Infection has not been considered in this article with each individual implant. The incidence is low indeed. In the only publication concerned primarily with the topic of infection following silicone implant surgery, Millender et al. reviewed 2105 implants of varying kinds. Silicone oil can be easily dissolved in vivo from silicone intraocular lenses by perfluorohexyloctane. Using specular microscopy, we examined the corneal endothelium in a patient with silicone lens implantation immediately after cataract surgery and 5 weeks postoperatively. There were no signs of acute or chronic toxicity to the endothelium.

Two cases of lymphadenopathy resulting from a lymph node foreign body reaction to silicone are presented. In each case lymph node biopsy was performed because of the clinical suspicion of neoplastic disease. Glaucoma and emulsification are two complications of silicone oil injection that are often coexisting. This study was undertaken to determine whether removal of emulsified oil has any effect on the management of the glaucoma. A comparison of eyes with and without glaucoma with emulsified oil also was undertaken. Eighteen eyes that underwent removal of emulsified silicone oil more than 6 months after the injection of the oil were reviewed. BACKGROUND/AIM: Isolated stenosis of the lacrimal punctum is a frequent cause of epiphora. Treatment relies on surgical opening or dilatation with bi- or monocanalicular prosthesis. Recently, silicone perforated punctum plugs (PPP) were proposed. The drawback with these silicone PPP was that secretions accumulate in the central orifice blocking the spontaneous flow of tears. A modification of the surface of the PPP using polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) was thus proposed. The aim was to compare silicone PPP with new PVP surface treated PPP.

We report two complications of silicone elastomer finger joint prostheses. In one patient, the prostheses broke, with silicone particles present in synovium ("detritic synovitis"). In another patient, silicone particles were found in an axillary lymph node five years after insertion of prostheses in the ipsilateral hand (prostheses were intact at the time). Microscopically, silicone particles in synovium and lymph node were identical to particles abraded from a new prosthesis.

We report a case of vulvar silicone granulomas following injection of liquid silicone into the labia. The patient is a 51-yr-old female who presented with vulvar pain and enlarged, indurated labia majora.
