Unlike syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydial infection, which can cause serious short-term and long-term problems but are themselves curable, the viral STDs I have discussed are incurable and have worrisome long-term complications. The management of these illnesses should emphasize primary prevention, which involves the use of condoms and selectivity in the choice of sexual partners.

There are at least 16 possible sexually transmitted diseases, and it is not uncommon to find patients suffering from two or more sexually transmitted infections or infestations. Case histories of two men, one with gonorrhea, scabies, and pediculosis pubis, the other with syphilis and scabies, illustrate this point. It is to be emphasized that when one venereal disease is found, the clinician should look for another.

Over a 4-year period, 409 cases of suspected sexual abuse of children were reviewed to study sexually transmitted disease (STD). Sexually transmitted disease was identified in 54 (13%) of the 409 children: 46 cases of gonorrhea, six cases of syphilis, four cases of trichomoniasis, and three cases of condyloma acuminata. Nine of the 46 children with cultures positive for gonorrhea did not have a history of discharge. Four of the six children with syphilis also had a gonococcal infection. One child with syphilis had condyloma. Only one child had clinical features of syphilis. Sexually transmitte

To determine the prevalence and pattern of sexually transmitted diseases among sexually abused children, we evaluated 532 victims under 14 years of age for the presence of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Treponema pallidum. Twenty-five girls with vaginal discharge and six children with perineal skin lesions underwent more detailed microbiologic examination. Thirty-four infections were identified in 33 children. Gonorrhea was present in 25 (4.7%) of the 532 children, and other sexually transmitted diseases were identified in nine children. Rates of gonococcal infection were higher for children with m…

This article discusses sexually transmitted infections (STI) screening and focuses on reportable STIs. This includes gonorrhea, chlamydia, syphilis, and human immunodeficiency virus. Hepatitis B and C, trichomonas, and herpes are covered as well. Recommendations are summarized from the various organizations that produce screening recommendations. These screening recommendations only apply to asymptomatic individuals. Once an individual has symptoms, testing becomes diagnostic. It is important to know the prevalence of STIs within your population. If you work in a population with a high prevale

Sexually transmitted diseases (STD) are a major public health problem because their incidence is increasing worldwide despite prevention campaigns and because they raise the risk of HIV infection. Anorectal localisations of STD are common among men who have sex with men (MSM) but can also be seen among heterosexuals (men or women). Transmission of such infections is due to anal sex or to other sexual behaviours like "fisting". Although some pathogens (like Human Papillomavirus-HPV) are common in gastroenterologist/proctologist consultations, others are not so well-known. Furthermore during the…

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) have reached epidemic numbers in this country and represent considerable costs to the health care system. Nurses, who see clients in a variety of acute and community settings, have a unique opportunity to discuss STDs and their prevention. However, nurses must retain knowledge that is up-to-date on each of these diseases. Nurses need to take the lead in evaluating their clients' risk of acquiring STDs and tailor specific preventative techniques to the individual needs uncovered.

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are infections and resulting clinical syndromes caused by more than 25 infectious organisms transmitted through sexual activity. International travellers are at great risk of contracting any of these STDs, including HIV, if they have been sexually exposed to persons with any of these diseases. Population movement has been shown to be a major contributing factor in the global spread of STDs. Increased sexual promiscuity and casual sexual relationships tend to occur during travel abroad to foreign countries. Travellers should be aware that the risk of STDs is…

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are a major health problem for adolescents. Health care providers for adolescents play a critical role in preventing and treating STDs. In May 2002, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published the Sexually Transmitted Diseases Treatment Guidelines 2002. These evidence-based guidelines are based on a systematic literature review focusing on information that had become available since the 1998 Guidelines for Treatment of STDs. This article reviews the new STD treatment guidelines for gonorrhea, chlamydia, bacterial vaginosis, trichomonas, vulvova…

Sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) cause considerable morbidity among their victims. This is true even for children. Unfortunately, this aspect has not received due attention and remains a relatively ignored field. We carried out a study of the clinico-epidemiological profile of STDs among the pediatric patients who attended the STD clinic of a tertiary care hospital. Pediatric patients who presented with STDs from January of 1995 to February of 2001 constituted the subject material of this study. A detailed clinical examination and relevant laboratory investigations were carried out in all …

Fifty eight (16%) of the 362 patients, who reported to Dermatology and STD Department with symptoms pertaining to their genitourinary system were below 14 years of age. Fifty four (93.1%) of these children belonged to families of lower socio-economic strata. All the children were slum dwellers and none of them had studied beyond the third class. Syphilis was seen in 27.6%, gonorrhea in 24.1%, chancroid in 22.4%, candidiasis in 10.3%, condylomata acuminata in 6.9% and herpes genitalis in 6.9% of these children. The probable reasons for the increased prevalence of sexually transmitted diseases i…

Although Sarcoptes scabii and Phthirus pubis infestations in humans are not always associated with the presence of other sexually transmitted diseases, usually they are. Therefore, patients presenting with scabies or P. pubis should be routinely tested for various sexually transmitted diseases. These very uncomfortable infestations are easily curable with proper therapy. Lindane 1% preparations effectively exterminate both vermin. We have not seen any resistant strains. Especially with P. pubis, all household contacts should be treated to avoid reinfestation.

In both men and women, STD-associated genital infections may cause permanent damage to the reproductive tract resulting in sub- or infertility. In men, the wide zone between sterility and normal fertility makes it difficult to demarcate the precise role of infection on post-infection fecundity, but it seems less important than in women. The reproductive events were studied in a cohort of 1,309 pregnancy-seeking women, < or = 35 years of age, after laparoscopically verified acute salpingitis, and 451 women with normal laparoscopy. Tubal factor infertility (TFI) was diagnosed in 12.1% of the pat

The role of quinolones in the treatment of sexually transmitted diseases is assessed. Little is known of their activity against Treponema pallidum. These compounds are all highly active against Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and have produced good in vivo results with a single dose. Only the more recent compounds show useful antichlamydial activity in vitro. Clinical trials with ofloxacin demonstrate the efficacy of a single daily dose for 7 days for chlamydial genital infection in men and women. Results for treatment of bacterial vaginosis have so far been disappointing. Ciprofloxacin and fleroxacin …

This paper presents a brief review of historical developments in women's health care. It describes the current campaign against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) and assesses the campaign's success in light of its history and the reality of women's lives. The authors suggest that women are forced into a double-bind in which they are expected to take responsibility for the prevention of STDs although they may not have the ability to do so. Modifications are suggested which take into account gender-role socialization and social group norms.

Sexually active travelers are at risk for a variety of STDs, including traditional venereal infections such as gonorrhea, chlamydial urethritis, syphilis, chancroid, and herpes simplex infection. More recently, hepatitis B, hepatitis C, and HIV-1 have also been described. Risk varies depending on the geographic area of travel and the type of sexual contact. Physicians should be aware of the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance of N. gonorrhoeae and H. ducreyi because this will affect empiric antibiotic therapy. Prevention should focus on proper and consistent usage of barrier contraceptives.
