Serositis related to systemic lupus erythematosus: prevalence and outcome.

The objective of this study was to describe the prevalence and outcome of disease-related serositis in Chinese patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). The records of all SLE patients who attended the medical clinics of Tuen Mun Hospital, Hong Kong were retrospectively reviewed. Patients with disease-related serositis at any stage of their illness were identified and the outcome of these serositis episodes was reported. Three-hundred and ten patients (90% women) who fulfilled at least four of the ACR criteria for SLE were studied. The mean age of SLE onset was 32.6 +/- 13.1 years. six…

Egg yolk serositis in an American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis).

An adult female American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) had diffuse, yellow, granular serosal thickening at necropsy. Light microscopic examination of affected stomach, small intestine and spleen revealed a chronic proliferative serositis associated with 3 to 15 micron eosinophilic extracellular globules identified histochemically and morphologically as egg yolk. The intracoelomic egg yolk was considered to be the cause of the serosal reaction.

Tjalma Syndrome: A Rare Autoimmune Cause of Multisystem Serositis.

Tjalma syndrome is a rare manifestation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) characterized by pleural effusion, ascites, and elevated cancer antigen 125 (CA-125) levels in the absence of ovarian malignancy. We report the case of a woman in her 50s who presented with recurrent pleuritic chest pain, dyspnea, peripheral edema, ascites, and constitutional symptoms. Initial investigations were inconclusive, resulting in repeated admissions and multidisciplinary referrals. Subsequent immunological testing confirmed SLE. Given the constellation of serositis and elevated CA-125, a diagnosis of Tjalma…

Idiopathic Recurrent Serositis: A Multispecialty Challenge Resolved With Colchicine.

Idiopathic recurrent serositis (IRS) is a rare and diagnostically challenging condition characterised by recurrent inflammation of serous membranes, occurring without any identifiable infection, malignancy, or autoimmune cause. We present the case of a 32-year-old female who was initially admitted with dyspnoea and a right pleural effusion. Pleural fluid analysis revealed an exudate with negative microbiology, cytology, and tuberculosis testing, and she was treated empirically with antibiotics. Over the following months, the patient developed recurrent symptoms, including progressive abdominal…

Case report: systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) serositis mimicking acute cholecystitis.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a well recognized cause of an acute abdomen. What is less well recognized is that the underlying pathology can be varied. The computed tomography (CT) and ultrasound appearances of the gall-bladder in a case of SLE serositis are shown. The imaging findings were strongly suggestive of primary gall-bladder disease although at laparotomy the gall-bladder showed serosal inflammation only.

Development of a risk-scoring system to evaluate the serosal invasion for macroscopic serosal invasion positive gastric cancer patients.

BACKGROUND: The status of serosal invasion is often discordance between pathological and intraoperative evaluation. Our study sought to develop a risk-scoring system (RSS) to predict the probability of pT4a for macroscopic serosal invasion (MSI) positive patients and reevaluate the serosal invasion status. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 1301 pT3/pT4a gastric cancer patients with curative surgery were reviewed. We constructed the RSS to predict the probability of pT4a and assigned MSI-positive patients into different risk groups based on the risk scores. The prognostic significance of these

A case of erythema nodosum and serositis associated with myelodysplastic syndrome.

Myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) is a heterogenous group of stem cell disorders usually characterized by progressive refractory cytopenias, wh … rheumatoid arthritis and mixed connective tissue disease. However, concurrent erythema nodosum and serositis has rarely been reported. We describe a case of MDS with erythema nodosum and immune-mediated pericardial effusion in a 34-year-old woman.

Hepatitis B virus: a possible cause of serositis in hemodialysis patients.

An epidemiologic survey in a maintenance hemodialysis population of 300 patients was undertaken to relate the appearance of acute serositis (pericarditis, pleuritis or ascites) to HBsAg antigenemia. A significant number of incidents of serositis occurred in patients acutely or chronically infected with hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) suggesting an etiologic role for the virus in the serositis of uremia. In 2 patients with both end-stage renal disease and chronic HBsAg antigenemia, immunofluorescent studies of serosal tissues showed fluorescent clusters interpreted to be HBs antigen-antibod…

Successful laparoscopic management of uterine serosal pregnancy.

Uterine serosal pregnancy is an extremely rare form of ectopic pregnancy. This is a report of a 35-year-old primigravida woman who was diagnosed with uterine serosal pregnancy via laparoscopic intervention. A 35-year-old woman (gravida 1, para 0) was referred from a local clinic for a ruptured left tubal pregnancy at amenorrhea 5+0 weeks with elevated serum beta human chorionic gonadotropin (16,618 mIU/mL). A pregnancy on the left posterior wall of the uterine serosa was diagnosed during the operation and successfully treated with laparoscopic surgery as a conservative management strategy to e

Hyperthyroidism with Peritoneal Serositis Leading to Small Bowel Obstruction: A Case Report.

Cases of small bowel obstruction in the virgin abdomen are rare and can pose diagnostic challenges, especially when associated with endocrinopathy. We present a young woman with uncontrolled Graves' disease who was admitted with a small bowel obstruction in a virgin abdomen a few weeks after developing a thyroid storm.

Serositis as an indicator of poor prognosis in pediatric systemic lupus erythematosus.

BACKGROUND: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a multi-systemic autoimmune disease that causes inflammation of the serosa (serositis). This retrospective study aimed to evaluate the clinical characteristics of serositis in childhood-onset SLE (cSLE) and analyze its association with long-term outcomes. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of patients with cSLE diagnosed at a medical center in Taiwan, analyzing data collected from January 2002 to December 2022. We analyzed the clinical features of patients with serositis as pleuritis and/or pericarditis with at least a sm…
