Mouse red cell (MRC) rosette formation was studied in 20 malignant haemopathies. Only cells from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia (CLL) and hairy cell leukaemia (HCL) formed MRC rosettes with a high frequency. However, cells from 2 cases of CLL could not be demonstrated to form MRC rosettes, although they were undoubtedly found to be of B origin. These 2 cases presented as typical CLL, but they were observed to transform into a sarcomatous type after 5-6 months of evolution, suggesting that the study of MRC rosette formation might be of prognostic value in CLL.

This is a case report of rosette formation in non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in the bone marrow. A 66 year old female on treatment for metastatic papillary carcinoma thyroid and non-Hodgkin's lymphoma of the nodular small cleaved cell type was found to have bone marrow infiltration by a low grade B cell lymphoma. Bone marrow aspirate, imprint and trephine biopsy showed rosettes of the abnormal lymphoid cells. The associations of papillary carcinoma thyroid, hyperglobulinemia and retroperitoneal fibrosis in this case which explain the histogenesis of rosette formation are discussed.

The results from this study suggest that the large nul cell lymphocyte population seen in patients with Shigella dysentery, does contain a sub-population of cells that will respond in vitro to thymopoietin, a bovine thymic extract, by increased E-rosette formation. Circulating immune complexes were investigated by the E.A. and E.A.C. rosette inhibition test in sera samples from patients infested by Schistosoma haematobium. About 60% of the patients demonstrated significantly higher inhibition values than controls. The material inhibiting E.A.C. rosette formation was precipitated by 3.5% polyethilene glycol, thus excluding the role of C3 fragments and suggesting that inhibition was due to immune complexes.

Mesenchymal-to-epithelial transitions are essential for epithelial tissue formation and thus the development of functional organs. 200 patients suspected for tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) were examined by the method of the indirect immune rosette-formation test. In 70.15% of patients with the serologically confirmed diagnosis of TBE immune lymphocytes were detected as early as on day 1 of examination. The level of rosette formation was higher in the meningeal form of the disease. Rosette-forming lymphocytes were also detected in 24.06% of patients with the serologically unconfirmed diagnosis of TBE. The test is proposed for the early diagnosis of TBE.

Mouse-rosette formation was investigated in a variety of leukaemias and lymphomas, and it was found that this phenomenon was restricted to the B lymphocytes of chronic lymphocytic leukaemia and hairy-cell leukaemia. In all patients with acute infectious hepatitis and toxic hepatic lesions a characteristic phenomenon is observed: the appearance of modified red blood cells detected by the rosette-formation test. This phenomenon is absent in cholelithiasis patients and thus can be used as an additional clinico-laboratory test for differentiating hepatogenous and nonhepatogenous jaundices. The appearance of modified red blood cells is the result of the effect produced on their membranes by the serum factor whose activity is suppressed by protease trasilol, a polyvalent inhibiting agent.
