OBJECTIVE: To identify statements of consensus on the use of shared medical appointments (SMAs) to improve quality of care and patient health outcomes in lifestyle medicine practice especially for prevention, treatment, and management of chronic disease.
METHODS: A multidisciplinary panel of experts in shared medical appointments (SMAs) followed an a priori protocol for developing consensus statements. Using an iterative, online Delphi process, panel members reported levels of agreement and statements were classified as consensus, near consensus, or no consensus.
RESULTS: The panel identifie…

Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a complex chronic disease affecting over 400 million people worldwide. Managing T2DM and its associated complications in individual patient consultations poses substantial challenges to physicians due to limited time and resources and lack of access to multidisciplinary teams. Shared medical appointments (SMAs) are consecutive medical consultations provided by a physician in a group setting, where integrated medical care and patient education are delivered in a single session. SMAs allow physicians to deliver the same level of care to multiple patients at the…

BACKGROUND: Shared medical appointments (SMAs) are a novel modality for treating patients with similar conditions, together, by a team of interdisciplinary providers. SMAs benefit patients with substance use disorder (SUD), but no research has focused on the feasibility of implementation of SMAs in a teaching clinic.
METHODS: Primary care residents rotated in a half-day ambulatory addiction clinic for 4 weeks where a third-year resident co-facilitated 4 SMAs. Confidence, knowledge, and attitudes about SUD care were assessed using web-based surveys at weeks 0, 4, and 8. Pre- and post-intervent…

Yoga is highly sought after by people seeking oncology care, endorsed by clinical practice guidelines, and supported by leading cancer organizations, yet barriers related to access, time, cost, and availability of quality providers remain. Shared medical appointments (SMA), a group healthcare model where patients with similar medical conditions participate in a collective appointment with healthcare providers, are associated with increased access to quality care, patient satisfaction, and clinician satisfaction. We piloted a unique insurance-covered virtual yoga SMA series to assess feasibilit…

Purpose: Reimbursable in-person Shared Medical Appointments, where multiple patients meet with a provider to receive general education and individualized care, are effective at reducing glycated hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) for patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus. There is little research on improving HbA1c control using Lifestyle Medicine Shared Medical Appointment (LMSMA) series, especially with virtual sessions. Setting: We describe the glycemic outcomes of a virtual LMSMA series for patients with prediabetes and type 2 diabetes mellitus in an academic primary care setting. Int…

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Chronic pain in older adults affects mobility, cognition, and social isolation. Episodic medical visits often struggle to address the complexity of chronic pain. Group medical visits combine clinical care with group education and peer support, addressing limitations of one-on-one care. This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated group medical visit's effectiveness for chronic pain management in older adults.
RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: A systematic literature search was conducted in June 2025 for studies evaluating group medical visits in adults aged ≥60 wit

Shared medical appointments (SMAs) for diabetes and group prenatal care (GPC) for pregnant patients have emerged as innovative care delivery models. They have the potential to transform diabetes care by overcoming many of the time limitations of traditional one-on-one clinical visits. There is compelling evidence that SMAs improve glycemic control for nonpregnant patients with diabetes, GPC reduces Black and White health disparities in preterm birth, and diabetes GPC increases postpartum glucose tolerance test uptake among patients with gestational diabetes mellitus. GPC models stand out as on…

Purpose Audiologists should be treating hyperacusis patients. However, it can be difficult to know where to begin because treatment protocols and evidence-based treatment studies are lacking. A good place to start in any tinnitus and hyperacusis clinic is to incorporate a group educational session. Method Here, we outline our approach to establishing a hyperacusis group educational session that includes specific aspects of getting to know each patient to best meet their needs, understanding the problems associated with hyperacusis, explaining the auditory system and the relationship of hyperac

IMPORTANCE: Back pain is among the most common, disabling, and costly conditions managed in primary care in the US, but current treatment options often do not provide adequate relief. Mindfulness-based interventions have demonstrated effectiveness in individuals with chronic low back pain (CLBP); however, mindfulness remains underused in part because it is not integrated into most outpatient care models.
OBJECTIVE: To assess whether persons with CLBP participating in a mindfulness group medical visit intervention experience significantly improved pain intensity and interference compared with
