Infectious diseases and discrimination: Sicily's Lampedusa migrants.

Lampedusa, a picturesque Italian island in the Mediterranean, serves as a gateway for migrants from Africa and Asia to Europe. Despite populist rhetoric portraying migrants as carriers of disease, epidemiological data reveal very low levels of communicable diseases among migrants, challenging false narratives and xenophobic sentiments propagated by populist governments.

Congenital talipes equinovarus: an epidemiological study in Sicily.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Congenital talipes equinovarus (clubfoot) can present in 2 forms: "syndromic", in which other malformations exist, and the more common "idiopathic" form, where there are no other associated malformations. We analyzed the epidemiology of congenital talipes equinovarus in the Sicilian population, looking for potential etiological factors. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Among the 801,324 live births recorded between January 1991 and December 2004, 827 cases were registered (560 males; M/F sex ratio: 2.1). Control infants were randomly selected from a historical cohort of live birt

Viral gastroenteritis in children hospitalised in Sicily, Italy.

The aim of the present study was to describe the epidemiologic and clinical characteristics of acute viral gastroenteritis in hospitalised Italian children. A total of 215 stool specimens were collected from January to December 2003 from patients hospitalised in Palermo for acute diarrhoea. Samples were tested for group A rotavirus, astrovirus, adenovirus, norovirus, enteropathogenic bacteria, and parasites. Rotaviruses, mostly belonging to types G1-G4, were detected in 25.1% of samples, astrovirus in 7%, adenovirus in 6%, norovirus in 18.6%, and bacterial agents in 17.2%. No parasitic infecti

Toscana virus encephalitis following a holiday in Sicily.

We report a case of Toscana virus encephalitis. This emerging pathogen is among the three most common causes of meningoencephalitis in Europe during the warm season, yet remains under-recognised. Doctors should consider Toscana virus infection in patients presenting with neurological symptoms who have a relevant exposure history during the summer months.

Unusual clinical variants of cutaneous leishmaniasis in Sicily.

BACKGROUND: The term "leishmaniasis" defines a group of vector-borne diseases caused by species of the genus Leishmania and characterized by a spectrum of clinical manifestations. Parasite properties (infectivity, pathogenicity, virulence), host factors, and host responses regulate heterogeneous disease expression. Sicily is one of the major islands of the Mediterranean Basin and is considered to be a hypo-endemic area for cutaneous leishmaniasis. Leishmania infantum is the most common species on the island. METHODS: Fifty patients (both sexes and different ages) with lesions clinically sugge…

Bovine babesiosis in Sicily: preliminary study on pathology.

In this study, the authors report the preliminary pathological features of an outbreak of spontaneous babesiosis detected in a group of thirty-five, five to six months-old Simmenthal calves imported in Sicily in November 1998. Five of them showed fever, anaemia, haemoglobinuria, inappetence, depression, thirst, swollen lymph-nodes and poor body conditions a few days after being introduced in the farm. Several ticks were present particularly at the basis of the horns and near the ears of the sick animals. Blood smears, stained with May-Grunwald-Giemsa, showed several pyriform merozoites in the …

[Apropos of 1 case of anisakiasis contracted in Sicily].

The authors describe a case of anisakiasis in Sicily. The diagnosis was based on the knowledge that a contaminated fish, Lepidopus caudatus, had probably been absorbed, as well as on clinical intestinal symptoms, intestinal lesions observed by endoscopy and O.G.D.S, duodenal infiltration by eosinophilic polymorphonuclear, positive ELISA anisakis serology and successful treatment by albendazole.

[Iodine deficiency and iodine prophylaxis experience in Sicily].

Twenty years ago we described an area of goiter endemia in North-Eastern Sicily. In this area endemic goiter was associated to a variable degree of iodine deficiency and, in some places, also to an increased thiocyanate urine excretion. Our studies have demonstrated a strict relationship between iodine deficiency and congenital hypothyroidism (both permanent and transient), an increased prevalence of autonomously functioning thyroid nodules and an increased prevalence of thyroid cancer (follicular and anaplastic histotypes). A number of cases of endemic cretinism have also been described. An a…

Epidemiologic surveillance of visceral leishmaniasis in Sicily, Italy.

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is endemic in Sicily. Although it is a notifiable disease, there is evidence that the actual number of cases is higher than that reported. In 1987, a regional reference center for active surveillance of VL was established and it recorded a total of 284 cases through 1995, a mean of 31.5 cases/year and about four-fold more than previously reported. Of the 284 cases, 150 (53%) were children (< or = 14 years of age), and of the 134 adults, 39 (29%) were coinfected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The commonest viscerotropic zymodeme of Leishmania infantum, MON …

Cancers of the female genital tract in Ragusa, Sicily.

A descriptive study of cancers of the female genital tract (cervix, endometrium, ovary, labia, vulva and vagina) in the province of Ragusa (Sicily) was carried out using incidence and mortality data of the Ragusa Cancer Registry, covering the years 1981-1987. Corpus uteri was the most frequent site of cancer, followed by cervix utery and ovary; the highest mortality rates were exhibited by ovary cancer, whose survival at five years was 18.1 percent. A comparison of incidence and mortality rates with those observed by Italian and European registries shows that while in Ragusa rates for cancers …

Genetic histories of individuals from multi-faith medieval Sicily.

Medieval Sicily, located at the intersection of Europe, North Africa and the Near East, experienced successive political and religious transitions under Byzantine, Aghlabid, Fatimid, Norman, and Swabian rule. While it is well established that these events led to multi-faith societies, the long-term genetic impact of regime change is unclear. To evaluate this potential impact, we applied ancient genomic analysis to 111 archaeological Sicilian individuals, leading to successful mitochondrial haplotype inferences for 67 individuals and genome-wide analyses for 32 individuals dated between the 5th…

Tuberculosis among Migrant Populations in Sicily: A Field Report.

BACKGROUND: In the EU, tuberculosis (TB) mainly affects vulnerable people, including migrants. From 2014 to 2017, we have estimated the frequency of both tuberculosis and latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) among the migrant population hosted in 41 reception centers in western Sicily (ITaCA network). MATERIALS AND METHODS: All migrants were consecutively recruited for the screening of TB infection with physical examination and TST in 1,020 migrants and with IGRA in the others 2,690. The screening was carried out 4-8 weeks after landing in Sicily. For all migrants with a positive screening te…
