Three years after the first cases of urinary schistosomiasis infection were reported in the village of Mbodiene, Senegal, Schistosoma haematobium eggs were found in 87% of the inhabitants of this village; 30% were heavily infected (> 50 eggs per 10 mL urine). The purpose of this report is to describe four cases of nocardiosis observed over an eight-year period in medical units of Principal Hospital in Dakar, Senegal. It is a rare infection occurring mainly in people with weakened immune systems. Pulmonary forms are predominate and clinical and laboratory presentation can mimic pulmonary tuberculosis. Senegal has a high rate of tuberculosis and a low HIV seropositivity rate and aspergilloma, life-threatening fungal infections, dermatophytosis and mycetoma have been reported in this study. All published epidemiology papers reporting fungal infection rates from Senegal were identified. A retrospective study of carcinomas of the hypopharynx was conducted to examine the epidemiological and clinical features of this cancer in Senegal. An analysis of 66 cases showed a very particular distribution in Senegal with more female (57.6%) than male cases. Average age at diagnosis was 33 years. Few data from West Africa are available on the prevalence of the different kidney diseases. One hundred fifteen patients underwent renal biopsy in the nephrology department in Dakar from 1993 to 1998. Nephrotic syndrome was the main indication of biopsy (67%). The primary nephropathies were found in 69.5% of the patients, the secondary nephropathies in 23.5% and unclassified nephropathies in 7%.
