Dupuytren's disease risk factors.

Dupuytren's is a common problem, but little is known about its aetiology. We have undertaken a large case-control study to assess and quantify the relative contributions of diabetes and epilepsy as risk factors for Dupuytren's in the community. Cases were patients with a diagnosis of Dupuytren's disease and, for each, two controls were individually matched by age, sex, and general practice. Our dataset included 821 cases and 1,642 controls. Five hundred and eighty-eight (72%) of the cases were men. The mean age at diagnosis was 62 (range 24-97) years. Diabetes was a significant risk factor for…

Recurrent erysipelas: risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Several systemic and regional risk factors have been described for erysipelas. However, those predisposing for recurrent episodes are not well defined. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective analysis of 574 patients hospitalized in our institution during a 3 year period. The analysis included demographic, epidemiologic, and medical chart review data with special attention to background disorders. The patients with single and recurrent episodes of erysipelas were compared. RESULTS: The recurrent cases occurred mainly in the lower limb with several risk factors that we…

[Risk factors for cryptorchidism].

OBJECTIVES: To identify the main risk factors for cryptorchidism in southeast Spain, and their possible association with environmental factors. METHODS: In this retrospective case-control study, the target population consisted of babies born in the University of Granada Hospital (UGH) in Granada, Spain, between 1 January 1992 and 31 December 1999, both inclusive. All boys from the target population aged 1 year or more diagnosed at the Pediatric Urology or Endocrinology Services of the UGH as having cryptorchidism (n = 70) were included, and a random sample of 144 baby boys born without crypto…

Risk factors for gastroschisis.

The prevalence at birth of gastroschisis, a rare abnormality of the abdominal wall, appears to have increased over the past decade. To characterize risk factors that might explain this increase, birth certificates for Washington State residents were compared for 62 infants born with gastroschisis during the years 1984 to 1987 and 617 randomly selected unaffected infants matched for birth year. After simultaneously adjusting for 14 potential risk factors, 4 factors stood out. Infants born during January, February, or March were at greater risk than infants born in any other months (odds ratio 2…

Epidemiology and risk factors.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: : This article presents current knowledge on stroke epidemiology. It covers recent data on the global burden of stroke, disparities, silent stroke, traditional and novel risk factors, and stroke triggers as well as the clinical implications of these findings. RECENT FINDINGS: : Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of chronic disability in the United States, and the burden of stroke worldwide is even greater. Large international and US case-control and prospective cohort studies have demonstrated disparities in stroke mortality and incidence. They…

Risk factors for cholangiocarcinoma.

Cholangiocarcinoma (CC) is the second most common primary hepatic malignancy after hepatocellular cancer. CC accounts for approximately 10%-25% of all hepatobiliary malignancies. There are considerable geographic and demographic variations in the incidence of CC. There are several established risk factors for CC, including parasitic infections, primary sclerosing cholangitis, biliary-duct cysts, hepatolithiasis, and toxins. Other less-established potential risk factors include inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis C virus, hepatitis B virus, cirrhosis, diabetes, obesity, alcohol drinking, toba…

Candida balanitis: risk factors.

BACKGROUND: The amount of available information on the prevalence and incidence of candida balanitis is still surprisingly scarce. OBJECTIVES: To determine the prevalence of candida colonization and candida balanitis in men attending a Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STD) clinic. To identify risk factors associated with candida balanitis. METHODS: During a 36-month period, a cross-sectional study was carried out on consecutive men attendees of the STD clinic in Hospital S. João, Porto. Clinical and epidemiological data were recorded. Specimen collection from the glans penis and the coronal su…

[Risk factors in cataract].

Cataract is one of the major causes of blindness throughout the world. Considerable effort to elucidate risk factors for cataract has been undertaken in hopes that simple, preventive strategies may be implemented to avoid or delay the progression of lens opacification. Advanced age, female gender, poor education, lower socioeconomic status, high or low body mass index and heavy alcohol consumption are some risk factors for senile cataract. Smoking appears to provide an oxidative challenge associated with depletion of antioxidants as well as with enhanced risk for cataract formation. Multiple d…

Risk factors for adenomyosis.

In order to analyse risk factors for adenomyosis, 707 consecutive women who underwent hysterectomy between January 1993 and June 1994 at the Clinica Luigi Mangiagalli, Milan, Italy, were interviewed before surgery by trained physicians. Information on the presence of adenomyosis was obtained from pathologic records. Out of the 707 women, adenomyosis was identified in 150 subjects (21.2%). Women who smoked tended to be at decreased risk of the condition: in comparison with women who had never smoked, the risk for current smokers was 0.7 (0.3-1.3) and the risk decreased with number of cigarettes…

Epidemiology and risk factors.

HBC is common, accounting for approximately 9% of the total breast cancer burden. Given 142,000 cases of breast cancer expected to occur in 1989, this would represent 12,780 cases of HBC patients. Soberingly, each patient represents a family with a variable number of inordinately high risk patients. HBC's natural history is distinctive and enables the identification of at risk patients who can benefit from highly targeted surveillance/management strategies. High priority must be given to development of biomarkers that will one day be found to have acceptable sensitivity and specificity to geno

Larynx cancer risk factors.

The larynx cancer relative risk has been evaluated (328 cases) in the stationary-native Upper Silesians (63.7%) and migrating (36.3%) male population. The particular control groups (656 men) included 418 and 238 men respectively not suffering from malignant neoplasms. The essentially higher larynx cancer incidence risk has been shown for men manual labor and exposed to the influence of various dusts, gases and vapors and other pollutants in their place of work. The increased substantial incidence risk is also true for men who smoke tobacco and are professionally exposed to the pollution. The r

Lifestyle factors and high-risk atherosclerosis: Pathways and mechanisms beyond traditional risk factors.

Despite major efforts to reduce atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease (ASCVD) burden with conventional risk factor control, significant res … s discouragingly minimal or not present. The aims of this review are (a) to discuss novel lifestyle risk factors and their underlying biochemical principles and (b) to provide new perspectives on potentially more feasible recommendations to improve long-term adherence to low-risk lifestyle factors.

Schizophrenia risk factors constitute general risk factors for psychiatric symptoms in the population.

BACKGROUND: The presence of a psychosis continuum is suggested by studies showing that schizophrenia and non-clinical psychotic symptoms in the general population share the same risk factors. However, to our knowledge no large-scale studies have been conducted which examine the specificity of these risk factors in the general population. AIM: To investigate whether socio-demographic characteristics associated with non-clinical psychotic symptoms are also associated with other psychiatric symptoms. And secondly, to examine to what extent concomitant psychiatric symptoms explain the relationshi…
