Single item measures of parental history of depression: Do adult children's responses agree with their parents' own reports?

BACKGROUND: Parental history of depression is a risk factor for major depressive disorder. In many cases, it is impractical or impossible to contact parents directly to assess their depression history. Although validated, multi-item instruments that assess parental history of depression are available, a single item measure (e.g., has your mother/father ever had depression?) is still used in many settings. This study examined the agreement between responses of adult children (n = 10,142) on the single item measure and parents' own responses on a validated measure of lifetime history of major de

Mortality in single fathers compared with single mothers and partnered parents: a population-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Single parent families, including families headed by single fathers, are becoming increasingly common around the world. Previous evidence suggests that single parenthood is associated with adverse health outcomes and increased mortality; however, most studies have focused on single mothers, with little known about the health of single fathers. This study aimed to examine mortality in a large population-based sample of Canadian single fathers compared with single mothers and partnered fathers and mothers. METHODS: We used a representative sample of 871 single fathers, 4590 single m…

Depression in left-behind adolescents from single-parent families: a nomogram based on multidimensional risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a significant issue affecting adolescents' mental health. While depression research is relatively extensive, studies focusing on left-behind adolescents from single-parent families remain limited. Due to their unique family structure, this group is more susceptible to multiple stressors, increasing their risk of depression. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to construct a predictive model based on a nomogram to identify the multidimensional characteristics of depression risk among left-behind adolescents from single-parent families, providing theoretical and practical evide

A single center experience of prenatal parent-fetus trio exome sequencing for pregnancies with congenital anomalies.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the diagnostic yield of trio exome sequencing in fetuses with multiple structural defects with no pathogenic findings in cytogenetic and microarray analyses. METHODS: We recruited 51 fetuses with two or more defects, non-immune fetal hydrops or fetal akinesia deformation syndrome|or fetal akinesia deformation sequence (FADS). Trio exome sequencing was performed on DNA from chorionic villi samples and parental blood. Detection of genomic variation and prioritization of clinically relevant variants was performed according to in-house standard operating procedures. RESULT

"Hope is so fragile": parent perspectives on the care of children with single-ventricle heart disease.

INTRODUCTION: Children born with single-ventricle heart disease face a myriad of medical comorbidities, psychological risks, and quality of life challenges as they age. Parent perspectives on their care from diagnosis through development are critical to understand best ways and times to intervene to promote child and family adjustment to illness. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Parents of children with status post-Fontan procedure were recruited to complete an electronic qualitative survey exploring parent perspectives of care. Grounded theory was utilised to analyse the data and identify themes and su

Parent and Patient Reported Outcomes for Head Shape in Children Undergoing Surgery for Single Suture Synostosis.

Assessing outcomes following surgery for single suture craniosynostosis is important to ensure minimum standards are being met, but also to compare results using different surgical techniques and treatment protocols. What constitutes an "outcome" and how this is measured remains a challenge, particularly when assessment should include consideration of aesthetic, functional, and psychological domains. The Oxford Craniofacial Unit has initiated routine collection of parents' and patients' ratings of 2 factors that are closely associated with psychological adjustment; how noticeable the child's he

Parent psychological wellbeing in a single-family room versus an open bay neonatal intensive care unit.

BACKGROUND: Studies of parents' psychological well-being in single-family rooms in neonatal intensive care units have shown conflicting results. AIMS: To compare emotional distress in the form of depression, anxiety, stress and attachment scores among parents of very preterm infants cared for in a single-family rooms unit vs an open bay unit. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective survey design. SUBJECT: Parents (132) of 77 infants born at 28 0/7-32 0/7 weeks of gestation in the two units. OUTCOME MEASURES: Duration of parental presence was recorded. Endovascular treatment of cerebral aneurysms in relation to their parent artery wall: a single center study.

We report our two-year experience in the endovascular treatment of brain aneurysms in relation to their parent artery wall. We prospectively recorded patients with intracranial aneurysms (107 ruptured - 38 unruptured) treated with coiling during a two-year period: 145 patients, 94 females and 51 males - mean age 56 years. The aneurysms were divided into side-wall (A) and bifurcation (B) groups. A total occlusion rate was noted in post-embolization angiograms in 101 aneurysms (70%) with a morbidity of 4%. No angiographic recurrence arose in the six-month follow-up. The two groups had a similar

Parent's AI Coach (PaiCoach): A Single-Case Experimental Study of an AI-Supported Parent Coaching System for Autistic Children.

PURPOSE: Artificial intelligence (AI) may enhance the scalability and immediacy of parent coaching by providing automated, performance-based feedback within naturalistic routines. In this study, we examined the effects of Parent's AI Coach (PaiCoach), an AI-supported parent coaching system, on parent implementation of evidence-based practices in improving autistic children's communicative responsiveness during shared book reading. METHOD: Participants included four mother-child dyads with minimally verbal autistic children between 45 and 56 months of age. A concurrent multiple-baseline across

The relationship between single-parent status and parenting capacities in mothers of youth with chronic health conditions: the mediating role of income.

OBJECTIVE: To retrospectively examine the relationship of single-parent status to parenting capacity variables in mothers of youth with a chronic health condition. METHODS: Parental overprotection, perceived vulnerability, and parenting stress were assessed in 383 mothers (308 married and 75 single parents) of youth with one of six chronic health conditions (i.e., type 1 diabetes, asthma, cancer, cystic fibrosis, hemophilia, or sickle cell disease). RESULTS: Single mothers evidenced higher levels of both perceived vulnerability and parenting stress, but not overprotection, than married paren…

Caregiving, single parents and cumulative stresses when caring for a child with cancer.

BACKGROUND: Single parents whose children have cancer are a marginalized group who report less family centred care, and therefore, less quality cancer care for their children. As such, the aims of this study were to explore how single parents of children with cancer describe their caregiving experiences and to understand their contextual life stressors. METHODS: A constructivist grounded theory method was used. Qualitative interviews with 29 single parents of children with cancer who were at least 6 months post-diagnosis were recruited between November 2009 and April 2011 from four hospitals …

Adolescent, Parent and Clinician Perspectives on Time Alone in Chronic Illness Visits at a Single Children's Hospital.

BACKGROUND: Time alone between adolescents with chronic illnesses and their clinicians may contribute to patient-centred care and transition readiness within this population. Shifts in the adolescent-parent-clinician relationship underpin this contribution; as such, this qualitative study explored adolescent, parent and clinician perspectives on time alone in routine visits for paediatric chronic illness. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews with English-speaking adolescents (ages 12-17, n = 65) and their parents (n = 63) were conducted after follow-up visits for inflammatory bowel disease (IB

White matter hyperintensity, parent artery steno-occlusion, and neurological deterioration in anterior circulation single subcortical infarction patients.

BACKGROUND: The evidence for the association between white matter hyperintensity (WMH) severity and neurological deterioration (ND) in patients with single subcortical infarction (SSI) remains unclear and whether the association between them is modified by anterior circulation parent artery steno-occlusion (PAS) is unknown. Herein, we aimed to prospectively investigate the internal relevance. METHODS: In this prospective study, the severity of WMH and PAS were assessed in 288 consecutive patients with anterior circulation SSI arriving at our hospital, a tertiary teaching hospital affiliated w

Internet Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Maternal Guilt in a Child Abuse Case: A Single Case Study.

This single case study explored the effectiveness of Internet Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (I-PCIT) for addressing maternal guilt in a case of child abuse. I-PCIT was implemented because traditional PCIT was challenging due to the family's geographical constraints and the mother's professional commitments. The study utilized multiple assessment tools, including the Eyberg Child Behavior Inventory (ECBI) and the Beck Depression Inventory-II (BDI-II), to measure the therapy's impact on the child's behavior and the mother's depressive symptoms. The case conceptualization highlighted the mothe

Endovascular parent artery occlusion for the treatment of wide-neck A1 segment aneurysms: a single-center experience.

The goal of this study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of A1 occlusion at the level of wide necked A1 aneurysms, where there are bilateral patent A1 segments and a patent AcomA. Between 2000 and 2010, 9 patients with wide necked A1 aneurysms were treated by coiling of the aneurysm along with parent vessel occlusion. All aneurysms had a wide neck (≥ 4 mm). None were treated in the acute phase of a subarachnoid hemorrhage. Three small infarcts were noted on routine post-treatment head CT, 1 of which was symptomatic (transient hemiparesthesia). On control angiogram at 6 months or mor

Anxiety and sleep mediate the effect of food insecurity on depression in single parents in Ghana.

BACKGROUND: Data on the association between food insecurity and depression in single parents in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) are limited, and no study has reported the serial mediation effects of psychosocial factors in this association. This study examines the extent to which anxiety and sleep serially explain the food insecurity and depression link among single parents in Ghana. METHODS: Data on 627 single parents were obtained through a multi-stage stratified sampling technique. Food insecurity was assessed using the Food and Agriculture Organization Food Insecurity Experience …
