pars plana vitrectomy and silicone or gas injection is a useful approach in these disorders and may salvage useful vision in complicated cases.

Retinal Hemorrhages: Abusive Head Trauma or Not?

Abusive head trauma is an important cause of morbidity and mortality in infants and young children. Retinal hemorrhages (RHs) are frequently seen, particularly during dilated eye examination of these children. This review focuses on the evaluation of children with RH, with emphasis on the differential diagnosis, pathophysiology, and distinguishing features of RHs due to abusive head trauma. Many causes exist for RHs in infants and children. Most medical and accidental traumatic causes result in a pattern of RH that is nonspecific and not typical of the pattern and distribution of RHs seen in c…
