Stigma and social symptoms in Parkinson's disease: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Parkinson's disease (PD) is increasing more rapidly than any other neurodegenerative disorder. Motor and non-motor symptoms, and deficits in cognition and communication, negatively impact people with PD's social functioning and can result in enacted and felt stigma. The aim of this scoping review is to explore the determinants and effects of stigma in PD. METHODS: This scoping review followed the Joanna Briggs Institute methodology for scoping reviews. Quantitative and qualitative studies from January 2000 to April 2026 focusing on stigma in PD were considered for

Mpox in the news: social representations, identity, stigma and coping.

In May 2022, when the COVID-19 pandemic began to recede from public view, another infectious disease surprised the world-mpox (formerly monkeypox). It appeared to disproportionately affect gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (GBMSM). Using qualitative thematic analysis and social representations theory, we analysed a corpus of 91 items from a variety of news outlets that included GBMSM community members' personal accounts of living through an mpox outbreak. The aim was to study the various ways in which members of a marginalised group created social representations of mpox and to

Framing stigma as an avoidable social harm that widens inequality.

This article discusses the social harms arising out of stigma experienced by people who use drugs (PWUD), and how stigmatisation compromises 'human flourishing' and constrains 'life choices'. Drawing on Wellcome Trust qualitative research using in-depth, semi-structured interview data (N = 24) with people who use heroin, crack cocaine, spice and amphetamine, this article firstly provides insight into how stigma is operationalised relationally between people via a lens of class talk and drug use predicated on normative ideas of 'valued personhood'. Secondly, it turns to how stigma is weaponised

Explaining the Link Between HIV Stigma and Treatment Outcomes: From Stigma Avoidance to Socially Motivated Nonadherence.

BACKGROUND: Stigma is an important factor in medication adherence, but the mechanisms linking stigma to adherence are not understood, despite having been examined across multiple populations using a variety of study designs. Guided by a stigma-coping framework, we tested a model in which enacted stigma predicts antiretroviral (ART) nonadherence through stigma avoidance strategies and socially motivated nonadherence. METHOD: All adults waiting to receive their ART prescriptions (N = 1979) during multiple days and times were recruited from two public clinics in Cape Town South Africa (2021-2024

Social stigma, genetic services, and South Africa: is testing taboo?

Genetic testing and counselling are invaluable tools for preventative and personalised care. Unfortunately, utilisation of these services in South Africa, and continental Africa more broadly, has been limited. South Africa, which suffers from a unique epidemiological state, offers these genetic services, but accessibility is limited, as is education around this topic. Furthermore, coupled with the previous limitations, there is a prevalent distrust of the healthcare system and the stakeholders involved therein. This is largely due to the sociopolitical history of the country, which has resulte

Stigma, Depression, and Social Support in Black Individuals Diagnosed with Schizophrenia.

While racial disparities in schizophrenia treatment and service utilization are well-documented, little is known about the mechanisms driving these disparities. This study sought to identify mechanisms by which stigma negatively affects outcomes for Black individuals diagnosed with schizophrenia. Cross-sectional data from a subsample of 152 Black adults enrolled in the Recovery After Initial Schizophrenia Episode-Early Treatment Program (RAISE-ETP) Study was analyzed using structural equation modeling. Depressive symptoms mediated the relationship between stigma and behavioral health outcomes,

Perceived stigma and social support in treatment for pharmaceutical opioid dependence.

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: The dramatic increase in pharmaceutical opioid (PO) use in high-income countries is a growing public health concern. Stigma and social support are important as they may influence treatment uptake and outcomes, yet few studies exist regarding perceived stigma and social support among people with PO dependence. The aims of the study are to: (i) compare characteristics of those with PO dependence from iatrogenic and non-iatrogenic causes; (ii) document perceived stigma and its correlates in people in treatment for PO dependence; and (iii) examine correlates of social suppor

Breaking the cycle of stigmatization: managing the stigma of incontinence in social interactions.

Incontinence is a highly stigmatizing condition. This article explores the dynamics of stigmatization in interpersonal interactions from the perspective of both individuals who are stigmatized and individuals who are not stigmatized. When people who are stigmatized and nonstigmatized interact with each other, both experience threats to self-esteem, but for different reasons. Individuals who are stigmatized may experience self-esteem decrements because they feel that their group is devalued in the eyes of others. Those who are nonstigmatized may fear that their actions will be perceived as bias

Devaluation and Revaluation as Dynamic Social Processes: The Case of Psychedelic Stigma.

Stigma is a form of social devaluation, eliciting shame, disgust and othering. Most theorisation of stigma has focused on devaluation and stigmatisation; this paper identifies and expands on the concept of 'revaluation', defined as the positive revision of previously derogated social objects as part of ongoing stigma trajectories. To do so, we draw on 'stigma mutation' theory, which highlights three dynamic dimensions of stigma change over time: the lineage or history of the stigma, its variation in diverse groups and contexts and its intensity or strength. We further draw on assemblage theori

At the edge? HIV stigma and centrality in a community's social network in Namibia.

Social network analysis was used to examine the relationship between HIV/AIDS stigmatization, perceived risk, and centrality in the community network (via participation in community groups). The findings from respondents in Keetmanshoop, Namibia (N = 375) showed an interaction between stigma and risk perceptions\hose who perceived higher HIV risk and stronger HIV stigma participated in fewer community groups and participated in groups with members who participated less widely across the network. In contrast, those who perceived higher HIV risk and weaker HIV stigma participated more, and were

Stigma in the time of influenza: social and institutional responses to pandemic emergencies.

This article examines the role of stigma in social and institutional responses to infectious disease emergencies, to better understand and minimize these dynamics in the event of a pandemic of virulent influenza. In addition to their impact on human suffering, fear and stigma can seriously delay detection and treatment efforts, cooperation with contact tracing and isolation measures, and the effective distribution of resources for the prevention and control of infectious diseases. These dynamics are illustrated by the Indian plague epidemic of 1994, which occurred in a region where H5N1 influe

Social relationships, stigma and adherence to antiretroviral therapy for HIV/AIDS.

Research on adherence to combination antiretroviral therapy has up to now focused largely upon problems of definition and measurement, and on the identification of barriers and supports. This paper examines the intersection between taking HAART and building a life with HIV/AIDS. Data consist of 214 qualitative interviews with 52 HIV-positive, active illegal drug users. A interpretive analysis drawing upon stigma and fear of disclosure as analytical constructs was applied to explain working tensions between efforts to develop social relationships on the one hand, and attempts to safeguard healt

Do stigma and level of social anxiety predict adolescents' help-seeking intentions for social anxiety disorder?

BACKGROUND: Many adolescents meeting diagnostic criteria for social anxiety disorder (SAD) do not seek help or access timely professional supports. The current study investigated two hypothesized barriers to adolescents' seeking help for SAD: stigma and SAD symptoms. METHOD: Three hundred fifteen adolescents (52% female; mean age = 14.85 years) read a vignette describing a hypothetical peer with symptoms of SAD and completed measures of their own help-seeking intentions, SAD symptoms, stigma awareness and agreement. RESULTS: The majority of adolescents reported that the vignette character ne
