Intravenous sodium lactate administration in respiratory alkalosis secondary to severe brain injuries.

In acute cerebrovascular accidents the uptake of lactate by the brain tissue is enhanced, possibly in an attempt to buffer the increased local lactic acidosis. In this paper the results obtained by the administration of the lactate in 78 cases of hyperventilatory syndromes secondary to acute brain injuries, and the biochemistry of the cerebrospinal fluid and blood, are reported.

Hypertonic sodium lactate versus lactated ringer's solution for intravenous fluid therapy in operations on the abdominal aorta.

Fifty-eight patients who were to undergo aortic reconstruction were prospectively randomized into two groups to compare the effects of perioperative fluid replacement with isotonic and hypertonic crystalloid solutions. Blood loss was replaced with packed red blood cells, and additional fluid was given as either Ringer's lactate solution (RL, 130 mEq sodium/L, 274 mOsm/L) or a hypertonic balanced salt solution (HSL, 250 mEq sodium/L, 514 mOsm/L). Fluid was administered to maintain the cardiac filling pressure within 3 torr of the preoperative level and the cardiac output (CO) at or above the pr

Prospective, randomized trial of hypertonic sodium lactate versus lactated Ringer's solution for burn shock resuscitation.

We prospectively randomized 51 adult burned patients on admission to study fluid, electrolyte, and physiologic parameters during burn resuscitation with the use of hypertonic saline (HSL, Na 250 mEq/L, 514 mOsm) or lactated Ringer's solution (LR, Na 130 mEq/L, 268 mOsm). Patients suffered at least 20% total body surface area burns (BSA); the mean BSA injury was 36.7% BSA, with a range of 20 to 74% BSA. All patients were admitted to our Burn Center within at least 12 hours of injury. Laboratory studies included frequent determinations of serum chemistries including osmolalities, and continuous

[Action of a sodium lactate perfusion on the hemodynamic effects of beta-blockaders].

In 15 dogs who had been given propranolol and 5 humans who had been given Pindolol, an infusion of sodium lactate produced: 1) an increased in blood lactate levels and pH; 2) an increase in the cardiac index; 3) a state in which an infusion of isoproterenol (inactive on its own) could act as it would have done had the betaadrenergic receptors not been blocked. A perfusion of lactic acid which was sufficient to cause the variations in pH and blood lactate levels that are seen with exercise had no action on the heart rate nor on the cardiac index of 10 dogs treated with propranolol and could not…

Effect of L-calcium lactate, zinc lactate, and ferric sodium EDTA on the physicochemical and functional properties of liquid whole egg.

The study aimed to evaluate the physicochemical and functional properties of liquid whole egg (LWE) with L-calcium lactate (L-Ca), zinc lactate (L-Zn), and sodium ferric EDTA (NaFeEDTA), and to compare with NaCl addition to determine the application potential of these mineral supplements. Results showed that salts addition significantly influenced the foaming, emulsifying, and gelling properties of LWE, which was possible through affecting the pH, particle size, surface hydrophobicity, apparent viscosity, and solubility. The addition of all the four salts reduced pH but increased the d4,3 diam

Effect of potassium lactate and a potassium lactate-sodium diacetate blend on Listeria monocytogenes growth in modified atmosphere packaged sliced ham.

Two commercially available organic acid salts, potassium lactate (PURASAL HiPure P) and a potassium lactate-sodium diacetate blend (PURASAL Opti. Form PD 4), were assessed as potential inhibitors of Listeria monocytogenes growth in modified atmosphere packaged (MAP) sliced ham in challenge studies. The influence of the initial inoculation level of L. monocytogenes (10(1) or 10(3) CFU g(-1)) and storage temperature (4 or 8 degrees C) was also examined. The addition of either organic acid salt to MAP sliced ham strongly inhibited the growth of L. monocytogenes during the normal shelf life of the

Panic response to sodium lactate infusion in patients with multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Many patients who are first seen with what has been called multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome (MCS) experience symptoms sugg … panic disorder and would therefore demonstrate similar responses to provocative challenges, such as sodium lactate infusion. METHODS: Patients referred to an allergy and clinical immunology service for evaluation of "chemical sensitivity" were investigated to rule out underlying medical conditions, including asthma, as a cause of their symptoms and were enrolle …

Clinical characteristics and response to sodium lactate of patients with infrequent panic attacks.

Nine patients with panic attacks too infrequent to meet DSM-III criteria for panic disorder were compared to 20 panic disorder patients with respect to clinical characteristics and response to sodium lactate infusion. The two groups showed similar clinical characteristics and response to lactate. The authors conclude that patients with infrequent panic attacks are clinically and biologically similar to those with panic disorder and discuss implications for the diagnosis of panic states.

Diagnostic Utility of Sodium Lactate Infusion and CO2-35% Inhalation for Panic Disorder.

Laboratory measures have played an integral role in diagnosing pathology; however, compared to traditional medicine, psychiatric medicine has lagged behind in using such measures. A growing body of literature has begun to examine the viability and development of different laboratory measures in order to diagnose psychopathologies. The present review examines the current state of development of both sodium lactate infusion and CO2-35% inhalation as potential ancillary measures to diagnose panic disorder (PD). A previously established 3-step approach to identifying laboratory-based diagnostic te…

Effects of sodium lactate on ventilation and acid-base balance in healthy humans.

Sodium lactate inhibits ventilation when infused in healthy human subjects. This effect has been attributed to lactate-induced metabolic alkalosis. In order to further delineate the mechanisms responsible for this depression of ventilation, healthy humans were infused with sodium lactate with or without acetazolamide. Sodium lactate increased blood pH from 7.37 +/- 0.02 to 7.47 +/- 0.01 and induced a sustained urinary excretion of bicarbonate. PO2 of arterialized blood decreased by 10.3 +/- 2.1 mmHg, indicating an inhibition of ventilation. Acetazolamide decreased lactate-induced alkalinisatio…

Sodium lactate reversal of electrophysiological effects of imipramine in guinea-pig ventricular myocardium.

Overdose cardiac effects of imipramine are due to fast Na channel blockade and are clinically reversed by administration of sodium lactate which induces alkalosis (about pH 7.50) and hypernatremia (about 8 mM). The mechanisms of this beneficial effect of Na lactate were explored in vitro on guinea-pig ventricular myocardium using the microelectrode technique. The time-course effects of the clinically relevant concentration of 10 microM imipramine on action potential characteristics were examined at pH 7.20 and pH 7.50. To test whether alkalinisation per se is important or whether an increase i…

Effects of Sodium Lactate Infusion in Two Girls with Glucose Transporter 1 Deficiency Syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Glucose is an important fuel for the brain. In glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome (GLUT1DS), the transport of glucose across the blood-brain barrier is limited. Most individuals with GLUT1DS present with developmental problems, epilepsy, and (paroxysmal) movement disorders, and respond favorably to the ketogenic diet. Similar to ketones, lactate is an alternative energy source for the brain. The aim of this study is to investigate whether intravenous infusion of sodium lactate in children with GLUT1DS has beneficial effects on their epilepsy. METHODS: We performed a proof o…

Distinct panicogenic activity of sodium lactate and cholecystokinin tetrapeptide in patients with panic disorder.

BACKGROUND: The validity of experimentally induced panic attacks as a model to study the pathophysiology of panic disorder has been questioned. Unspecific, unpleasant and aversive effects as well as specific patterns of psychovegetative symptoms pointing to different subtypes of panic disorder patients have been observed. These findings raise the question of challenge paradigms as a valuable tool to identify different vulnerabilities in patients with panic disorder. METHODS: We compared the two most widely studied panicogenic drugs sodium lactate and cholecystokinine tetrapeptide (CCK-4) with…
