PURPOSE: This study explores how individuals living with limb osseointegration (OI) make decisions about their self-management, including how they seek, evaluate, and apply health information.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, ten participants with OI from Canada, the United States, and Australia were interviewed via Zoom. Transcripts were analyzed using constant comparative methods to identify themes and develop a theory of self-management decision-making.
RESULTS: Participants described a multifaceted decision-making process across four stages of their

BACKGROUND: Self-management education programmes are complex interventions specifically targeted at patient education and behaviour modification. They are designed to encourage people with chronic disease to take an active self-management role to supplement medical care and improve outcomes.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the effectiveness of self-management education programmes for people with osteoarthritis.
SEARCH METHODS: The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, EMBASE, PyscINFO, SCOPUS and the World Health Organization (WHO) International Clinical Trial Registry Pla

Living with chronic kidney disease usually involves management of other chronic conditions, such as diabetes or hypertension, and often requires a change in the patient's way of life: medical and emotional aspects of the disease must be handled, symptoms interpreted and reported, partnerships with health care providers forged, and new resources used. Nurses can help patients maneuver this initially frightening and sometimes difficult terrain with strategies tailored to the stage of the disease.

OBJECTIVES: Significant problems with patients engaging with diabetes self-management education (DSME) exist. The role of healthcare professionals (HCPs) has been highlighted, with a lack of enthusiasm, inadequate information provision and poor promotion of available programmes all cited as affecting patients' decisions to attend. However, little is known about HCPs' views towards DSME. This study investigates the views of HCPs towards self-management generally and self-management in the context of DSME more specifically.
DESIGN: A qualitative study using semi-structured interviews to investi

BACKGROUND: Self-management skills can empower a person to manage the physical, psychological, and social impact of a health condition. However, the components of self-management interventions differ widely between studies and interventions. By performing a scoping review, we aimed to describe patients' self-management needs and how health professionals (HPs) can provide effective self-management support to patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA).
OBJECTIVES: 1) to identify the evidence for self-management support needs of patients with IA, and 2) to identify the content (theory/theoretical

PURPOSE: To report on a series of self-embedding behavior (SEB), demonstrate the effectiveness and clinical effect of image-guided foreign body removal (IGFBR) in the treatment of embedded soft-tissue foreign bodies (STFBs), and evaluate the role of the radiologist in the clinical management of SEB.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective study was approved by the institutional review board. From a database of 600 patients treated with IGFBR with ultrasonographic (US) and/or fluoroscopic guidance, self-injury was identified in 11 (1.8%) mainly adolescent patients with a mean age of 16 years

PURPOSE: This study was conducted to examine the changing patterns of knowledge related to disease, medication adherence, and self-management and to determine if outcomes were more favorable in the experimental group than in the comparison group through 6 months after providing a web-based self-management intervention.
METHODS: A non-equivalent control group quasi-experimental design was used and 65 patients with gout, 34 in experimental group and 31 in comparison group, were selected from the rheumatic clinics of two university hospitals. Data were collected four times, at baseline, at 1 mon

AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to address the interrelationships among neurocognition, self-efficacy, motivation and self-management in individuals with schizophrenia.
BACKGROUND: Self-management performance of individuals with schizophrenia is relatively poor. The effect of neurocognitive impairment on self-management in schizophrenia remains inconsistent, which may be attributed to the neglect of possible mediating factors. Little attention has been given to the role of motivation and self-efficacy for linking neurocognition to self-management.
DESIGN: A cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Food hypersensitivity (FH) has received considerable attention in the scientific community in recent years. However, little attention has been given to the efforts people make to manage their FH. We aimed to explore these efforts by using Normalization Process Theory, which is a conceptual framework formerly used to describe the self-management 'work' of long-term conditions.
METHODS: We carried out qualitative individual interviews with 16 women with FH. Transcripts from recorded interviews were analyzed using template analysis.
RESULTS: 16 women participated; some had diagnoses

BACKGROUND: Self-management education has been shown to improve the quality of life of children and young people with chronic illnesses. It has been suggested that self-management education may improve seizure control and other outcomes in children and young people with epilepsy.
OBJECTIVES: To review systematically the research literature on the effectiveness of self-management education in improving health outcomes for children and young people with epilepsy.
SEARCH STRATEGY: We searched the Cochrane Epilepsy Group's Specialised Register (April 2007), MEDLINE (Ovid) (1966 to February 2007)

Self-induced eruptions are always expressions of an emotionally disturbed person. They cover a wide variety of injuries and include aggravation of preexisting dermatoses, neurotic excoriations, mucocutaneous changes from compulsive movements, factitial dermatitis and trichotillomania. The emotional disturbances in such patients range from mild psychoneuroses to severe psychoses. Attention should be focused primarily on the emotional disturbance. The management of psychotic patients is the domain of the psychiatrist. But those unsuitable for psychiatric care and persons with mild psychoneuroses

This overview of successful strategies for supporting self-management in patients with osteoarthritis (OA) defines the concepts of self-management, self-management support (SMS), and self-management education (SME); describes five categories of SMS interventions; identifies common elements across SMS categories; and provides evidence for and examples of self-management tools that are useful in OA. SMS categories include SME, other skill-building and behavior-change interventions, supportive provider interactions, ongoing supportive follow-up, and environmental changes. Where available, relevan

BACKGROUND: Asthma education reimbursement continues to be an issue in the United States. Among the greatest barriers is the lack of a standardized curriculum for asthma self-management education recognized by a physician society, non-physician health care professional society or association, or other appropriate source. The applicable Current Procedural Terminology codes for self-management education and training are 98960 through 98962, stating that "if a practitioner has created a training curriculum for educating patients on management of their medical condition, he or she may employ a non

UNLABELLED: The increasing prevalence of chronic illnesses and kidney disease, in particular, makes it necessary to adopt new approaches towards their management (Wagner, 1998). Evidence suggests that promoting self-management improves the health status of peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients, as they manage upwards of 90% of their own care. Patients who are unable to self-manage suffer from various complications. This project proposes an intervention aimed at improving self-management skills among PD patients.
GOAL: To promote self-management in peritoneal dialysis patients. This is achieved th

Self-management is of increasing importance in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) management. However, there is confusion over what processes are involved, how the value of self-management should be determined, and about the research priorities. To gain more insight into and agreement about the content of programmes, outcomes, and future directions of COPD self-management, a group of interested researchers and physicians, all of whom had previously published on this subject and who had previously collaborated on other projects, convened a workshop. This article summarises their initi

OBJECTIVES: Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a disorder of gut-brain interaction with an unknown precise etiology. Intricate mechanisms underlying the disruption of bidirectional communication between the brain and the gut may influence the severity of symptoms as well as the response to self-management interventions. Management of IBS can be particularly challenging due to recurrent and resistant symptoms to therapeutic approaches. The present study aimed to evaluate the role of nurse-led self-management support on symptom management and self-reported outcomes in people with IBS.
METHODS: I
