Redefining transition: Self-efficacy in urologic care.

Advances in pediatric urology have transformed once fatal, congenital anomalies into chronic, manageable conditions, creating a growing population of adults living with childhood-onset urologic disorders. Despite international transition initiatives, most readiness tools emphasize task completion rather than the acquisition of confidence, motivation, and adaptability required for sustained self-management. This review integrates evidence from behavioral science to propose an enhanced, self-efficacy-driven approach to transitional urology. Drawing on established health behavior change models in

Targeted dream incubation and dream self-efficacy.

This preliminary study investigates the potential for a technique that enables purposeful guiding of dream content (Targeted Dream Incubation; TDI) to change the degree to which an individual feels in control of their dreams (Dream Self-Efficacy; DSE). DSE is a subset of a larger concept of self-efficacy relating to one's belief in their own abilities and competencies. Examining DSE may be quite important, as past research has demonstrated that DSE may be linked to positive treatment outcomes in specific therapies, such as interventions for trauma-related nightmares. Furthermore, prior researc

Etching Efficacy of Self-Etching Functional Monomers.

Besides chemically interacting with hard tooth tissue, acidic functional monomers of self-etch adhesives should etch the prepared tooth surface to dissolve the smear layer and to provide surface micro-retention. Although the etching efficacy of functional monomers is commonly determined in terms of pH, the pH of adhesives cannot accurately be measured. Better is to measure the hydroxyapatite (HAp)-dissolving capacity, also considering that functional monomers may form monomer-Ca salts. Here, the etching efficacy of 6 functional monomers (GPDM, phenyl-P, MTEGP, 4-META, 6-MHP and 10-MDP) was inv

Self-Efficacy Measured Through the Italian Diabetes Management Self-Efficacy Scale (IT-DMSES) in Individuals with Type 2 Diabetes.

Background: Obesity and Binge Eating Disorder (BED) are common comorbidities in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), often complicating disease management. Self-efficacy-the belief in one's ability to manage diabetes-has been shown to influence self-care behaviours and outcomes. This study aimed to assess diabetes management self-efficacy among adults with obesity and T2DM undergoing multidisciplinary rehabilitation, focusing on the impact of BMI, BED, and gender. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 137 adults (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m2) with T2DM admitted to a residential rehabilitation cent

Cardiovascular reactivity to acute psychological stress is associated with generalized self-efficacy and self-efficacy outcomes during adventure challenges.

Outdoor adventure challenges are commonly used to enhance self-efficacy, but the physiological mechanisms involved remain unexplored. Additionally, while studies have documented the influence of self-efficacy on stress management, general self-efficacy has yet to be fully understood in the context of cardiovascular stress reactivity (CVR). This study investigated the influence of self-efficacy beliefs on CVR during acute psychological stress tasks. Additionally, it explored whether CVR serves as a novel mechanism underlying the outcomes of outdoor adventure challenges. As part of a wider rando

Temporal Associations Between Social Identification, Relation-Inferred Self-Efficacy, and Self-Efficacy: A Random Intercept Cross-Lagged Panel Model.

This study aimed to investigate the directionality and reciprocal relationships among social identification, self-efficacy, and relation-inferred self-efficacy (RISE) in runners using a random-intercept cross-lagged panel model. A sample of 350 runners completed surveys at three time points over 2 months. Results revealed a significant cross-lagged effect from self-efficacy at Time 1 to RISE at Time 2, with an indirect effect from self-efficacy at Time 1 to RISE at Time 3 via RISE at Time 2. No cross-lagged effects were found between social identity and efficacy constructs. While social identi

Self-efficacy in chronic illness: the juxtaposition of general and regimen-specific efficacy.

Changes in lifestyle are difficult for most people but necessary for those with a chronic illness, for whom changes may involve, among other adjustments, learning new behaviours and/or modifying one's lifestyle. The ease with which such changes occur depends on the person's efficacy beliefs and outcome expectations. This paper will discuss the conceptual issues related to self-efficacy: general, domain, and specific. Examples will be drawn from the health-related behaviour changes required to manage diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis. For this paper, regimen-specific or task-specific behaviour

Intervention Outcomes, Anxiety, Self-Esteem, and Self-Efficacy With DHH Students in Universities.

This article reports the impact of an online spiritual counseling (OSC) program in mitigating anxiety and building self-esteem and academic self-efficacy among deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students in universities. Compared to online relaxation sessions, the OSC was more effective. Male DHH students and those whose parents were highly qualified exhibited less anxiety and higher self-esteem and self-efficacy at pretest (T1). Post-test (T2) male students having better educated parents responded better to the OSC. T2 anxiety was lower and self-esteem and academic self-efficacy was higher for li

Instruments to assess self-efficacy for symptom self-management by children with cancer and parents.

CONTEXT: School-age children with cancer and their parents must develop self-efficacy to self-manage physical and psychosocial symptoms associated with the child's disease and treatment. Instruments to measure self-efficacy for symptom self-management among children and parents and evaluate interventions to enhance self-efficacy are lacking. OBJECTIVES: We sought to develop and evaluate two instruments: Self-Efficacy for Symptom Self-Management-Child Version (SE-SSM-Child) and Self-Efficacy for Symptom Self-Management-Parent Version (SE-SSM-Parent). METHODS: Phase 1 established content valid

Seasickness as a self-fulfilling prophecy: raising self-efficacy to boost performance at sea.

Applying the self-fulfilling prophecy (SFP) approach to combating seasickness, the authors experimentally augmented the self-efficacy of naval cadets by telling them that they were unlikely to experience seasickness and that, if they did, it was unlikely to affect their performance at sea. Naval cadets (N = 25) in the Israel Defense Forces were randomly assigned to experimental and control conditions. At the end of a 5-day training cruise, experimental cadets reported less seasickness and were rated as better performers by naive training officers than were the control cadets. There was a nonsi

Self-Deception in Addiction Rehabilitation: Impulsivity and Self-Efficacy as Predictors of Manipulation and Mystification.

Substance use disorder (SUD) is a global problem with serious psychological, physiological, and social consequences. Seeking professional help is often delayed due to a lack of self-recognition of addiction, frequently sustained by self-deception. Although self-deception is a core feature of SUD, the mechanisms underlying it remain insufficiently studied. This research examines the role of impulsivity and self-efficacy in predicting self-deceptive behaviors-manipulation and mystification-in individuals undergoing addiction rehabilitation. The sample consisted of 122 Spanish participants from t

The self-efficacy perception in cardiovascular patients: A cohort study on self-care management.

OBJECTIVE: The international cardiovascular guidelines emphasise self-care as a key factor for better health management in patients. Self-care incorporated into patient engagement is considered vital for the patient-provider relationship to alleviate the polipharmacological treatment burden. However, several cardiovascular (CV) patients struggle to adhere to recommendations. The present study aims to address this research gap by exploring the adherence and real-world effectiveness in a CV population. From this perspective, our cohort study attempted to determine self-care ability based on the

The Effect of Shame and Self-Efficacy on Gambling Behaviour.

Previous research has identified the benefits of increasing self-efficacy in problem gamblers, while other research has identified higher levels of shame and dysfunctional coping in problem gamblers. The primary aim of the present study was to examine the relationships between problem gambling behaviour, shame (as both a personality trait and an emotional state), gambling-related self-efficacy, and dysfunctional coping mechanisms. The sample consisted of 235 participants (172 male; mean age = 30.32, SD = 8.57), who completed an online, self-report questionnaire that assessed gambling severity,

Personality and Self-Efficacy for Illness Management in Cancer.

Purpose: Self-efficacy for illness management is increasingly recognized as important for outcomes in cancer. We examined whether the Big Five personality dimensions were associated with self-efficacy for illness management and hypothesized that patients who were less neurotic and more conscientious would have better self-efficacy. Methods: A total of 372 adults with cancer completed a cross-sectional survey that included the Mini-International Personality Item Pool (IPIP) and three subscales of the Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Self-Efficacy for Chronic Con
