This paper reports the reading scores measured on Neale's Analysis of Reading Ability of a series of 55 spina bifida children, some of whom attended normal schools and the remainder attended special schools and matched controls. A multiple regression equation was used to compare observed scores with the expected scores. San Diego is located within the geographic distribution of known occurrence of Coccidioides immitis contamination of the soil. Forty-five to fifty-five cases are diagnosed in San Diego hospitals each year. Skin tests were administered to one thousand and twenty-seven ninth grade students in five selected San Diego schools. When followed-up at 6 years, 62 of a cohort of 155 spina bifida children had been placed in ordinary schools. The children's handicaps were relatively mild overall, and placements were generally successful.
