Rapid resolution of retinoschisis with acetazolamide.

PURPOSE: To report the results of an acetazolamide (Diamox(®)) treatment regimen in a genetically confirmed case of X-linked juvenile retinoschisis (XLRS). METHODS: A patient with XLRS was prescribed acetazolamide (Diamox(®)) at a dose of 500 mg/day, then discontinued the treatment due to non-compliance for 4 days, and finally resumed the course of treatment. Best-corrected visual acuity, retinal structure, and function were monitored with autofluorescence, spectral domain-optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT), adaptive optics scanning laser ophthalmoscopy (AOSLO), and full-field electroretin…

Indications for vitrectomy in congenital retinoschisis.

Two patients with congenital retinoschisis developed rhegmatogenous retinal detachments with either a tractional component or associated vitreous haemorrhage. The second patient also had a large, raised schisis cavity under vitreous traction, which obscured visualisation of the macula. Vitrectomy is indicated for some patients with congenital retinoschisis.

Dramatic regression of macular and peripheral retinoschisis with dorzolamide 2 % in X-linked retinoschisis: a case report.

BACKGROUND: X-linked retinoschisis is one of the more frequently encountered inherited macular retinal disorders affecting young males, causing loss of vision. Patients exhibit macular schisis and peripheral schisis, which can mimic retinal detachment, a very different entity that requires surgical intervention. CASE PRESENTATION: An 8-month-old African-American boy was presented to our hospital with severe X-linked retinoschisis involving symmetrical bullous peripheral retinoschisis in both eyes, mimicking retinal detachment. One eye received multiple surgeries for retinal detachment repair …

Choroidal neovascularisation secondary toX-linked retinoschisis.

AIMS: Choroidal neovascularisation (CNV) in patients with X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) has been poorly documented. This study aims to investigate the prevalence and clinical characteristics of CNV in patients with XLRS, as well as analyse the preliminary genotype-phenotype correlation. METHODS: A retrospective case series of patients with genetically confirmed XLRS was included. Demographic, clinical and genetic features were analysed, with a comparison between CNV and non-CNV eyes. RESULTS: Among 185 eyes of 129 patients with XLRS, the prevalence of CNV was 8.1% (15/185). The mean diagnost…

[Retinoschisis. 1. Diagnosis, classification, examination methods].

Extensive clinical data (595 patients) were made use of to work out a clinical classification and to isolate 2 groups of patients, i.e. one with primary retinoschisis and the other with secondary retinoschisis. According to etiopathogenesis, primary retinoschisis is subdivided into the inherited (congenital) variation and the acquired one. Congenital retinoschisis comprises, in its turn, juvenile and linked with X-chromosome variants as well as retinoschisis observed in Goldman-Favre and Wagner syndromes. The group of acquired retinoschisis is made up of degenerative (senile) and myopic varian…

Foveal ectopia in X-linked retinoschisis.

BACKGROUND: This study compared the position of the foveal center in patients with X-linked retinoschisis (XLRS) and controls and estimated the frequency of foveal ectopia in XLRS. METHOD: Fundus photographs of 23 patients with XLRS and 25 controls were reviewed. The position of the foveal center relative to the vertical center of the optic disk was determined from magnified images and expressed as the angle between the disk and foveal centers, relative to the horizontal meridian. The shortest distance between the foveal and disk centers was also measured, using the horizontal disk diameter (…

Multimodal Imaging Features of Degenerative Retinoschisis.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Degenerative retinoschisis is an age-related condition characterized by splitting of the neurosensory retina. While the diagnosis is typically made by clinical examination, imaging techniques are useful to further characterize the condition and differentiate it from retinal detachment. The purpose of the current study was to review the imaging features of degenerative retinoschisis and illustrate the multimodal findings in four eyes using contemporary imaging modalities. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This was a retrospective, consecutive case series of patients with degener…

X-linked retinoschisis: About a case.

X-linked retinoschisis (XLR) is a cause of retinal degeneration that affects males at an early age. X-linked disorders classically affect only males. We present the case of a 10-year-old female with the full spectrum of the pathology. BCVA 0.7 OU. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed bilateral foveal alteration with cystic appearance. The genetic study identified the variant c.644A>T (p.Glu215Gly) in the RS1 gene in homozygosis, associated with retinoschisis with X-linked recessive mode of inheritance. XLR is a condition that has a great variety in the severity of the disease and there is…

Retinoschisis: splitting hairs on retinal splitting.

Retinoschisis can be found in the fovea or the retinal periphery, either of which may be present in isolation, or in conjunction with each other. Foveal schisis may be congenital, acquired, or secondary to an associated ocular pathology such as optic pit, glaucoma, or pathological myopia. The visual acuity is dependent on the cause of the schisis and appropriate treatment is variable based on likelihood for progression and visual impact. There are many useful considerations and tools for evaluation and monitoring that can be used to determine the aetiology and prognosis of these retinal findin…

Infantile presentation of X linked retinoschisis.

Five infants who presented with nystagmus and/or strabismus were found to have bilateral highly elevated bullous retinoschisis involving the macula. Haemorrhage was present within the schisis cavity or the vitreous in four patients. The bullous retinoschisis eventually reattached spontaneously leaving pigment demarcation lines. A family history of X linked retinoschisis (XLRS) was known in two of the patients but in the other three subsequent investigation showed other male family members to be affected. It is important to recognise this uncommon presentation of XLRS so that the correct diagno…

Argon laser treatment of senile retinoschisis.

Fifty-seven eyes of 49 patients with senile retinoschisis were treated by argon laser photocoagulation and followed up for 3 to 6 years. In most of the treated eyes the retinoschisis either completely or partially collapsed and in none did the retinoschisis or loss of visual field progress further. No long-term complications due to the treatment were noted. In none of the treated eyes did retinal detachment develop. In view of this the indications at present for argon laser treatment in retinoschisis may be extended to include any case in which the retinoschisis progresses beyond the equator a…

Retinoschisis and Norrie disease: a missing link.

OBJECTIVE: Retinoschisis and Norrie disease are X-linked recessive retinal disorders caused by mutations in RS1 and NDP genes respectively. Both are likely to be monogenic and no locus heterogeneity has been reported. However, there are reports showing overlapping features of Norrie disease and retinoschisis in a NDP knock-out mouse model and also the involvement of both the genes in retinoschisis patients. Yet, the exact molecular relationships between the two disorders have still not been understood. The study investigated the association between retinoschisin (RS1) and norrin (NDP) using in…

Factors Determining the Morphology of Peripapillary Retinoschisis.

PURPOSE: We conducted cross-sectional examinations to determine the frequency of peripapillary retinoschisis (PRS) in eyes with glaucoma and suspected glaucoma and analyzed the pathogenesis of PRS by using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography (SD-OCT). PATIENTS AND METHODS: In 1516 cases involving glaucoma and suspected glaucoma, we retrospectively reviewed the disc and macular volume scans obtained by SD-OCT and categorized PRS into two groups based on whether the retinoschisis was closer to the optic nerve over the Bruch's membrane opening (BMO) (ahead group) or did not go past the …

[Retinoschisis--the clinical associations and therapeutic possibilities].

Retinoschisis is a vitreo retinal dystrophy characterized by splitting of the neuroretinal layers. The paper presents two cases of retinoschisis associated with retinal detachment. As a particularity, one patient was diagnosed with von Willebrand disease and the other one, with otomandibular dysostosis (Francois-Haustrade). There are presented therapeutical methods used in this two cases: Laser, Argon photocoagulation, transscleral cryopexia, scleral buckling and also the functional and anatomical results.
