Snake bite envenoming is a neglected tropical disease affecting millions of people living in the developing world. According to the offending snake species, the clinical picture may be dominated by swelling and soft tissue necrosis in the bitten limb, or by systemic or neurological manifestations. Serious neurological complications, including stroke and muscle paralysis, are related to the toxic effects of the venom, which contains a complex mixture of toxins affecting the coagulation cascade, the neuromuscular transmission, or both. Metalloproteinases, serine proteases, and C-type lentins (co

Snake bite envenomation is not uncommon in Taiwan. This study focuses on the pattern of poisonous snake bites and their management in southern Taiwan over a 5-year period. The case histories of 37 patients with poisonous snake bites admitted to the Kaohsiung Medical University Hospital between June 2001 and July 2005 were analyzed retrospectively. Three patients, bitten by unknown species of venomous snakes, were excluded from this study. The frequency of snakebites from each species of snake, the local and systemic manifestations of snake bite, treatment of complications and final outcomes we…

Seventy-six patients (30% children) were admitted to Fremantle Hospital over 10 years with suspected snake bite. Twenty-nine patients were definitely bitten, with 26 bites being witnessed. Of the 13 patients definitely envenomated, 11 had a coagulopathy although seven were asymptomatic; four other patients may have been envenomated. The dugite (Pseudonaja affinis) was probably responsible for most envenomations. Eleven of the 13 envenomated patients received antivenom (six brown snake, four polyvalent and one tiger snake antivenom). The patient envenomated by the tiger snake (Notechis ater occ

In Italy ophidiasis by viper snakes seems to be in light, but in continuous increase; may be the mortality is to be inferior to one per cent, even if there aren't any reliable statistics. The Authors, finding embarrassment and unpreparedness from the Italian physician in such a situation, intend to provide with this work a correct diagnostic-therapeutic iter to be followed in a case of snakebite. Here are reported and discussed the essential data for the diagnosis of viper bite: snake identification, wound inspection, local and general symptomatology, laboratory data and principal complication

OBJECTIVE: To determine the extent of the snake bite problem in domestic animals, its regional significance and the effects of antivenom treatment.
DESIGN: A questionnaire was designed seeking information on the number and type of domestic animals referred, whether treated or untreated, type of snakes and management of the bite.
PROCEDURE: The survey form was sent to 10% of veterinary surgeons, selected at random throughout Australia.
RESULTS: The response of 106 veterinary surgeons revealed that snake bite in domestic animals is frequent, with an estimated 6200 cases reported annually. Bit

Neurotoxic snake bites may cause paralysis within 1-8 h. Appropriate management includes early and adequate volumes of antivenom as well as ventilatory support. This case study describes the management of a pregnant woman who was bitten on a farm in rural South Africa and transferred to an academic hospital, 300 km away. An approach to the management of snake bites in pregnancy is discussed as well as a review of the current known literature of venomous snakes and the use of antivenom in pregnancy. This report aims to encourage further reporting of snake bites in pregnancy.

A patient who developed hypopituitarism after viperine envenomation is described. Thrombosis as a part of disseminated intravascular coagulation may have been the cause. Hypopituitarism should be suspected in such cases especially when there is associated acute renal failure.

A snake bite may quite frequently lead to haemorrhagic symptoms ranging from hypofibrinogenaemia to disseminated intravascular coagulation. In rare cases acute renal insufficiency associated with tubular necrosis may occur due to a direct toxic lesion, shock symptoms or DIC. However, it is extremely rare that glomerulonephritis results from a snake bite. A thirteen-year-old girl develops gross haematuria, albuminuria and cylindruria without any shock symptoms two days after having been bitten by a European viper. Coagulation state and complement show slight changes, and the histological examin

The case is reported of a seven-year-old girl who was bitten by a tiger snake and sustained severe liver, skeletal muscle and myocardial muscle damage as a result of envenomation. She recovered after treatment with polyvalent snake bite antivenom preceded by promethazine.

We report on a 31-year-old white woman, who was bitten in her right calf by a "spitting cobra" (Neia nigricollis) during a safari in Tansania. Minor initial systemic symptoms such as nausea and vomiting were followed by severe oedematous swelling of the extremity after 2-3 h and demarcation of a 2.75 x 2.75 in. area of necrotic skin. The patient returned to her home country, where 8 days after the snake-bite necrosectomy was performed. Antibiotics, anti-inflammatory agents and local therapy with hydrocolloidal wound dressings were administered. With this therapy the lesion healed completely wi

We present a case of an 18-year-old British soldier who was bitten by an unidentified snake whilst stationed on the Iran/Iraq border. He was evacuated to the closest Role 2+ medical facility. Within 2 days he had developed bruising and a haematoma at the bite site. An improvised measure of clotting status, the bleeding time, was employed, showing that his blood was severely anticoagulated. He was transferred to the Field Hospital where coagulation screen revealed a DIC picture. He required 5 units of cryoprecipitate and 2 doses of antivenom. This case report demonstrates the need for prompt ev

Snake bite envenomation demands a high level of knowledge and skill on the part of the critical care nurse. The following paper examines a case study of one patient who presented on two separate occasions, with snake bites from a taipan and then, 6 months later, from a death adder. Snake venom contains a variety of complex substances which do vary between the snake species; therefore, the different forms of envenomation require different modalities of treatment. This paper seeks to examine the different management required for each specific episode of envenomation. It compares the characterist…

From 1986 to 1989, 8,721 accidents caused by poisonous snakes have been notified to the Government of the State of São Paulo (Brazil), Health Department, which represented the average annual incidence rate of 6.8 to 7.4/100,000 persons. The classification of the snake genus had been possible in 6,834 cases and the distribution was: Bothrops (85.6%), Crotalus (13.3%) and Micrurus (1.1%). The vast majority of cases (5,807) occurred from November to April. The age distribution shows that 74.4% of the accidents had been suffered by people from 10 to 49 year old people with great predominance in ma

From 1980 to 1984, a total of 2,329 people who alleged that they had been bitten by venomous snakes were admitted to 292 Italian hospitals having first aid stations. Three died. Most patients (62%) did not show any symptomatology of envenomation. The epidemiological and clinical aspects of 286 patients, out of 885 exhibiting signs and symptoms of snake bite envenomation, have been studied. The symptoms and signs were: oedema, gastro-intestinal symptoms, pain at the site of the bite, respiratory distress, leucocytosis, CNS depression, shock, fever, cyanosis, exanthema, ecchymoses, incoagulable
