Saccadic omission revisited: What saccade-induced smear looks like.

During active visual exploration, saccadic eye movements rapidly shift the visual image across the human retina. Although these high-speed s … e courses throughout the saccade, indicating that generation and reduction of smear occurred during saccades. Moreover, low spatial frequencies and orientations parallel to the direction of the ongoing saccade were identified as the predominant visual features accessible in motion smear. We explain these findings using computational models that assume no m …

Saccadic lateropulsion in Wallenberg syndrome: a window to access cerebellar control of saccades?

Saccadic lateropulsion is characterized by an undershoot of contralaterally directed saccades, an overshoot of ipsilaterally directed saccades and an ipsilateral deviation of vertical saccades. In Wallenberg syndrome, it is thought to result from altered signals in the olivo-cerebellar pathway to the oculomotor cerebellar network. In the current study we aimed to determine whether saccadic lateropulsion results from a cerebellar impairment of motor related signals or visuo-spatial related signals. We studied the trajectory, the accuracy, the direction and the amplitude of a variety of vertical…

Nystagmus and Saccadic Intrusions.

OBJECTIVE: This article describes the diagnosis and differentiation of the many possible localizations and causes of nystagmus. LATEST DEVELOPMENTS: The eyes move to keep the fovea on the object of visual regard. To account for the movement of targets, the environment, or the self, different classes of eye movement are necessary to achieve visual stability. These movements involve the vergence, smooth pursuit, saccadic, vestibular, and optokinetic systems, as well as the ability to suppress the vestibuloocular reflex and other movements for steady fixation. When the equipoise of one or more o

What stops a saccade?

Rapid movements to a target are ballistic; they usually do not last long enough for visual feedback about errors to influence them. Yet, the brain is not simply precomputing movement trajectory. Classical models of movement control involve a feedback loop that subtracts 'where we are now' from 'where we want to be'. That difference is an internal motor error. The feedback loop reduces this error until it reaches zero, stopping the movement. However, neurophysiological studies have shown that movements controlled by the cerebrum (e.g. arm and head movements) and those controlled by the brain st

Saccades during visual search in macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration (MD) compromises both high-acuity vision and eye movements when the foveal regions of both eyes are affected. Individua … . An analysis of saccade characteristics showed that individuals with binocular scotomata made more saccades in the direction of their scotoma than controls for the same directions. Saccades in the direction of the scotoma were typically of small amplitude, and did not fully uncover the region previously hidden by the scotoma. Rather than make more saccade …

An internal clock generates repetitive predictive saccades.

Previously we demonstrated the presence of a behavioral phase transition between reactive and predictive eye tracking of alternating targets. Prior studies of repetitive movements have proposed that an "internal clock" is the neural mechanism by which interval timing is achieved. In the present report we tested whether predictive oculomotor (saccade) tracking is based on an internal time reference (clock) by examining the effect of transient perturbations to the periodic pacing stimulus. These perturbations consisted of altering the timing of the stimulus (abruptly increasing or decreasing the

Cerebellar activation during optokinetic stimulation and saccades.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the activation pattern of cerebellar structures during small-field optokinetic stimulation (OKN) by functional MRI (fMRI) and compare it with that obtained during voluntary saccades and fixation suppression of OKN. METHODS: Functional images were acquired from oblique transverse slices of eight healthy, right-handed volunteers using a radio frequency-spoiled, single-slice, fast low-angle shot (FLASH) pulse sequence with high-spatial resolution. RESULTS: Horizontal OKN and saccades were associated with bilateral activity in the cerebellar hemispheres (superior semilu…

Saccade initiation and the reliability of motor signals involved in the generation of saccadic eye movements.

We examined the trial-by-trial relationship between the metrics of saccadic eye movements and the activity of individual putative premotor neurons in the paramedian pontine reticular formation (PPRF) of rhesus monkeys. The region of the pons containing these excitatory burst neurons (EBNs) extends for several millimetres. Motoneurons innervating extraocular muscles integrate the output of hundreds or even thousands of these neurons. Accordingly, there was no reason to expect that relatively small variations in the activity of a single pontine neuron would be related to variations in saccade am

Ictal Lid Movements: Blinks and Lid Saccades.

Two types of lid movements, blinks and lid saccades, have discrete kinematic properties and physiology. These differences are reflected in distinct phenomenology of disorders affecting their neural substrate. Proof of this principle was seen in two patients, one with parietal lobe epilepsy and the other with temporal lobe epilepsy. The lid movements in the patient with parietal lobe epilepsy were rhythmic, yoked, and had a rapid upward component that instantaneously followed a slow downward drift. These cyclic movements strikingly resembled nystagmus, but unlike typical eye nystagmus, the rapi…

How cerebellar motor learning keeps saccades accurate.

The neuronal substrate underlying the learning of a sophisticated task has been difficult to study. However, the advent of a behavioral paradigm that deceives the saccadic system into thinking it is making an error has allowed the mechanisms of the adaptation that corrects this error to be revealed in a primate. The neural elements that fashion the command signal for the generation of accurate saccades involve subcortical structures in the brain stem and cerebellum. In this review we show that sites in both those structures also are involved with the gradual adaptation of saccade size, a form …

[Corrective saccades in patients with multiple sclerosis].

Basing on the data analysis of natural and erroneous fast eye movements, the quantitative estimation of static and dynamic features of corrective saccades in patients with multiple sclerosis has been carried out. The differences in latency, maximal velocity and other parameters of corrective movements are used in the discussion of brain strategies on the development of normal and corrective eye movements and neuronal pathways for their realization.

Vergence control across saccades in dyslexic adults.

Many aspects of vision have been investigated in developmental dyslexia. Some research suggests deficits in vergence control (e.g. Buzzelli, 1991, Optom. Vision Sci. 68, 842-846), although ability to control vergence across saccades has not yet been investigated. We have explored this question indirectly using Enright's (1996 Vision Res. 36, 307-312.) sequential stereopsis task. The task requires observers to set two adjacent targets (whose textures cannot be resolved simultaneously if either is fixated) to appear equi-distant. Enright has argued that sequential stereopsis stereoacuity thresho…

Saccades in Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome.

Gilles de la Tourette's syndrome (GTS) is presumed to be an inherited disorder with an unclear pathophysiology. An involvement of the basal ganglia is suspected. Besides vocal tics, one of the main symptoms is the presence of motor tics. As eye movements are a specialized part of the motor system, we investigated whether they differed in some typical way in GTS patients. To study the control of saccades in GTS, different paradigms were used to elicit saccades, which were either externally triggered and visually guided or internally triggered and without visual target. GTS patients (n = 10) sho…

Internuclear ophthalmoplegia. I. Saccades and dissociated nystagmus.

Saccades (horizontal and vertical) and dissociated nystagmus were quantitatively assessed in four patients with internuclear ophthalmoplegia. Two patients had bilateral medial longitudinal fasciculus (MLF) lesions associated with multiple sclerosis and two had unilateral lesions associated with brain stem vascular disease. Adducting saccades made on the side of an MLF lesion were slowed in each patient (P less than .01). At the same time, abducting saccades in the contralateral eye had normal velocity, but consistently overshot the target. After the overshoot, the eye returned to the target wi…
