Social Support and Peer Group Integration of Adolescents with Diabetes.

The aim of this study was to examine, through the roles of peers with regards to diabetes, the relationship between the support perceived by … e the indifferent role does not meddle in any aspect related to the diabetes. Both roles can foster social integration of adolescents with diabetes into the peer group. The offender role creates social conflicts through discrimination and stigma of adolescents with diabetes. These roles appear during the process of socialization of adolescents with diabetes, where c …

Quality of life and social integration after allogeneic hematopoietic SCT.

In total, 124 adult patients in remission after allogeneic hematopoietic SCT (HSCT) participated in a cross-sectional study to assess health-related quality of life (HRQL). Assessment of HRQL was carried out using two questionnaires: the (EORTC QLQ-C30) and the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy (FACT) with specific modules for BMT (FACT-BMT). Transplanted patients differed from healthy controls in many HRQL-related dimensions in the EORTC QLQ-C30: social functioning 73.4 versus 85.8, P<0.0001; role functioning 74.6 versus 83.3, P<0.004; physical functioning 83.9 versus 89.9, P<0.001; emo

From social effort to social behavior: An integrated neural model for social motivation.

As humans rely on social groups for survival, social motivation is central to behavior and well-being. Here we define social motivation as the effort that initiates and directs behavior towards social outcomes, with the goal of satisfying our fundamental need for connection. We propose an integrated framework of social motivation which emphasizes the maintenance of optimal connection levels through effort exertion, regulating social approach and avoidance, which allow interpersonal synchrony. Together, these behaviors serve as basic building blocks of social behavior, and give rise to behavior

Teenage fertility and its social integration correlates: a control theory explanation.

"This study uses control theory to explain teenage fertility in one [U.S.] southeastern state. Control theory explains deviance from societal norms in terms of weak social bonding or integration. An important assumption of the study is that teenage parenting violates American parenting norms, and can thus be conceptualized as deviant behavior. Consequently, this study hypothesizes that teenage fertility should covary with measures of social integration. This study uses data from 64 parishes in Louisiana, and the results suggest that measures of social integration (i.e., divorce rates, percenta…

Factors affecting social integration after road traffic orthopaedic injuries in Rwanda.

BACKGROUND: Road traffic injuries (RTIs) leading to long-term disability present a significant public health challenge, causing immense personal and societal consequences. Every year, 50 million people are hurt, 1.2 million die, 30% are permanently disabled, and 14% cannot return to work due to road traffic accidents. However, in many developing countries, information on the social integration of patients post-RTI remains limited. This study aimed to identify factors contributing to social integration following road traffic-related orthopedic injuries (RTOI) in Rwanda. METHODOLOGY: A multicen…

The Neural Correlates of Face-Voice-Integration in Social Anxiety Disorder.

Faces and voices are very important sources of threat in social anxiety disorder (SAD), a common psychiatric disorder where core elements are fears of social exclusion and negative evaluation. Previous research in social anxiety evidenced increased cerebral responses to negative facial or vocal expressions and also generally increased hemodynamic responses to voices and faces. But it is unclear if also the cerebral process of face-voice-integration is altered in SAD. Applying functional magnetic resonance imaging, we investigated the correlates of the audiovisual integration of dynamic faces a

Integration of Spatial and Social Network Analysis in Disease Transmission Studies.

This study presents a case study of how social network and spatial analytical methods can be used simultaneously for disease transmission modeling. The paper first reviews strategies employed in previous studies and then offers the example of transmission of two bacterial diarrheal diseases in rural Bangladesh. The goal is to understand how diseases vary socially above and beyond the effects of the local neighborhood context. Patterns of cholera and shigellosis incidence are analyzed in space and within kinship-based social networks in Matlab, Bangladesh. Data include a spatially referenced lo

Social connectedness and digital literacy in later life: the mediating roles of perceived barriers and social integration.

BACKGROUND: Population aging and digital transformation are two major global trends; however, the potential pathways through which social connectedness may be associated with digital literacy in later life remain underexplored. This study examined the mediating roles of perceived barriers and social integration in the relationship between social connectedness and digital literacy among Chinese older adults. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted among 505 middle-aged and older educated Chinese adults aged 50-70 years. Digital literacy was assessed across five dimensions. Social conne…

Payment Structures That Support Social Care Integration With Clinical Care: Social Deprivation Indices and Novel Payment Models.

The U.S. lags behind other developed countries in the use of indices and novel reimbursement models to adjust for social determinants of health (SDH) in medicine. This may be due in part to the inadequate body of research regarding outcomes after implementation of healthcare payments designed to address SDH. This perspective article focuses on four models employed both internationally and domestically to outline the implementation, successes, limitations, and research needed to support national application of SDH models. A brief history of prior models is introduced as a primer to the current

Socially-integrated transdisciplinary HIV prevention.

Current ideas about HIV prevention include a mixture of primarily biomedical interventions, socio-mechanical interventions such as sterile syringe and condom distribution, and behavioral interventions. This article presents a framework for socially-integrated transdisciplinary HIV prevention that may improve current prevention efforts. It first describes one socially-integrated transdisciplinary intervention project, the Transmission Reduction Intervention Project. We focus on how social aspects of the intervention integrate its component parts across disciplines and processes at different lev

Toward an integrative understanding of social phobia.

Our objective was to examine the neurobiology of social phobia from the perspectives of basic sciences, genetics, immunology, neuroendocrinology, neurotransmission and neuroimaging and to provide an integrated understanding of social phobia in the framework of a hypothetical neural circuit. Family and twin studies provide evidence that social phobia is heritable with significant genetic influence, and molecular genetics offers possibilities in understanding the nature of the trait that is transmitted. The biologic distinctiveness of social phobia from anxiety disorders and physiological valida

Determinants of social health in later life: the roles of family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being.

INTRODUCTION: Population aging has intensified scholarly attention towards the social dimensions of well-being in later life. While previous research has largely emphasized physical health and economic security, social health-reflecting individuals' ability to maintain meaningful relationships and social participation-remains comparatively underexplored, particularly among older adults in rural communities. Addressing this gap, the present study investigates how family integration, social participation, and psychosocial well-being contribute to social health in later life. METHODS: We conduct

Predictors of affect across social contexts: An integration of existing diary datasets.

Daily life is characterized by periods of complete and public solitude, face-to-face interactions and digitally mediated interactions when alone or with others, all of which elicit varying degrees and different types of affect. This study aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of affect during these distinct everyday contexts. By combining data from 11 distinct datasets, we examined how time spent in complete solitude (not interacting and with no-one around), digitally mediated interactions when alone, public solitude (not interacting but with others present), interacting face-to-face

Beyond Fear Learning in Isolation: Integration of Social Dimensions into Aversive Learning.

Aversive learning paradigms in laboratory settings have led to valuable decades of research on the acquisition and expression of memories that produce fear and avoidance. However, the majority of these studies have focused on situations in which animals undergo aversive learning while they are in isolation. Although these studies have provided critical insights into the behavioral and neural processes guiding aversive learning, as well as translational insights into neuropsychiatric disorders, how social dimensions that are embedded in naturalistic aversive experiences influence these processe

Social integration: Implications for the association between childhood trauma and stress responsivity.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood trauma is linked to the dysregulation of physiological responses to stress, particularly lower cardiovascular reactivity (CVR) to acute stress. The mechanisms that explain this association, however, are not yet fully understood. METHOD: Using secondary data from the Midlife in the United States (MIDUS) Biomarker Project (N = 1,148; n = 652 females), we examine whether social integration can help explain the association between childhood trauma and lower CVR. Participants completed a standardized laboratory stress paradigm which involved completing executive functioning (S…

Moving Toward Understanding Autism: Visual-Motor Integration, Imitation, and Social Skill Development.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder with a behavioral phenotype characterized by impaired development of social-communicative skills and excessive repetitive and stereotyped behaviors. Despite high phenotypic heterogeneity in ASD, a meaningful subpopulation of children with ASD (∼90%) show significant general motor impairment. More focused studies on the nature of motor impairment in ASD reveal that children with ASD are particularly impaired on tasks such as ball catching and motor imitation that require efficient visual-motor integration (VMI). Motor computational

Integration of sensory and motor processing underlying social behaviour in túngara frogs.

Social decision making involves the perception and processing of social stimuli, the subsequent evaluation of that information in the context of the individual's internal and external milieus to produce a decision, and then culminates in behavioural output informed by that decision. We examined brain networks in an anuran communication system that relies on acoustic signals to guide simple, stereotyped motor output. We used egr-1 mRNA expression to measure neural activation in male túngara frogs, Physalaemus pustulosus, following exposure to conspecific and heterospecific calls that evoke comp
