Trimethylaminuria: causes and diagnosis of a socially distressing condition.

Trimethylaminuria is a disorder in which the volatile, fish-smelling compound, trimethylamine (TMA) accumulates and is excreted in the urine, but is also found in the sweat and breath of these patients. Because many patients have associated body odours or halitosis, trimethylaminuria sufferers can meet serious difficulties in a social context, leading to other problems such as isolation and depression. TMA is formed by bacteria in the mammalian gut from reduction of compounds such as trimethylamine-N-oxide (TMAO) and choline. Primary trimethylaminuria sufferers have an inherited enzyme deficie

Social Housing Conditions Modulate the Long-Lasting Increase in Cocaine Reward Induced by Intermittent Social Defeat.

Social defeat is considered the most representative animal model for studying the consequences of social stress. Intermittent social defeat (ISD) has proved to enhance the response to cocaine hedonic properties. In the present research, we evaluated if different social housing conditions, as housing with a familiar conspecific or with a female, exert a protective effect modulating the negative consequences of ISD as the increased sensitivity to cocaine and the induction of anxiety-like behavior. To achieve this objective, non-stressed or ISD OF1 male mice were divided into five different exper

Innate anxiety in rats determines vulnerability to social fear conditioning and social fear memory.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) involves excessive fear of social situations and can be induced by social trauma. However, the underlying mechanisms of individual differences in the formation of social fear memory remain unclear. To address this gap, we adapted our mouse social fear conditioning paradigm for rats (rSFC) and compared adult male rats selectively bred for high (HAB) or low (LAB) anxiety-related behaviour and non-selected controls (NAB). HAB and LAB rats are established as a model displaying genetically determined extremes in socio-emotional behaviours. Conditioned HAB, LAB, and NAB

Current social determinants of health and social risk factors in conditions of the cornea: a scoping review.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To achieve health equity in eye health and vision care, social determinants of health (SDoH) and the associated social risk factors must be addressed. To address SDoH and social risk factors in ophthalmology, they must first be identified. The purpose of this review was to determine the SDoH and social risk factors in conditions of the cornea that have most recently been explored. RECENT FINDINGS: This review identified social risk factors associated with all five domains of SDoH, as outlined by Healthy People 2030. The neighborhood and built environment was the domain iden

Evaluating the predictability of medical conditions from social media posts.

We studied whether medical conditions across 21 broad categories were predictable from social media content across approximately 20 million words written by 999 consenting patients. Facebook language significantly improved upon the prediction accuracy of demographic variables for 18 of the 21 disease categories; it was particularly effective at predicting diabetes and mental health conditions including anxiety, depression and psychoses. Social media data are a quantifiable link into the otherwise elusive daily lives of patients, providing an avenue for study and assessment of behavioral and en

Personal and social conditions potentially influencing women's hearing loss management.

Little gender-specific data related to hearing loss and hearing loss management are available. The purpose of this investigation was to examine personal and social conditions affecting women at selected stages of the adult life course that may influence hearing loss management. In all, 191 women in three age groups, ranging from 35 to 85 years old, participated. None reported hearing problems. Participants completed a demographic data form and were given a standard audiometric evaluation to confirm age-normal hearing. Each completed assessments of speech understanding in quiet and noise, audit…

Oral conditions and their social impact among HIV dental patients.

This study aimed to assess oral health status and the social impact of oral conditions among dental patients with HIV infection in comparison with general dental patients receiving public-funded care in Adelaide, South Australia. DMFT and CPITN indices were recorded by one dentist at a clinic for HIV dental patients. The data were compared with information from an existing survey of general dental patients. Social impact was assessed using the Oral Health Impact Profile questionnaire and responses from HIV dental patients were compared with responses from a telephone interview survey of Adelai

Psychotherapy and integrated treatment of social phobia and comorbid conditions.

Various treatment interventions for social phobia and its comorbid conditions have been developed in the past decade, including psychodynamic, cognitive-behavioral, and psychopharmacological approaches. Because social phobia has only fairly recently been recognized, no one form of treatment has been identified as superior to another. The difficulty in recognizing social phobia and identifying its frequent comorbidity with other psychiatric disorders poses particular treatment challenges. In this light, the author suggests eight operating principles that should be implemented to facilitate an e

Social fear conditioning: a novel and specific animal model to study social anxiety disorder.

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a major health concern with high lifetime prevalence. The current medication is rather unspecific and, despite considerable efforts, its efficacy is still unsatisfactory. However, there are no appropriate and specific animal models available to study the underlying etiology of the disorder. Therefore, we aimed to establish a model of specific social fear in mice and use this social fear conditioning (SFC) model to assess the therapeutic efficacy of the benzodiazepine diazepam and of the antidepressant paroxetine; treatments currently used for SAD patients. We s

The role of oxytocin receptors in social conditioned place preference.

Investigating the neural mechanisms underlying social reward is important not only to further current understanding of adaptive social behaviors, but also for informing potential therapeutic strategies for disorders associated with impaired social functioning. A growing body of literature indicates that the neuropeptide oxytocin (OXT) plays a modulatory role in dynamic social behaviors and may influence reward processing to initiate and maintain them. The present study aimed to assess the reinforcing effects of social interaction in rats using a social conditioned place preference paradigm, in

A Diagram of the Social-Ecological Conditions of Opioid Misuse and Overdose.

The United States is experiencing a crisis of opioid misuse and overdose. To understand the underlying factors, researchers have begun looking upstream to identify social and structural determinants. However, no study has yet aggregated these into a comprehensive ecology of opioid overdose. We scoped 68 literature sources and compiled a master list of opioid misuse and overdose conditions. We grouped the conditions and used the Social Ecological Model to organize them into a diagram. We reviewed the diagram with nine subject matter experts (SMEs) who provided feedback on its content, design, a

Genetic conflict and conditional altruism in social aphid colonies.

Although kin selection is central to the modern study of social evolution, recent studies of social species have revealed that no simple relationship exists between levels of kinship and sociality. The soldier-producing aphids are unique among highly social animals because, barring movement by aphids between colonies, they occur in clonal groups of genetically identical individuals. Potentially, clonality simplifies efforts to understand social evolution in aphids by obviating issues of intragroup conflict. However, we report here high levels of clonal mixing and conflict in an aphid society.

Theory of mind in social anxiety disorder, depression, and comorbid conditions.

Social anxiety disorder is characterized by marked interpersonal impairment, particularly when presenting with comorbid major depression. However, the foundational social-cognitive skills that underlie interpersonal impairment in comorbid and non-comorbid manifestations of SAD has to date received very little empirical investigation. In a sample of 119 young adults, the current study examined differences in theory of mind (ToM), defined as the ability to decode and reason about others' mental states, across four groups: (a) non-comorbid SAD; (b) non-comorbid Lifetime MDD; (c) comorbid SAD and

The social phobia and anxiety inventory: problem of underlying medical conditions.

The study investigated the possibility of score inflation in the Social Phobia and Anxiety Inventory due to underlying medical conditions in respondents. The Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders provides an exclusionary rule disallowing a diagnosis of social phobia when the fear is based on the presence of a medical condition. A computer-administered procedure, designed to simulate visually this paper-and-pencil inventory was created and compared to the original in a pilot study with r of .94 between the two procedures. Analysis indicates such medically based responding is com
