Studies on Rift Valley fever in some African murids (Rodentia: Muridae).

Brains, spleens and livers of 2214 murids, 27 shrews and 7 dormice, trapped at 7 sites in Rhodesia, were tested in 277 pools for the presence of Rift Valley Fever virus. There were no isolations of Rift Valley Fever, but 69 isolations of an unidentified virus were obtained. Sixteen out of 867 sera had low-titre haemagglutination-inhibition activity against Rift Valley Fever antigen, but only one out of 1260 sera had neutralizing antibody. The evidence suggests that murids fail to encounter infection in nature and are unlikely to play a role in circulation and dissemination of Rift Valley Fever

The Potential of Systemic Control of Sand Flies Using Fipronil in the Novel Leishmania major (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae) Reservoirs Meriones tristrami (Rodentia: Muridea) and Meriones crassus (Rodentia: Muridea).

Leishmania major (Yakimoff & Schokhor, 1914), an important causative agent of Old World Cutaneous Leishmaniasis (CL), is transmitted by sand flies among a limited number of gerbilline reservoir-species. We can take advantage of this strong dependency to break the pathogen transmission cycle by using systemic insecticides that render the host toxic to the blood-feeding vector. We evaluated the potential of this approach with two novel reservoir species, incriminated for CL expansion in several sites in the Middle East. Specifically, we evaluated: 1) the residuality of the systemic insecticide f

Mandible shape and dwarfism in squirrels (Mammalia, Rodentia): interaction of allometry and adaptation.

Squirrels include several independent lineages of dwarf forms distributed into two ecological groups: the dwarf tree and flying squirrels. The mandible of dwarf tree squirrels share a highly reduced coronoid process and a condylar process drawn backwards. Dwarf flying squirrels on the other hand, have an elongated coronoid process and a well-differentiated condylar process. To interpret such a difference, Elliptic Fourier Transform was used to evaluate how mandible shape varies with dwarfism in sciurids. The results obtained show that this clear-cut difference cannot be explained by a simple a

Histological and serological evidence of experimental paracoccidioidomycosis in Calomys callosus (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

The responses of animal experimental models related to the infectivity, virulence and pathogenicity of Paracoccidioides brasiliensis is constantly used to develop new perspectives of investigation. The rodent Calomys callosus, Rengger 1830 (Rodentia: Cricetidae) is an indigenous inhabitant of the savannah environment found in the central regions of Brazil. The aim of the present work was to evaluate the histopathological and serological features of C. callosus after inoculation with the Pb18 strain of P. brasiliensis. Furthermore, A/Sn and B10.A mice strains were also tested to compare the res…

Morphological diversity of dental and mandibular deformities in Microtus hartingi (Rodentia, Arvicolinae).

We analyzed 104 labial and lingual projections of Harting's vole (Microtus hartingi) mandibles using linear and geometric morphometrics. Incisor and molar overgrowth and mandibular deformations were described in 2 Harting's vole populations. Over a 6-year research period, excessive incisor growth was observed in 15.4% of the Rhodopean M. hartingi population and in 10.3% of the Central Anatolian form M. h. ankaraensis. Maxillary incisors lengthening up to 2.3× the norm was noted, often accompanied by mandibular incisor shortening. Nevertheless, voles with overgrown incisors were able to feed an

Cross-Sectional Geometry and Scaling in the Baculum of Cuban Hutias (Rodentia: Capromyidae).

Bacula from 61 individual hutia (Rodentia) from five species were studied. The purpose was to investigate cross-sectional geometry as an indicator of mechanical behavior in order to answer questions around the origin and maintenance of the mammalian baculum. From images of the apical and basal cross sections, the following variables were calculated: perimeter, cross-sectional area, maximum second moment of area, and polar moment. An allometric analysis showed that these variables were related to body size. The orientation of the maximum second moment of area was analyzed by means of circular s…

Locomotory adaptations in entoptychine gophers (Rodentia: Geomyidae) and the mosaic evolution of fossoriality.

Pocket gophers (family Geomyidae) are the dominant burrowing rodents in North America today. Their fossil record is also incredibly rich; in particular, entoptychine gophers, a diverse extinct subfamily of the Geomyidae, are known from countless teeth and jaws from Oligocene and Miocene-aged deposits of the western United States and Mexico. Their postcranial remains, however, are much rarer and little studied. Yet, they offer the opportunity to investigate the locomotion of fossil gophers, shed light on the evolution of fossoriality, and enable ecomorphological comparisons with contemporaneous

The comparative gastrointestinal morphology of Jaculus jaculus (Rodentia) and Paraechinus aethiopicus (Erinaceomorpha).

Jaculus jaculus (Lesser Egyptian jerboa) and Paraechinus aethiopicus (Desert hedgehog) are small mammals which thrive in desert conditions and are found, among others, in the Arabian Peninsula. Jaculus jaculus is omnivorous while P. aethiopicus is described as being insectivorous. The study aims to describe the gastrointestinal tract (GIT) morphology of these animals which differ in diet and phylogeny. The GITs of J. jaculus (n = 8) and P. aethiopicus (n = 7) were weighed, photographed, and the length, basal surface areas, and luminal surface areas of each of the anatomically distinct gastroin

Cryptococcus neoformans in the respiratory tract of squirrels, Callosciurus finlaysonii (Rodentia, Sciuridae).

Cryptococcosis is a fungal disease acquired from the environment, for which animals may serve as sentinels for human exposure. The occurrence of Cryptococcus spp. in the respiratory tract of 125 squirrels, Callosciurus finlaysonii, trapped in Southern Italy, was assessed. Upon examination of nasal swabs and lung tissue from each individual, a total of 13 (10.4%) animals scored positive for yeasts, 7 for Cryptococcus neoformans (C.n.) (5.6%) and 6 for other yeasts (4.8%). C.n. was isolated from the nostrils and lungs, with a high population size in nostrils. Two C.n. molecular types, VNI and VN

Azithromycin inhibits vertical transmission of Toxoplasma gondii in Calomys callosus (Rodentia: Cricetidae).

Toxoplasma gondii infection during pregnancy may cause severe consequences to the embryo. Current toxoplasmosis treatment for pregnant women is based on the administration of spiramycin or a drug combination as sulphadiazine-pyrimethamine-folinic acid (SPFA) in cases of confirmed fetal infection. However, these drugs are few tolerated and present many disadvantages due to their toxic effects to the host. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of different treatments on the vertical transmission of T. gondii, including azithromycin, Artemisia annua infusion, spiramycin and SPFA

Acquired and congenital ocular toxoplasmosis experimentally induced in Calomys callosus (Rodentia, Cricetidae).

An experimental model for acquired and congenital ocular toxoplasmosis as well as a model to induce experimental autoimmune uveitis (EAU) was investigated in Calomys callosus. Toxoplasma gondii, ME-49 strain, was used to infect males and pregnant- and not pregnant-females while S-antigen, a major glycoprotein of the retinal photoreceptor cell, was used to induce EAU. The ocular lesions elicited by T. gondii were characterized by the presence of cysts, free tachyzoites and inflammatory cells in the retina or related tissues. In the congenital form, 40% of the fetus presented ocular lesions, i.e

[Wild rodents as experimental models of schistosomiasis mansoni: Akodon arviculoides (Rodentia: Cricetidae)].

The experimental infection of A. arviculoides through different routes of penetration of Schistosoma mansoni cercariae (Transcutaneous and subcutaneous) was studied by the kinetics of egg elimination in stools, by the recovery and localization of adult worms (in the portal system and the mesenteric veins) and through the quantitative egg count. It was shown that A. arviculoides infection is similar to the albino mice which served as control in relation to the efficiency of penetration routes, to the adult worms habitat and the egg count. These results suggest that other aspects of the host-par

Complete mitochondrial genome analyzes of four gerbil species (Rodentia: Gerbillinae) distributed in Türkiye.

BACKGROUND: The genus Meriones Illiger, 1811 is widely distributed in the Middle East, Northern Africa, and Central Asia. In spite of many studies evaluating the gerbil phylogeny, the systematics of this genus is controversial because studies analyzing a single gene region yield inconsistent results. The presented research provides the first complete mitogenomes of four gerbil species (Meriones crassus, Meriones persicus, Meriones tristrami, and Meriones vinogradovi) distributed in Türkiye and novel and strong results to clarify the phylogenetic relationships of these gerbils. METHODS: Next G

Mite composition in nests of the Japanese wood mouse, Apodemus speciosus (Rodentia: Muridae).

Acari is a diverse group of arthropods that include well-known parasites of animals. Rodents, particularly, serve as common hosts of mites and ticks, transmitting pathogens to domestic animals and humans. Understanding the ecological dynamics between parasites and rodent hosts is crucial for ecosystem management. Due to limited knowledge about the life history of ectoparasites in wild mouse nests, we collected four nests of Apodemus speciosus, the most common rodent species in the wild areas of Japan, along with soil samples near the nests to study arthropod communities. Mites overwhelmingly p

Akodon molinae (Rodentia Cricetidae), a new laboratory animal: breeding, management and reproductive performance.

Akodon molinae, a vole mouse widely distributed in central Argentina, shows remarkable chromosome polymorphisms. It is one of the natural reservoirs of the aetiologic agent of haemorrhagic fever, and a laboratory colony could be of great help in investigating this disease. Pregnancy lasted 23 (range 21-25) days. Litters of 4-5 young were born to monogamous breeding pairs about every 30 days, with weaning at 26 days post partum. The sex ratio at birth was 505 males to 500 females: at weaning it was 460 to 440. Sexual maturity was attained at about 16 weeks of age in males and 12-20 weeks in fem

Robertsonian Translocation Rob(13;19) Identified in Guinea Pig (Cavia porcellus, Rodentia).

INTRODUCTION: The domestic guinea pig (Cavia porcellus, Caviidae) is an important laboratory species, model for human medical research, worldwide spread pet and a source of food in specific parts of South America. Data on chromosomal abnormalities in guinea pigs are really limited, probably due to the complexity of their karyotype (2n = 64). METHODS: G- and C-banding and fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) using human chromosome-specific painting probes were used to analyze the karyotype and identify chromosomes involved in a newly discovered Robertsonian translocation. RESULTS: Karyot
