Subcutaneous emphysema during root canal therapy: endodontic accident by sodium hypoclorite.

INTRODUCTION: Cervicofacial subcutaneous emphysema is defined as the abnormal introduction of air in the subcutaneous tissues of the head and neck. It is mainly caused by trauma, head and neck surgery, general anesthesia, and coughing or habitual performance of Valsalva manoeuvre. The occurrence of subcutaneous emphysema after dental treatment is rare, and diffusion of gas into the mediastinum is much rarer, especially when the procedure is a nonsurgical treatment. Presented here is a case of subcutaneous emphysema that occurred after sodium hypochlorite irrigation during endodontic treatment,

Phage therapy against Enterococcus faecalis in dental root canals.

Antibiotic resistance is an ever-growing problem faced by all major sectors of health care, including dentistry. Recurrent infections related to multidrug-resistant bacteria such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, carbapenem-resistant Enterobacteriaceae, and vancomycin-resistant enterococci (VRE) in hospitals are untreatable and question the effectiveness of notable drugs. Two major reasons for these recurrent infections are acquired antibiotic resistance genes and biofilm formation. None of the traditionally known effective techniques have been able to efficiently resolve these i

Combined effects of photodynamic therapy and irrigants in disinfection of root canals.

In this study, the combined effects of photodynamic therapy and irrigants in eradicating common endodontic pathogens are evaluated. Roots of 80 extracted single rooted teeth are divided into 2 groups (1) mechanical flushing; (2) antibacterial irrigation. After cleaning and shaping, they are inoculated with either (A) Streptococcus mutans or (B) Enterococcus faecalis and incubated. They are again subdivided and either only irrigated or irrigated and lased. Dentin shavings are taken from root canal walls and cultured. Statistical analysis using One-Way ANOVA and Post-hoc tests are done. The comb

Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve as the result of root canal therapy.

BACKGROUND: Endodontic treatment of mandibular molar teeth has the potential to damage the inferior alveolar nerve via direct trauma, pressure or neurotoxicity. METHODS: The author reviewed all cases of involvement of the inferior alveolar nerve resulting from root canal therapy in patients seen in a tertiary referral center during an eight-year period (1998 through 2005). The author had encouraged practitioners to refer patients immediately to a university clinic. RESULTS: The author saw 61 patients during the eight-year period. Eight patients were asymptomatic and received no treatment. Fo…

Management of a Complex Crown-Root Fracture in a Single Appointment Through Root Canal Therapy and Rebonding.

A 10-year-old male presented with a mobile and fractured maxillary right central incisor following dental trauma. Clinical and radiographic examinations revealed a chisel-type crown-root fracture with supragingival labial and subgingival palatal extensions. A direct crown reattachment was planned, emphasizing biological width preservation. After removing the coronal fragment, endodontic treatment was performed using a rotary file system and was obturated with a bioceramic sealer. A fiber post was selected and integrated into the fractured fragment, which was reattached using resin cement. Addi

Effect of Root Canal Therapy on the Success Rate of Teeth with Complete Roots in Autogenous Tooth Transplantation.

BACKGROUND: Autogenous tooth transplantation is a reliable method for repairing missing teeth. Although it recently became a recognized and feasible treatment method in dentistry, the long-term efficacy of root canal therapy (RCT) has not been well confirmed. This study is aimed at determining whether RCT has a good effect on the success rate of teeth with complete roots in autogenous tooth transplantation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were collected from the Korea University Guro Hospital. Data of patients who underwent autogenous tooth transplantation within 9 years were collected. We select…

Postoperative pain after the removal of root canal filling material using different techniques in teeth with failed root canal therapy: a randomized clinical trial.

OBJECTIVES: This study evaluated the intensity and duration of postoperative pain after the removal of root canal filling material in retreatment procedures of upper incisor teeth with chronic apical periodontitis, using different techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: One hundred and thirty-five patients requiring retreatment of upper incisor teeth with chronic apical periodontitis were included in the study. The patients were assigned to three groups of 45 patients, according to the method used to remove old canal filling material. In group 1, canal filling material was removed using hand files

[Expert consensus on difficulty assessment of root canal therapy and clinical application].

Root canal therapy (RCT) is one of the most effective treatments for pulp and periradicular diseases. Its primary goals are to eliminate the infectious sources within the root canal system, cure the disease, and preserve the natural teeth. The therapeutic outcomes of RCT are influenced by multiple factors, including the patient's systemic health, tooth position, root canal anatomy, severity of infection, and the choice of instruments and treatment techniques. Establishing a difficulty assessment standard for RCT based on the anatomical characteristics of the Chinese root canal systems is cruci…

Chemical Gastroenterocolitis after Dental Root Canal Therapy with Camphorated and Mentholated Chlorophenol.

A 78-year-old man with a history of pancolitis, after the treatment of dental abscess with oral antibiotics and local application of camphorated and mentholated chlorophenol (CMCP), presented with abdominal pain of 4-day duration, as well as hair loss in the area of moustache and finger nail lifting. He was already treated with rectal application of budesonide because of pancolitis, diagnosed 6 weeks ago and interpreted as an allergic reaction to clindamycin. For further investigation, we performed gastroscopy and colonoscopy, which showed the edematous mucosa with polypus-like changes of the

The Health Education During Root Canal Therapy Reduces the Use of Antibiotics.

Although antibiotics can effectively control infectious diseases, overuse of antibiotics can cause problems such as drug resistance. Pulpitis and apical periodontitis are among the most common infectious diseases in humans. To alleviate the intense tooth pain, patients often self-administer antibiotics. To guide patients in managing pulpitis and apical periodontitis more effectively, we designed a Root Canal Treatment Health Education Form and provided personalised guidance on antibiotic use during the treatment period. From January 2024 to March 2025, a total of 272 patients participated in t

Predicting severe pain after root canal therapy in the National Dental PBRN.

Some patients experience severe pain following root canal therapy (RCT) despite advancements in care. We sought to identify factors, which can be measured preoperatively, that predict this negative outcome so that future research may focus on preemptive steps to reduce postoperative pain intensity. Sixty-two practitioners (46 general dentists and 16 endodontists) who are members of the National Dental Practice-Based Research Network enrolled patients receiving RCT for this prospective observational study. Baseline data collected from patients and dentists were obtained before treatment. Severe…

A clinical trial of pulpotomy vs. root canal therapy of mature molars.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Root canal therapy (RCT) and tooth extraction are the main treatment options for irreversible pulpitis or its sequelae. Pulpotomy is an alternative treatment; however, more evidence is required. If outcomes of pulpotomy with a calcium-enriched mixture (PCEM) are non-inferior for mature molars with irreversible pulpitis compared with those from one-visit RCT (ORCT), this may be a beneficial treatment option. Four hundred seven individuals met the inclusion criteria and were randomly allocated [PCEM (n = 205), ORCT (n = 202)]. We used NRS questionnaires to record pain intensity. Six-month clinic…
