Fourteen examinations of the tear ducts and 21 sialograms were performed using digital subtraction and conventional techniques. In nine of the former and 15 of the latter, digital subtraction produced better results, in the remainder conventional technique was equally good. A randomly selected group of patients which had been subjected to sialography during 1975/76, was analysed retrospectively. In a total of 386 patients, 395 contrast radiographs had been performed; of these, 243 sialographs were evaluated retrospectively, the definite diagnosis having been established by surgery, biopsy or clinical course of the disease. Autologous transplantation of submandibular gland (SMG) is effective for severe keratoconjunctivitis sicca (KCS). The diagnostic process in sialography was evaluated using the mouse parotid gland as a model. The relative significance of each of the three diagnostic phases, psychophysical, psychological and nosological, was determined by analysing observer accuracy in detecting sialoadenitis and sialodochitis on digital and analogue microsialograms. Roentgenography without contrast media and sialography, as well as the basic facts concerning the radiodiagnostic of the salivary gland, are all discussed with regard to the most current equipment, examination techniques, the positioning of patients, and the problems involved in contrast media. The technique used in more than 4,000 sialograms is recommended. The diagnostic value of this method is illustrated by means of representative patient series: sialolithiasis, inflammatory disorders, and tumors. The limitations of the method are demonstrated and complementary examinations shown.

Over a period of one year, 82 patients with chronic inflammations, concrements, abscesses, cysts, Warthin's tumours, pleomorphic adenomas, lymphonodules and neoplasms of the salivary glands were examined by ultrasound and sialography. In the present study 162 patients with clinically suspected diseases of the major salivary glands were examined via sonography (n = 162), sialography (n = 111) and CT-sialography (n = 49). We recorded 45 sialograms on digital screens and discuss the use of a digital recording, processing and screening system for the diagnosis of inflammation, tumours and stones of the major salivary glands. Thirty-three investigations of a total of 33 parotid sialograms and 12 submandibular sialograms were analysed. A ductal examination with small volumes of soluble contrast media, permitting painless examination, was possible in all cases due to excellent homogeneous optical density, satisfactory detail and good contrast.

To document computed tomographic topography of salivary glands and their ducts in dogs, a retrograde filling with methylcellulose and iodinated contrast medium was performed in three cadavers.
