Clinico-pathological phenotypes of patients with prion diseases were compared with their PrP genotypes and transmission rate to mice. Sporadic and iatrogenic CJD patients without mutation and familial CJD patients with E200K showed uniform clinico-pathological features, synaptic-type deposition of PrPCJD and high rate of transmission of the disease to mice. GSS patients with P102L showed long duration of ataxia, numerous plaques in cerebellar cortex and transmitted the disease to mice in only one third of inoculated cases. Other mutations such as P105L, A117V, Y145stop, V180I, M232R and variou

In India the presence of Rickettsial disease in human is documented in many states however, the data on presence of Rickettsial infection in Andhra Pradesh is very scare. Therefore, a study was undertaken in Chittoor district (A.P.) to see the prevalence of Rickettsial infection in human and rodent population. 3-5 ml of human blood samples were collected from the patients attending the nearest hospitals of Tirumala, Tirupathi, Palmner and Chittoor areas. Live rodents were trapped and blood samples were collected from them during January and February 2008. Sera was separated and tested by Weil

Liver involvement in autosomal dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) is characterized by altered remodeling of the embryonic ductal plate (DP) with presence of biliary cysts and aberrant portal vasculature. The genetic defect causing ADPKD has been identified, but mechanisms of liver cyst growth remain uncertain. To investigate the possible role of angiogenic mechanisms, we have studied the immunohistochemical expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), angiopoietin-1 (Ang-1), angiopoietin-2 (Ang-2) and their receptors (VEGFR-1, VEGFR-2, Tie-2) in ADPKD, Caroli's disease, nor

Several anthropogenic activities exposure humans to the risk of rodent-borne diseases. These activities are but not limited to logging, clearing land for crop cultivation, and consuming rodents. Rodents are a highly diverse mammalian group and harbor many zoonotic diseases. This review focuses on dominant rodent-flea species, rodent-borne zoonotic diseases and awareness and management practices against rodent-borne diseases in Africa. Relevant academic literature spanning from 1974 to 2021 was analysed. Dominant rodent species reported in Africa included:- Mastomys natalensis and Rattus rattus

A classical theory of a key pathophysiological change in Parkinson's disease (PD) is that GABAergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars reticulata (SNr), an output structure of the basal ganglia, become hyperactive following the dopaminergic loss. Increased GABA release from the SNr neurons is thus likely to induce neuroadaptations in structures receiving a direct projection from the SNr, including the parabrachial nucleus (PBN), superior colliculus (SC), and periaqueductal gray (PAG). We have shown that the PBN indeed exhibits cellular and molecular changes in PD rat models. We thus expected

Rats lesioned shortly after birth with 6-OHDA have been proposed to be a near-ideal model of severe Parkinson's disease, because of non-lethality of the procedure, near-total destruction of nigrostriatal dopaminergic fibers, and near-total dopamine (DA) denervation of striatum. There are scarce data that in Parkinson's disease, activity of the central histaminergic system is increased. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine histamine content in the brain and the effect of histamine receptor antagonists on behavior of adult rats. At 3 days after birth, Wistar rats were pretreated wit

Rodents can transmit infectious diseases directly to humans and other animals via bites and exposure to infectious salivary aerosols and excreta. Arthropods infected while blood-feeding on rodents can also transmit rodent-borne pathogens indirectly to humans and animals. Environmental events, such as wet winters, cooler summers, heavy rains, and flooding, have precipitated regional rodent-borne infectious disease outbreaks; these outbreaks are now increasing with climate change. The objectives of this review are to inform wilderness medicine providers about the environmental conditions that ca

Multiple studies describe prodromal, nonmotor dysfunctions that affect the quality of life of patients who subsequently develop Parkinson's disease (PD). These prodromal dysfunctions comprise a wide array of autonomic issues, including severe gastrointestinal (GI) motility disorders such as dysphagia, delayed gastric emptying, and chronic constipation. Indeed, strong evidence from studies in humans and animal models suggests that the GI tract and its neural, mainly vagal, connection to the central nervous system (CNS) could have a major role in the etiology of PD. In fact, misfolded α-synuclei

Sleep disorders are frequently diagnosed in Parkinson's disease and manifested in the prodromal and advanced stages of the disease. These conditions, which in some cases affect more than 50% of Parkinson's disease (PD) patients, include hypersomnia, often manifested as excessive daytime sleepiness, insomnia, characterized by delayed initiation and fragmentation of sleep at night, and disruption of rapid eye movement (REM) sleep, resulting in loss of atonia and dream enactment. Standard dopamine replacement therapies for the treatment of motor symptoms are generally inadequate to combat sleep a

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a continuous diseases spectrum associated with obesity, type 2 diabetes, insulin resistance, and hyperlipidemia. Simple hepatic steatosis may progress to nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH), even fibrosis and cirrhosis, and finally hepatocellular carcinoma. In recent years, NAFLD has become a public health concern with increasing prevalence. However, the mechanisms underlying the pathogenesis remain incompletely understood, and few effective therapeutic approaches are available. Summary and Key Messages: A myriad of different rodent models has been d

INTRODUCTION: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder characterized by memory loss and personality changes, leading to dementia. Histopathological hallmarks are represented by aggregates of beta-amyloid peptide (Aβ) in senile plaques and deposition of hyperphosphorylated tau protein in neurofibrillary tangles in the brain. Rare forms of early onset familial Alzheimer's disease are due to gene mutations. This has prompted researchers to develop genetically modified animals that could recapitulate the main features of the disease. The use of these models is complemented by non-g

Sporadic Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) with 129M/M, and iatrogenic and familial CJD with E200K and M232R, showed similar clinicopathologic features, a synaptic type deposition of PrPCJD, and high transmission frequencies to mice. Sporadic patients with 129M/V or 129V/V, and mutation cases with V180I, showed slightly different features and low or null transmission frequencies to mice. Hereditary cases with P102L, P105L, A117V, Y145stop, and insertions had different features but all demonstrated a long clinical duration and the presence of PrP plaques. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the impact of impoundment and active public health interventions on rodent populations and rodent-borne diseases in the Three Gorges reservoir region from 1997 to 2012.
METHODS: Surveillance data from 1997 to 2012 were extracted from the Public Health Surveillance System of The Three Gorges established in 1997. Temporal changes in the incidences of hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) and leptospirosis, rodent density, pathogen-carrying rates, and their correlations were analyzed.
RESULTS: The average indoor and outdoor rodent densities decreased overall fro

Rodents are known to be reservoir hosts for at least 60 zoonotic diseases and are known to play an important role in their transmission and spread in different ways. We sampled different rodent communities within and around human settlements in Northern Senegal, an area subjected to major environmental transformations associated with global changes. Herein, we conducted an epidemiological study on their bacterial communities. One hundred and seventy-one (171) invasive and native rodents were captured, 50 from outdoor trapping sites and 121 rodents from indoor habitats, consisting of five speci

Due to numerousness of populations and width of ecologic valence, small rodents are important parts of almost any forest ecosystem. The represent an important animal group, which connects primary makers with higher trophic levels. They transmit various infectious diseases dangerous for the health of people and domestic and wild animals (trichinosis, leptospirosis, tick encephalitis, Lyme disease, hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome, etc.). The following species of small rodents live in forest ecosystems of Croatia: Chletrionomys glareolus Schreib., Arvicola terrestris L, M. subterraneus de S

Woo et al (Nature 368:750-753) reported that parenteral administration of paclitaxel arrested the striking renal enlargement and prolonged life in C57BL/6J-cpk/cpk mice with a rapidly progressive form of polycystic kidney disease (PKD). In the current study, we sought to determine whether paclitaxel could alter the progression of other forms of hereditary PKD in rodents. Paclitaxel was administered by intraperitoneal injection to C57BL/6J-cpk/cpk mice and Han:SPRD-Cy/Cy rats with rapidly progressive PKD and to DBA/2FG-pcy/pcy mice and Han:SPRD-Cy/+ rats with slowly progressive PKD. An epizootic of encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV) disease in pigs in the central west of New South Wales in association with a plague of mice (Mus musculus) in 1984 is described. The disease was confirmed in 47 outbreaks in 37 piggeries and 1152 pigs died, representing an overall death rate of 17.4% in pigs considered at risk. The disease was diagnosed in both intensively housed pigs and pigs farmed outdoors, with mortality rates higher in piggeries with less than 50 sows. The age at which pigs died ranged from 4 days to 24 weeks with higher death rates in younger pigs. Serological testing of

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) and Alzheimer's Disease-Related Dementia (ADRD) are the primary causes of dementia that has a devastating effect on the quality of life and is a tremendous economic burden on the healthcare system. The accumulation of extracellular beta-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and intracellular hyperphosphorylated tau-containing neurofibrillary tangles (NFTs) in the brain are the hallmarks of AD. They are also thought to be the underlying cause of inflammation, neurodegeneration, brain atrophy, and cognitive impairments that accompany AD. The discovery of APP, PS1, and PS2 mutations that
