Phlebotomine sand flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) and sand fly-borne pathogens in the Greater Mekong Subregion: a systematic review.

Phlebotomine sand flies are proven or suspected vectors of several pathogens of importance, including leishmaniasis, bartonellosis and sand fly fevers. Although sand flies have a worldwide distribution, there has been limited research published on sand flies and sand fly-borne pathogens throughout the Greater Mekong Sub-region (GMS). This review followed the PRISMA guidelines to determine the biodiversity and presence of phlebotomine sand flies and their associated pathogens in the GMS, specifically Cambodia, Thailand, the Lao People's Democratic Republic (Laos), Malaysia and Vietnam. [Suffocation death by occlusion of the airways with sand].

Eleven cases are reported in which death occurred because of suffocation as a result of occlusion of the respiratory tract by sand (without thoracic compression: 3 cases) or being buried alive (8 cases). Two tables demonstrate the findings and circumstances in the events. Three cases are described in detail. A 22-year-old woman was manhandled by blows and kicks to the head and neck. She became unconscious and her head and neck were covered by a layer of sand so that she suffocated. A 42-year-old man was smothered, while unconscious, in a prone position with his face in the sand, after hard blo

Microbial Characterization of Qatari Barchan Sand Dunes.

This study represents the first characterization of sand microbiota in migrating barchan sand dunes. Bacterial communities were studied through direct counts and cultivation, as well as 16S rRNA gene and metagenomic sequence analysis to gain an understanding of microbial abundance, diversity, and potential metabolic capabilities. Direct on-grain cell counts gave an average of 5.3 ± 0.4 x 105 cells g-1 of sand. Cultured isolates (N = 64) selected for 16S rRNA gene sequencing belonged to the phyla Actinobacteria (58%), Firmicutes (27%) and Proteobacteria (15%). Deep-sequencing of 16S rRNA gene a

Morbidity assessment in sand flea disease (tungiasis).

Tungiasis, caused by the sand flea Tunga penetrans, is a health problem in many impoverished communities in Latin America, the Caribbean, and sub-Saharan Africa. Sand flea disease is associated with a broad spectrum of clinical and histological pathology. The factors determining the disease burden in endemic communities are not well understood, and severity of clinical pathology has never been assessed quantitatively. Thus, two severity scores were developed: one for acute disease and one for chronic sequels. These scores were evaluated in a cohort of 70 severely infested patients living in a

Foundry air contaminants from green sand molds.

The major gases evolved from foundry molds have been determined in the laboratory. The principal gases evolved during pouring and shakeout of castings include hydrogen, carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, methane and other low molecular weight hydrocarbons with smaller amounts of ammonia, hydrogen cyanide, and sulfur dioxide.

Kinetic sand! A tale of sandy times.

Kinetic magnetic sand, composed of ultra-fine sand and dimethicone in a 98%-2% ratio, is a versatile sensory toy known for its moldable properties and structural stability (1). Despite the name, it lacks actual magnetic features. Ingesting kinetic sand can pose risks, including choking and gastrointestinal issues, especially in young children. This case report details a unique incident involving a 3-year-old who ingested a significant amount of kinetic sand. Although the sand's ingredients are generally hypoallergenic and nontoxic, its grainy texture presented challenges for retrieval. The pat

Efficiency of a Combination of Polyethylene Glycol and Psyllium on the Evacuation of Sand Compared to Established Treatment Regimes in Sand Enteropathy of the Horse.

The accumulation of sand in the abdomen is a rising risk for colic in horses. Sand mainly accumulates in the ascending colon in the cranioventral abdomen. Evacuation of sand is facilitated by the application of psyllium supported with a laxative via nasogastric intubation. Laxatives currently used are either sodium sulfate/magnesium sulfate or mineral oil. The aim of this study was to compare the efficiency of polyethylene glycol, a laxative already used in human medicine for chronic constipation, with that of the above-described, established therapy options. Therefore, 44 horses diagnosed wit

Bartonella spp. in Phlebotominae Sand Flies, Brazil.

Bartonella spp. are opportunistic, vectorborne bacteria that can cause disease in both animals and humans. We investigated the molecular occurrence of Bartonella spp. in 634 phlebotomine sand fly specimens, belonging to 44 different sand fly species, sampled during 2017-2021 in north and northeastern Brazil. We detected Bartonella sp. DNA in 8.7% (55/634) of the specimens by using a quantitative real-time PCR targeting the 16S-23S internal transcribed spacer intergenic region. Phylogenetic analysis positioned the Lutzomyia longipalpis sand fly-associated Bartonella gltA gene sequence in the sa

Adaptation to life in aeolian sand: how the sandfish lizard, Scincus scincus, prevents sand particles from entering its lungs.

The sandfish lizard, Scincus scincus (Squamata: Scincidae), spends nearly its whole life in aeolian sand and only comes to the surface for foraging, defecating and mating. It is not yet understood how the animal can respire without sand particles entering its respiratory organs when buried under thick layers of sand. In this work, we integrated biological studies, computational calculations and physical experiments to understand this phenomenon. We present a 3D model of the upper respiratory system based on a detailed histological analysis. A 3D-printed version of this model was used in combin

Increased Transmissibility of Leishmania donovani From the Mammalian Host to Vector Sand Flies After Multiple Exposures to Sand Fly Bites.

BACKGROUND: Patients with active visceral leishmaniasis are important reservoirs in the anthroponotic transmission cycle of Leishmania donovani. The role of the blood or skin as a source of infection to sand flies remains unclear, and the possible effect of multiple exposures to fly bites on transmissibility has not been addressed. METHODS: L. donovani-infected hamsters underwent xenodiagnoses with Lutzomyia longipalpis on the same or different sites on the abdomen on 2 consecutive days or by artificial feeding on the skin or blood. RESULTS: The transmission of L. donovani from sick hamsters

Leishmaniasis and phlebotomine sand flies in Oman Sultanate.

There are few data on leishmaniases and sandflies in Oman Sultanate. We carried out an eco-epidemiological study in 1998 in the two main mountains of the country, the Sharqiyah and the Dhofar. This study allowed us to isolate and identify three Leishmania strains from patients exhibiting cutaneous leishmaniasis. The typing carried out by isoenzymatic study and by molecular biology were congruent: two strains of Leishmania donovani zymodeme (Z) MON-31 isolated in the Sharqiyah and one L. tropica ZROM102 (ZMON-39 variant for 4 isoenzymes) from the Dhofar. No strain was isolated from canids. The

Airborne Asian sand dust enhances murine lung eosinophilia.

There is no experimental study demonstrating the effects of airborne Asian sand dust (AASD) on allergic lung eosinophilia. The organic substances adsorbed onto AASD collected from the atmosphere of Iki-island in Japan were excluded by heat treatment at 360°C for 30 min. The effects of AASD or heated-AASD (H-AASD) towards allergic lung inflammation were compared in murine lungs to investigate the role of organic substances. ICR mice were administrated with the two kinds of AASD and/or ovalbumin (OVA) intratracheally four times at 2-week intervals. AASD and H-AASD enhanced eosinophil recruitment

Sand fly species of Sanliurfa province in Turkey.

The species composition and seasonal abundance of sand flies (Diptera: Phlebotominae) were studied in the years 2000-2002 in the Sanliurfa region, which is the largest focus of cutaneous leishmaniasis in south-eastern Turkey. Sixteen species were identified among 29 771 specimens collected at 17 different sites by light traps, sticky papers and aspirators. The most common species were Phlebotomus papatasi (Scopoli) (45.4%), P. perfiliewi Parrot (21.9%), and P. sergenti Parrot (19.4%). The other species found were P. major Adler & Theodor (3%), P. neglectus Leger & Pesson (2.2%), P. brevis Theo

Functional implications of ear loss in sand lizards.

Despite being a highly advantageous trait, tympanic hearing was secondarily lost multiple times within tetrapods. Typically, loss of a sensory structure implies a shift to new environments where selection for another trait inhibits the development of said sensory structure, or a relaxation of selection on the sensory organ. However, the loss of tympanic hearing within North American sand lizards (Phrynosomatidae: Callisaurini) has eluded explanation. To explore the evolutionary reduction and loss of tympanic hearing within this clade, we created 3D models of the stapes to analyze morphological
